Orangutans rescued from forest fires do not go straight back into the jungle. A specialist team first gets them out of smoke, flames or isolated habitat, then provides veterinary stabilization, quarantine and a gradual program to rebuild the skills needed for independent life. Only animals that are medically fit, behaviorally prepared and matched with a safe, connected forest are released; others remain in carefully managed sanctuary habitat.
Why fire changes an orangutan’s situation
Wildfire harms orangutans even when flames never touch them. Smoke irritates the respiratory system, heat can burn hands and feet used for climbing, and fire removes the leaves, fruit, bark and insects that make up their food supply. Burning vegetation can also break the forest corridors orangutans use to move between feeding and nesting areas.

When corridors disappear, an animal may be trapped in a small unburned patch, forced into a plantation or exposed while searching for food. The resulting dehydration and malnutrition can be severe. An Associated Press report published on 13 October 2026 described eight orangutans rescued from fire-ravaged areas of Ketapang and North Kayong in Indonesian Borneo. The animals had no open wounds or broken bones, yet were weak from inadequate food and water. Staff examined and observed them at a YIARI rehabilitation center before moving them to Batu Nyambu protected forest.
Batu Nyambu was selected because it offered the conditions a release site must provide: intact forest, natural food, water, suitable trees for sleeping nests and links to neighboring forest. Moving an animal out of danger is therefore only the first part of rehabilitation. The destination must support a life after human care ends.

Stage 1: Rescue and safe transport
Rescue teams coordinate with Indonesian conservation authorities, including regional BKSDA offices, to locate animals in burning forest, heavy smoke, plantations or isolated vegetation. The priority is a safe extraction that limits additional stress and injury. A weak animal may need to be captured from a tree or ground site; a frightened animal may require chemical restraint so it can be handled without a dangerous struggle.
On 30 August 2026, West Kalimantan BKSDA and YIARI evacuated a weak adult male from a community palm-oil plantation in fire-affected Ketapang. Plantation rescues matter because displaced orangutans can encounter people, machinery, roads and dogs while searching for the forest that fire removed.
Transport is arranged to a specialist facility rather than an improvised holding area. The receiving center needs veterinary staff, quarantine space and equipment for animals that may be dehydrated, malnourished, burned or affected by smoke.

At centers such as Nyaru Menteng and Samboja Lestari, veterinarians assess each arrival immediately. Triage establishes whether the animal has airway or smoke exposure, burns, dehydration, starvation, trauma, infection or another condition requiring urgent treatment. The team also records behavior and physical condition so later progress can be judged against the animal’s starting point.
Typical emergency care
- Oxygen: supplied when smoke exposure compromises breathing or the animal is in respiratory distress.
- Intravenous fluids: used to correct dangerous dehydration and support circulation when an animal is too weak to drink normally.
- Burn treatment: applied to damaged palms, soles or other skin while staff protect the tissue needed for climbing.
- Hydration and nutrition: restored gradually after food scarcity, with diets adjusted to the animal’s condition and ability to feed.
- Observation: continued after the immediate emergency, because weakness or respiratory problems may become clearer after transport.
Novita, an estimated three- to four-year-old female, illustrates the process. An Associated Press report from 10 October 2026 said she was found clinging to a nearly leafless tree in dense smoke. Her palms and soles were burned. Rescuers tranquilized her, administered oxygen and intravenous fluids, and transferred her to Nyaru Menteng for continued care.

Not every fire rescue has visible burns. The eight animals moved from Ketapang and North Kayong had no open wounds or broken bones, but malnutrition and dehydration still made them medically vulnerable. A normal-looking exterior cannot substitute for a veterinary examination.
Stage 3: Quarantine and monitoring
New arrivals remain in quarantine before joining other orangutans or entering a nursery or forest-school group. Isolation protects resident animals from infectious disease and gives staff time to monitor appetite, stool, breathing, wounds, weight and general behavior. It also prevents a newly rescued animal from being overwhelmed by a new social or physical environment while it is still recovering.

Veterinarians treat continuing problems, repeat examinations and determine whether the animal can tolerate climbing, foraging practice and interaction with caregivers. An orangutan that needs intensive medical support stays in clinical care longer; one that stabilizes can progress to rehabilitation.
Stage 4: Rebuilding survival skills
Young orangutans rescued after a fire may have lost access to their mothers, feeding trees and nesting sites. Rehabilitation centers replace those learning opportunities in stages. Save the Orangutan describes a progression from Baby School to Forest School and then to pre-release rainforest islands.
Baby School
Very young animals receive close supervision, appropriate food and opportunities to develop movement and social responses. Caregivers model or facilitate behaviors that a mother would normally teach, while avoiding unnecessary dependence on people. The objective is not simply to make an infant healthy; it is to build the foundation for climbing, handling food and moving through vegetation.

Forest School
As an orangutan grows stronger, daily activities become more challenging and less human-directed. Staff provide natural materials and a forest setting in which the animal can practice:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- climbing and controlled movement through the canopy;
- locomotion on branches, ropes and uneven surfaces;
- identifying and collecting appropriate foods;
- feeding itself rather than waiting for a caregiver;
- building sleeping nests;
- using shelter and space safely around other orangutans.
These skills are evaluated over time. A single successful climb or meal does not prove that an animal can survive independently. Staff look for consistent self-feeding, competent movement, nest construction and appropriate responses to the environment.
Pre-release forest or island training
Before a permanent release, suitable orangutans may spend time in a forest enclosure or pre-release island. These areas offer more natural choices and fewer direct interventions than a nursery. The animal must find food, select sleeping locations and move through the habitat with limited assistance. Four Paws describes the purpose of forest school as teaching “essential skills that, once they reach adolescence in a few years’ time, they can return to their natural environment to live freely and independently.”
How centers decide whether an orangutan can be released
Release is based on several tests considered together rather than on age alone. Staff evaluate the following four decision axes:
| Decision axis | What staff look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Medical readiness | Recovery from injuries or illness, adequate condition and the ability to cope without intensive treatment | A release should not expose an animal to a preventable medical crisis far from a clinic |
| Natural behavior | Climbing, locomotion, self-feeding, foraging, nest-building and appropriate use of forest space | These behaviors replace the food, shelter and protection once supplied by a mother or caregivers |
| Disease and welfare risk | Quarantine clearance and a health profile compatible with other animals and the destination forest | Introducing infection or an animal unable to cope can harm both the individual and the wider population |
| Habitat quality and connectivity | Natural food and water, nesting trees, intact forest and links to neighboring habitat | A healthy animal still needs enough resources and room to establish a viable range |
Staff delay release when veterinary fitness or natural skills are inadequate. This caution protects the animal from a fast return to hunger, injury or human conflict. There is no controlled clinical success rate or verified average rehabilitation duration for orangutans rescued specifically from fires, so a center cannot responsibly promise that every rescue will follow the same timetable.

Choosing and preparing the release forest
A release site is assessed as carefully as the animal. YIARI’s Batu Nyambu relocation demonstrates the checklist used after the 2026 Ketapang and North Kayong rescues: intact habitat, food, water, nesting trees and forest connections. Connectivity is important because isolated forest can recreate the same problem that caused the rescue, leaving animals stranded when local food runs out or another disturbance occurs.
Managed landscapes identified by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation include Bukit Batikap Protection Forest, Bukit Baka Bukit Raya National Park and the Kehje Sewen Forest concession. Each release decision still depends on current capacity, habitat condition, disease safeguards and the individual animal’s needs. A named landscape is not an automatic destination for every orangutan.
Teams may monitor released animals after they enter the forest. Monitoring can reveal whether an animal is finding food, building nests, moving normally and avoiding dangerous contact with people. Post-release information also helps staff identify problems early and improve future decisions.
When release is not safe
Some orangutans should not be returned to the wild. The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation uses the term “unreleasable” for animals whose prolonged captivity, obesity, psychological or stereotypic behavior, infectious disease, disability or underdeveloped natural skills make independent survival unsafe.
Sanctuary care is not abandonment. Unreleasable orangutans can live on forest-like sanctuary islands with staff oversight, supplementary food and continuing health checks. The environment gives them space to climb and express natural behaviors while ensuring that an animal unable to cope with all the demands of wild life is not placed in avoidable danger.

What the 2026 fire rescues show
Eight orangutans moved after assessment
The 13 October 2026 Associated Press report said eight orangutans rescued from fire-affected parts of Ketapang and North Kayong were examined and observed at a YIARI center before relocation to Batu Nyambu. Their malnutrition and dehydration, despite the absence of open wounds or fractures, show why triage must look beyond visible burns.
Novita’s smoke and burn injuries
Novita’s rescue on or before 10 October 2026 shows the emergency side of the work: dense smoke, a nearly leafless tree, burned palms and soles, tranquilization, oxygen, intravenous fluids and transfer to Nyaru Menteng. Her case required stabilization before any question of forest-school training or release could be considered.
The wider response
Indonesian authorities, as reported by the Associated Press in 2026, said more than 270 wild animals had been rescued, rehabilitated or guided to safer habitat in Indonesian Borneo, including 46 orangutans rescued by YIARI. The figure covers a broader wildlife response, not a measured success rate for orangutan rehabilitation.

How people can support the process responsibly
Rescue, quarantine, nursery care, forest-school training and post-release monitoring require specialized staff and facilities. The Orangutan Project describes veterinary, quarantine, nursery and socialisation facilities at Nyaru Menteng and says adoption-program funds support care and post-release monitoring. Save the Orangutan documents support for rescue teams and Borneo Orangutan Survival rehabilitation centers.
When evaluating a donation or adoption program, look for clear information about the center’s veterinary work, quarantine, rehabilitation stages, release-site management and monitoring after release. A contribution should support the whole pathway rather than only the dramatic moment of capture. Current donation, adoption and tracking terms can change, so readers should check the organization’s current information before paying.
The practical answer
Fire-rescued orangutans are rehabilitated through a sequence: safe evacuation, veterinary stabilization, quarantine, staged skills training, pre-release assessment and either release into protected connected forest or long-term sanctuary care. Burns and smoke exposure may require oxygen, fluids and wound treatment, while animals weakened without obvious injuries may need prolonged nutritional support. Returning an orangutan to the wild is possible only when the individual and the habitat are ready at the same time.
