How Paleontologists Excavate and Date Large Dinosaur Fossils

Large dinosaur fossils are recovered through a controlled chain rather than simple digging: paleontologists identify promising sedimentary rocks, expose and map the specimen, stabilize it, encase it in a protective field jacket, transport the rock block, and finish the excavation in a laboratory. Scientists then establish an age mainly from the fossil’s geological context—especially dated volcanic ash layers—not by routinely radiometrically dating the dinosaur bone itself.

The result is both a specimen and a record of where every part lay. Losing that context can make a spectacular bone far less useful for science.

The excavation and dating process at a glance

  1. Prospecting: Geologic maps and knowledge of fossil-bearing formations direct crews toward exposed rocks of the right age and depositional setting.
  2. Exposure and mapping: Overlying rock is removed carefully while the specimen’s position, orientation, number and relationships are documented.
  3. Stabilization and jacketing: Cracks are consolidated, and the fossil remains in a block of surrounding matrix wrapped in plaster and burlap.
  4. Transport: The hardened jacket is moved as a protected unit, often with mechanical lifting equipment because a jacket can weigh more than a ton.
  5. Laboratory preparation: Preparators remove matrix, repair and examine the bones, and determine what animal and anatomy are actually present.
  6. Geochronology: Radiometric dates from suitable rocks—such as volcanic ash in nearby strata—are combined with stratigraphic relationships to estimate the age of the fossil-bearing layer.

How do paleontologists find dinosaur fossils?

Start with the rocks, not a random landscape

Most field projects begin with geologic maps and formation studies. Teams look for exposed sedimentary strata from the Mesozoic, the interval when non-avian dinosaurs lived, and for environments in which carcasses could have been buried and preserved. Floodplains, river channels and other settings that repeatedly received sediment can be productive because rapid burial shields remains from scavengers, weathering and physical disturbance.

This geological targeting narrows the search but does not guarantee a discovery. Erosion may expose only a small part of a skeleton, vegetation or soil can hide an outcrop, and a promising formation may contain no visible bone at a particular location. Prospecting therefore combines maps, knowledge of local geology and systematic walking with an element of chance.

The Morrison Formation example

Earl Douglass used this approach when he selected northeastern Utah for the Carnegie Museum’s work. The Morrison Formation was already known to be exposed there and recognized as fossil-rich. That decision did not reveal a skeleton instantly; it put repeated searching in rocks with a reasonable preservation history. Similar reasoning guides modern crews, although the precise tools, permits and survey methods vary by site.

How is a large fossil exposed and documented?

Remove rock slowly as bone appears

Once a fragment or a promising surface is identified, crews remove overlying rock with hand tools such as awls, rock hammers and chisels. The goal is controlled exposure, not clearing the entire skeleton as quickly as possible. Matrix can be harder or softer than the fossil, and a tool strike that is harmless to sandstone may split a thin bone.

As cracks become visible, conservators or trained field workers may apply an appropriate consolidant, commonly described as glue in field accounts, to hold fragile material together. Stabilization is done while the bone is still supported by surrounding rock; trying to repair a completely free, broken element in the field is more difficult.

Preserve the position as scientific evidence

Before removal, the crew records the locality, field or specimen number, orientation and position relative to other bones and sedimentary features. Photographs, measured notes and maps capture information that will disappear when the block is lifted. At Carnegie Quarry, workers painted grid lines across exposed sections and documented the exact location of fossils. The field number must follow the specimen and its jacket; the American Museum of Natural History’s field-preparation guidance states: “Every specimen and jacket should be accompanied by its field number.”

These records can show whether bones were articulated, scattered by water, stacked during burial or associated with another animal. A bone without a proven location may still be identifiable, but it cannot answer as many questions about behavior, transport or the ancient environment.

How do they excavate a dinosaur bone without breaking it?

Leave a supporting pedestal

For a large bone or skeleton, crews normally do not attempt to free every surface in the field. They trench around the fossil, leaving a low pedestal of matrix beneath it. This surrounding rock supports the bone and becomes part of the protective package.

Build the field jacket in stages

A separating layer is placed over the exposed fossil so the hardened jacket can later be removed without bonding directly to the specimen. Crews then wrap plaster bandages, or plaster and burlap, over the top and sides of the matrix block. Plaster bandage rolls are professional field supplies, not a recommendation for an untrained person to excavate or collect fossils.

After the upper and side surfaces have cured, workers undercut the pedestal. The block is turned carefully, padded, and jacketed on the underside. The completed shell functions like a rigid container: the fossil remains supported by matrix while the jacket absorbs handling stresses. Large jackets containing substantial portions of a dinosaur skeleton can weigh well over a ton, so lifting plans, padding and adequate transport equipment are essential.

Why field jacketing is safer than complete exposure

Trying to expose every grain around a large bone outdoors increases the time it is exposed to weather and vibration and removes the support that kept it intact. A jacket also protects small fragments that might be overlooked in the field. Its trade-off is weight: crews move more rock than fossil, and preparators must later remove that matrix under controlled conditions.

What happens when the fossil leaves the field?

The jacket is labeled, documented and transported to a museum or preparation facility. Handling continues to follow the field record so that a block is not separated from its locality information or mixed with another specimen. The field jacket is not the finished display object; it is temporary protection that allows the specimen to travel before detailed work begins.

What happens after a dinosaur fossil is dug up?

Open the jacket and choose tools for the matrix

In the laboratory, preparators open the jacket and remove matrix according to the hardness of the rock and the fragility of the fossil. Delicate work may use dental tools and carbide-steel needles. Small grinding wheels, air scribes and compressed-air sandblasters can be suitable for some harder matrices, but no single tool is appropriate for every specimen. The preparator continually exposes, cleans and supports the bone rather than treating it as an object that can simply be pried out.

Use imaging when it answers a real question

Computed tomography can document material inside a closed jacket before it is opened and can reveal bones or internal relationships that were not visible during excavation. CT is an option, not an automatic step for every specimen. Its value depends on the rock’s density, the fossil’s condition and the research question.

Let laboratory preparation establish the identification

Field identification is often provisional. A fragment that appears to belong to one dinosaur may prove to be another bone, a different animal or an isolated piece after the matrix is removed. Roger Benson, a Macaulay Curator in the American Museum of Natural History’s Division of Paleontology, described the distinction this way: “So even when we’re excavating, we’re more or less only guessing which dinosaurs we’re finding. Really, the actual discovery and confirmation of what we found goes on in the lab.” Preparation can expose diagnostic joints, tooth surfaces, muscle scars and other features that make a confident identification possible.

How do scientists know how old a dinosaur fossil is?

Age usually comes from geological context

Dinosaur-bearing sedimentary rocks commonly cannot be dated directly with a routine radiometric test on ordinary bone. Instead, scientists determine the age of the layer by combining stratigraphy—the fossil’s position among rock layers—with rocks that can be dated and with regional geological correlations. The resulting age applies to the fossil-bearing sequence within stated uncertainties; it is not automatically an exact birthday for an individual animal.

Volcanic ash provides dateable crystals

Dinosaur National Monument’s Carnegie Quarry illustrates the method. The quarry lies in sandstone of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation. Nearby bentonite mudstones contain volcanic ash, and crystals preserved in that ash can be radiometrically dated. Those dates constrain the age of the surrounding sequence that contains the quarry fossils. The National Park Service gives the Morrison Formation an approximate range of 163.5 to 145 million years ago. That interval describes the formation broadly, not every bone at every Morrison locality.

The distinction matters: a radiometric result from ash-associated crystals is evidence about when the ash was deposited and how the surrounding layers relate to one another. It should not be rewritten as “the Apatosaurus bone was radiometrically dated” unless a specific, validated direct-dating method and result actually exist.

Read a fossil age with its qualifiers

  • Formation age: A broad interval for a named rock unit, such as the Morrison Formation.
  • Layer or member age: A narrower estimate tied to the fossil-bearing bed and its position in the sequence.
  • Associated ash age: A radiometric date from volcanic material that brackets or correlates the sedimentary layer.
  • Specimen age: An interpretation that inherits the limits of the geological evidence; it should not be presented with more precision than the dated rocks support.

What the Carnegie Quarry tells us about real excavations

The Carnegie Quarry provides a documented historical example rather than a typical excavation benchmark. In 1909, Earl Douglass found eight connected Apatosaurus tail vertebrae in exact position. The discovery demonstrated why preserving anatomical relationships matters: the bones were evidence of a connected tail, not merely eight unrelated pieces.

Carnegie Museum excavations continued from 1909 through 1922. The National Park Service reports that later Smithsonian and University of Utah work also took place and that most visible fossils had been extracted by 1924. Its account credits the Carnegie effort with removing more than 300 tons of fossils, including ten mostly complete skeletons and fourteen skulls. Those figures describe the history of that quarry and team; they are not expectations for an ordinary field season.

Douglass recalled the moment in these words: “At last, in the top of the ledge where the softer overlying beds form a divide, a kind of saddle, I saw eight of the tail bones of [an Apatosaurus] in exact position. It was a beautiful sight.” The quotation captures the reward of prospecting, but the scientific value depended on the mapping and careful removal that followed.

Field excavation and laboratory preparation are different jobs

Stage Main objective What can be learned Primary limitation
Field exposure Reveal enough bone to identify, stabilize and plan removal Position, orientation, association and sedimentary setting Weather, time, access and fragile surfaces limit how much can be exposed
Field jacketing Protect the fossil and matrix for transport Preserves the block and its context as a physical unit Adds substantial weight and requires careful lifting
Laboratory preparation Remove matrix and conserve the specimen Diagnostic anatomy, hidden fragments and repairable detail Can take extensive time and requires specialized tools and judgment
Geological dating Estimate when the fossil-bearing rocks formed Formation, member or bed age constrained by stratigraphy and dated materials Usually provides a contextual interval, not a direct exact date for the bone

Common mistakes and how professionals avoid them

Breaking the specimen while chasing a clean surface

Removing all matrix before support is ready can cause fractures. Crews leave a pedestal, consolidate cracks and jacket the block while the fossil is still supported.

Losing the context

A specimen number, orientation mark or photograph that is not carried into the records can sever the connection between a bone and its quarry position. Labels, notes and jacket markings are treated as part of the specimen’s scientific documentation.

Overstating a field identification

Surface appearance is not a final diagnosis. Laboratory preparation, comparison with reference material and sometimes CT imaging can change what the field crew thought it had found.

Confusing a formation date with an individual fossil’s date

Reporting the full age range of a formation as though it were the exact age of one skeleton hides the uncertainty. A responsible account names the dated material, the rock unit and the limits of the inference.

Why only some dinosaurs become fossils

The fossil record is selective. Most dinosaurs that lived left no recoverable skeleton, and even preserved animals are often fragmented or dispersed. Rapid burial improves the odds of preservation by shielding remains from erosion, scavenging and chemical alteration. Geological prospecting, careful documentation and laboratory preparation cannot restore information that was never preserved, but they can protect the small amount that survived and make it scientifically useful.
