Orb-weaver spiders build a web in layers. They first secure anchor and frame threads, add radial lines that meet at a hub, lay a temporary spiral as a construction guide, and then replace it with a closer capture spiral. When a flying insect strikes, the web spreads and absorbs part of the impact; adhesive or entangling capture threads hold the insect while vibrations tell the spider where the disturbance occurred and what may have caused it.
The design is a mechanical and sensory system rather than a simple net. Different silks carry different loads, spacing changes the kinds of insects likely to be retained, and some webs include silk decorations whose purpose is still debated.

What an orb web is designed to do
An orb web is a suspended structure organized around a hub. Anchor threads connect it to the surrounding supports, a perimeter frame defines its outer boundary, and radial threads run inward from that frame to the hub. A spiral thread crosses the radii. The outer support network gives the web shape and transfers forces, while the spiral is specialized for contacting and retaining prey.

Those parts are not interchangeable. Dragline silk used for anchors, the frame, and radii is comparatively stiff. Capture silk is more extensible, allowing it to deform when struck. In many orb webs, the capture spiral is viscid silk coated with adhesive glue droplets. Cribellate orb webs use dry adhesive capture threads instead, so “orb web” does not mean that every species uses identical silk chemistry or exactly the same architecture.

| Web component | Main material or feature | Primary job |
|---|---|---|
| Anchors and frame | Comparatively stiff dragline silk | Suspend and outline the web |
| Radial threads | Dragline silk extending from frame to hub | Carry loads and distribute impact through the web |
| Temporary spiral | Widely spaced guide threads | Provide a route for placing the final spiral |
| Capture spiral | Extensible viscid silk with glue droplets, or dry cribellate adhesive thread | Adhere to or entangle insects and help retain them |
This division of labor explains why a web can be light yet effective. The supporting lines maintain geometry, while the capture spiral supplies the contact properties needed when an insect collides with the structure.
How an orb-weaver constructs the web
1. Securing anchor threads
Construction begins with threads that connect the future web to its surroundings. These anchors bear the load of the frame and the radii. Their placement determines where the web can be suspended and how much area the spider can fill. The anchor network is therefore part of the web’s engineering, not merely a convenient place to attach silk.
2. Laying the perimeter frame
The spider links the anchors with a perimeter frame. This boundary gives the web a stable outline and provides attachment points for the radial threads. A well-defined frame also allows forces from an impact to travel into the support network instead of remaining concentrated at a single contact point.

Next, the spider adds radial threads that extend from the frame toward a central hub. A 2021 analysis of three-dimensional construction describes the sequence directly: “Orb-weaver spiders build the hub with radial threads and then place the spiral threads using spiral scaffolding as a guide.” The radii divide the interior into sectors and form the main paths through which mechanical disturbances can travel.

4. Adding a temporary spiral scaffold
The first spiral is not the final trapping surface. It is widely spaced and functions as a scaffold or guide laid across the radii. Because the spider can use this temporary spiral to position itself and maintain regular spacing, it can place the later capture thread in a controlled path rather than trying to judge every turn from an unsupported position.
5. Replacing the guide with the capture spiral
After the scaffold establishes the route, the spider places the final spiral. This spiral is closer spaced than the temporary guide and carries the web’s principal adhesive or entangling function. The capture thread crosses the radii repeatedly, creating the familiar round pattern seen from a distance. The completed structure combines a stiff load-bearing skeleton with a more extensible prey-contact layer.
6. Checking and repairing the structure
Web construction does not end when the last spiral turn is in place. Vibrations moving through silk provide information about the condition of the structure. The 2021 study discusses how silk properties and web architecture can help localize damage and support rapid repair. A spider can therefore use the same network that detects prey to identify defects in its own web.
Why different silks are used in one web
Silk is a family of materials with different mechanical roles. The support system must stay organized under tension and transmit forces, so dragline silk in anchors, frames, and radii is relatively stiff. The capture spiral must yield when an insect hits it, increasing the time over which the insect’s motion is stopped. Its greater extensibility helps the web absorb deformation without making every support thread equally compliant.

Adhesion also varies. Viscid capture silk carries glue droplets that can stick to an insect’s body. Cribellate orb webs use dry adhesive capture threads, which retain prey without the same liquid coating. These alternatives show why observations from one orb-weaver species should not automatically be generalized to all orb-weavers.
What happens when an insect hits the web
- Impact spreads through the web. A flying insect transfers kinetic energy to the threads at contact. The linked silk deforms, and the web absorbs part of that energy instead of behaving like a rigid barrier.
- Radial threads distribute the load. Experiments reported by the Royal Society found that radial threads make a major contribution to absorbing prey kinetic energy. Their arrangement helps spread the disturbance across the supporting structure.
- The capture spiral prevents immediate escape. Adhesive glue droplets on viscid silk can stick to the insect, while dry cribellate threads provide a different form of adhesion. The spiral can also entangle the insect, giving the spider time to respond.
- Vibrations reveal the event. The collision sends vibrations along the web. Orb-weavers can use vibration information to locate and identify possible prey, mates, predators, and defects in the web, according to the 2021 study.
- The spider locates and subdues the insect. By reading the disturbance, the spider can determine where attention is needed and distinguish a likely prey event from other vibrations. It then moves to the trapped insect and subdues it. The web’s role is to retain the insect long enough for that response; it is not the entire capture process by itself.
This sequence separates interception from retention. The radii and overall architecture are especially important for handling impact, while the capture spiral supplies adhesion and entanglement. A web can therefore fail in different ways: it may miss an insect, deform without holding it, or hold it long enough for the spider to reach it.
How web size and spacing affect capture
Web design involves trade-offs rather than one ideal pattern. A larger web presents more intercepting area, but it also requires more silk and a larger supporting space. Mesh spacing changes how much open area an insect encounters and how the capture spiral is distributed.
A 2007 experiment measured these factors instead of treating them as universal rules. In that study, capture probability increased with web size, while mesh width did not affect capture probability under the tested conditions. The same experiment found that spiders on narrow-meshed webs were almost three times more likely to capture energetically profitable large insects. That “almost three times” result belongs to the particular species, prey categories, and experimental design; it should not be presented as a fixed multiplier for every orb-weaver or every insect.

| Design factor | Finding from the 2007 experiment | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Web size | Capture probability increased as web size increased | A larger intercepting area improved capture under the study conditions |
| Mesh width | Did not affect capture probability in that experiment | The result was specific to the tested setup, not a universal rule |
| Narrow-meshed webs and large profitable insects | Almost three times as likely to capture them | A study-specific advantage for that prey category and experimental context |
The findings also illustrate why web architecture cannot be judged by appearance alone. Two webs may look similar but differ in silk type, spacing, size, or the kinds of prey available around them. Their performance depends on the interaction among those variables.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the spider reads vibrations
Silk is both structure and information channel. When a thread moves, the disturbance can travel through connected lines to the spider’s position. The 2021 work describes vibration information as useful for locating and identifying potential mates, prey, predators, and web defects. This means the spider is not simply waiting for any movement; the pattern and location of vibration provide clues about its source.
Architecture affects that signal. Radial threads create organized routes from the perimeter to the hub, while the capture spiral supplies many possible contact points. The spider can compare where and how strongly the network moves, then direct its response toward the relevant sector. The same physical properties that help distribute impact also shape the sensory information available to the spider.

Changes in vibration pathways can indicate a broken or weakened section. Because the silk network can help localize the problem, repair can be targeted rather than requiring the spider to rebuild every portion of the web.

What silk decorations, or stabilimenta, mean
Some orb webs contain conspicuous silk decorations called stabilimenta. Their appearance has prompted several hypotheses: they might strengthen the web, hide the spider, reduce damage, affect foraging, or provide shade. A 2000 review found that the function remained disputed. Among the explanations examined, foraging had the most supporting evidence, while several alternatives had been tested less extensively.
That uncertainty is important. A decoration should not automatically be labeled a “stability” device simply because of its name, nor should one proposed function be treated as applicable to every species. The feature may vary among orb-weavers, and its effect can depend on web position, habitat, predators, and available prey. The evidence supports describing stabilimenta as multifunctional candidates with no single confirmed explanation across all orb webs.
How to read an orb web in the field
You can identify the web’s functional layers without touching it. Start at the outside and work inward:

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Find the anchors and frame: look for the threads that suspend the web and define its perimeter.
- Trace the radii: follow straight lines converging on the hub. These are the principal load-bearing routes.
- Distinguish the spirals: a widely spaced construction scaffold may be difficult to see after completion; the closer final spiral is the likely capture surface.
- Look for silk type clues: visible glue droplets suggest viscid capture silk, while a dry-looking capture thread may indicate a cribellate design.
- Note decorations separately: a stabilimentum is an added silk pattern, not proof that the entire web has a different basic layout.
Viewing the web this way turns a circular pattern into a sequence of jobs: suspension, force distribution, prey contact, and information transfer. It also prevents a common mistake—assuming that every thread has the same material properties or purpose.
The main idea: a web is a coordinated capture system
Orb-weaver construction succeeds because each stage prepares the next one. Anchors and the frame create a stable boundary. Radials establish the hub-centered skeleton and absorb much of an impact. A temporary spiral gives the spider a guide for laying the final capture spiral. The completed web then combines energy absorption, adhesion or entanglement, and vibration sensing.
Prey capture is consequently a chain of events rather than a single trick. The web intercepts an insect, slows and retains it, and transmits a signal that helps the spider identify and locate the disturbance. Web size, spacing, silk type, and species-specific architecture alter how well those steps work. Some decorative features remain scientifically unresolved, but the core design principle is clear: orb-weaver spiders build a lightweight structure whose materials and geometry are tuned simultaneously for mechanics and information.
