They do not simply fill missing bones by eye. Paleontologists reconstruct an extinct animal through a staged process of evidence and inference: they document the fossil’s geological setting, prepare and conserve it, identify each fragment by comparing anatomy, rebuild the skeleton where proportions are constrained, test functional ideas with traces and digital models, and label what is preserved separately from what is inferred or artistically supplied.
The result is not one uniform level of certainty. A joint surface may locate a bone quite precisely, while skin color, behavior, or even the exact outline of a muscle may remain uncertain. A scientifically responsible reconstruction makes those different confidence levels visible.

What “reconstruction” means in paleontology
A reconstruction can refer to several different products: a cataloged specimen, a mounted skeleton, a computer model, or a life illustration showing muscles, skin, and behavior. Each relies on the same evidence but answers a different question.

- Specimen reconstruction: determining which bones are present, which animal they came from, and how they were positioned.
- Skeletal reconstruction: estimating the arrangement and proportions of missing bones using joints, repeated elements, and related animals.
- Functional reconstruction: testing how the animal may have fed, walked, breathed, or used its limbs.
- Life reconstruction: adding muscles, skin, feathers, color, posture, and behavior. These additions usually contain more inference than the bones do.
Scientists therefore ask a narrower question than “What did it look like?” at each stage: What is directly preserved? What follows from comparison? What is a model that could be tested? What is an informed but unverified artistic choice?

1. Read the site before reading the bones
The position of a fossil in the ground is evidence. Taphonomy—the study of what happens between death and fossilization—helps determine whether bones were left together, transported, damaged, or mixed with remains from other animals.
Transport and scattering
Water currents, floods, scavengers, trampling, and sediment movement can disarticulate a carcass. At Dinosaur National Monument, the National Park Service describes a bonebed in which many bones were carried by a river to a bend or sandbar. Isolated teeth and tooth-marked bones occur there as well. That setting warns researchers not to treat every nearby element as part of one individual.
What field records establish
Excavators record the layer, orientation, depth, surrounding sediment, and relationship to other specimens. Grain size, bedding, and signs of abrasion can indicate how far a bone traveled. A cluster of matching bones in undisturbed sediment provides a stronger case for association than a collection of fragments gathered from a transported deposit.

A river may preferentially carry dense, durable bones while destroying or leaving behind lighter elements. A collection dominated by teeth or jaws may reflect preservation and transport rather than the animal’s anatomy.
2. Prepare and conserve the fossil without destroying evidence
Most fossils are embedded in rock called matrix. Preparation removes that matrix with tools and techniques chosen for the material’s hardness, the fossil’s fragility, and the scientific question. The goal is not merely to make a specimen look clean; it is to expose anatomical surfaces while preserving information.
Documentation comes first
Before and during preparation, technicians photograph, map, and label the specimen. Broken surfaces, compression, mineral veins, and areas that remain hidden are recorded. A fragment that appears to be an isolated bone may later prove to join another piece, so aggressive trimming can erase useful evidence.
Stabilization and repair
Fossil material can be brittle, cracked, or chemically altered. Conservators stabilize it with reversible or documented treatments and retain fragments that might be needed for future analysis. Repairs should be distinguishable from original fossil, especially in a display mount or publication.

3. Identify each fragment by anatomy and comparison
Identification begins with observable form. Paleontologists examine bone shape, thickness, curvature, openings, ridges, and joint surfaces, then compare those features with more complete specimens and related organisms. The Australian Museum describes comparison with complete examples as an initial way to decide whether remains match a known species.
Joint surfaces are especially informative
A ball-and-socket, hinge, or flat articulation constrains how a bone could meet its neighbor. The size and orientation of a joint can indicate whether a fragment belongs to a limb, vertebra, jaw, or another region. Matching facets may show that two broken pieces were once connected.
Relationships matter as much as names
Researchers compare diagnostic traits across specimens to determine whether a fragment represents a known species, a close relative, or something new. A single unusual feature is rarely enough; the pattern of traits and their distribution across the skeleton are considered together.

A larger bone may belong to a larger species, an older individual, or a differently proportioned body region. Histology, repeated bones, and comparisons with specimens of different ages can help distinguish those possibilities, but growth rates are generally less certain than basic size or movement.
4. Rebuild the skeleton with constrained proportions
Once elements are identified, scientists test how they fit into a body. Comparative anatomy supplies missing proportions, but it does not authorize unlimited copying from a modern animal or a complete fossil of another species.
Use repeated elements and bilateral symmetry
Animals commonly have left and right versions of many bones, and a series of vertebrae or limb segments can reveal missing intermediate parts. A complete element can provide a scale reference for a broken counterpart, while repeated dimensions help estimate the length of an absent segment.
Read attachment marks
Roughened patches, ridges, pits, and flanges can mark where muscles, tendons, cartilage, or ligaments attached. These features constrain the direction and relative size of soft tissues, although they do not provide a complete muscle map by themselves.

A mounted skeleton may combine original bones from one or more individuals with casts, 3-D prints, sculpted fills, or estimated elements. The Smithsonian has noted that older mounts sometimes mixed bones from different individuals; mismatched sizes could distort the apparent proportions. Labels and mount records should state which pieces are original and which are replacements.

5. Infer diet, movement, and behavior from independent evidence
Skeletons provide a framework, but many biological questions require evidence outside the bones.
Diet
Tooth shape can distinguish cutting, crushing, piercing, or grinding functions. Microscopic wear on tooth surfaces adds clues about the hardness and texture of foods. These signals are indirect: wear can reflect multiple foods or postmortem damage, so it is interpreted alongside jaw mechanics and the animal’s geological setting.
Locomotion
Trackways record the interaction between a foot and the ground. Track spacing, stride length, and toe impressions can constrain gait, while limb joints and muscle attachments indicate which postures were mechanically possible. A track is evidence of movement at one moment, not a complete behavioral biography.
Reproduction and growth
Eggs, nests, embryos, and repeated growth stages can reveal reproductive behavior and development. Histological sections may show growth patterns, but the timing and speed of growth are usually harder to establish than adult skeletal dimensions.
Preserved soft tissues and gut contents
Skin impressions, feathers, and gut contents can provide unusually direct information about external anatomy or a final meal. Their absence should not be interpreted as evidence that a feature was absent; soft tissue is much less likely to fossilize than bone.
6. Use CT scans and digital models to test hypotheses
Computed tomography can reveal internal cavities, hidden fractures, canals, and the shape of a bone beneath a surface that cannot safely be removed. Researchers can turn scan data into digital models, fit fragments virtually, and estimate how joints moved.
Digital models are useful for testing forces and movement without repeatedly handling a fragile fossil. A model can ask whether a proposed joint angle permits a particular range of motion or whether a reconstructed structure would withstand an estimated load. The output is a test of the assumptions built into the model, not a direct recording of the extinct animal’s life.
Model results need assumptions stated
Results depend on choices about body mass, muscle placement, material strength, posture, and speed. Changing those inputs can change the result. A strong study reports the assumptions and the range of outcomes rather than presenting one animated pose as uniquely proven.

What fragmentary fossils can still tell us
An incomplete specimen can answer an evolutionary question even when it cannot support a full-body illustration. Researchers may need only a jaw, tooth pattern, vertebra, or other diagnostic region to compare relationships.
A Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County report dated January 31, 2022 described a study using more than 6,500 fossil squamate specimens—lizards, snakes, and extinct relatives. In that tested group, incomplete skeletal representations did not mislead the study’s interpretations of evolutionary relationships. The same report said almost two-thirds of the surveyed lizard fossil specimens were jaws and palate, illustrating how uneven anatomical representation can be in a collection.
Those findings apply to the questions and taxa examined, not to every isolated fossil. A fragment’s usefulness depends on which anatomical traits are preserved and whether those traits distinguish among the competing hypotheses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.“This is exciting, because results like ours increase the scientific value of incomplete specimens housed in museum collections, and that allows us to include more of Earth’s extinct biodiversity as we continue to piece together the past,” said Hank Woolley, graduate student-in-residence at the NHM Dinosaur Institute.
How scientists communicate confidence
The Australian Museum distinguishes traits that are relatively easier to estimate—such as size and some aspects of movement—from growth rates and behavior, which are more speculative. It also describes color and pattern reconstructions as educated guesswork when direct evidence is unavailable.
A practical evidence scale
- Directly preserved: an original bone, tooth, track, egg, skin impression, feather, or other fossil feature is present.
- Strongly constrained inference: joint geometry, matching breaks, symmetry, or repeated anatomy leaves few plausible alternatives.
- Comparative inference: a feature is proposed because close relatives or living analogues share it, though the extinct animal may have differed.
- Model-dependent hypothesis: a digital or mechanical analysis supports a range of possible functions under stated assumptions.
- Artistic completion: a color, pattern, soft-tissue contour, pose, or behavior is supplied where evidence cannot choose among alternatives.
This scale is more informative than assigning one accuracy percentage to an entire reconstruction. One mount can contain highly secure bone placement and highly speculative skin or color.
How to read a museum mount or paleoart illustration
Ask what you are actually looking at before treating it as a photograph of the past.
- Check the label for specimen numbers, casts, replicas, or reconstructed elements.
- Look for asymmetry or size changes that may indicate bones from different individuals.
- Separate the preserved skeleton from sculpted muscles, skin, feathers, and paint.
- Ask which features are supported by tracks, tooth wear, eggs, skin impressions, or other independent evidence.
- Read captions for uncertainty language such as “possible,” “estimated,” or “based on related species.”
An illustration can be scientifically valuable while still containing artistic choices. Its purpose is to show a defensible possibility, not to claim that every visible detail was fossilized.

Common failure modes—and how researchers correct them
Assuming nearby bones belonged to one animal
Problem: transport or scavenging may have mixed individuals.
Correction: use taphonomic evidence, duplication of left or right elements, sediment position, size matching, and independent specimen records before assembling a skeleton.
Treating a cast as original fossil
Problem: replacement parts can be mistaken for preserved anatomy.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Correction: maintain mount documentation and identify casts, prints, and sculpted fills in labels and publications.
Copying a living animal too literally
Problem: a modern relative may share a body plan but not the extinct animal’s muscles, skin, behavior, or color.
Correction: use living relatives as comparative evidence, then test each proposed feature against the fossil anatomy and its evolutionary relationships.
Turning one model output into a fact
Problem: biomechanics depends on assumptions about mass, posture, tissue properties, and muscle placement.
Correction: report assumptions, test alternatives, and describe a range of plausible outcomes.
Confusing absence of evidence with evidence of absence
Problem: soft tissues and fragile bones often fail to fossilize.
Correction: state that a feature is unknown unless preservation, anatomy, or comparative evidence supports a stronger conclusion.
The defensible reconstruction in one sentence
A defensible reconstruction is a chain of documented observations, comparisons, and testable inferences in which every visible part—original fossil, cast, modeled structure, or artistic completion—has an identifiable evidential status. Fragmentary fossils can reveal relationships, anatomy, diet, and movement, but the farther a reconstruction moves from preserved material toward behavior and appearance, the more explicitly uncertainty must be shown.
