A new MIT-developed elastomer sheet reconstructs its own three-dimensional form by measuring how bending changes light in embedded optical waveguides. LEDs illuminate the guides, photodiodes read the outgoing light, and an optimization model converts the combined signals into a surface shape in real time.
How a flexible sheet can know its shape
The sensing layer is built from silicone waveguides rather than rigid electronic strain gauges. Each guide has a higher-refractive-index core surrounded by lower-index cladding, so light normally travels by total internal reflection. One side of the core is deliberately roughened. When that guide bends toward its rough side, it scatters light differently than when it bends toward its smooth side. The amount of light reaching the photodiode therefore provides a directional curvature signal.

From light readings to a surface
One waveguide cannot uniquely identify every possible bend: different shapes can produce similar intensity changes. The sheet therefore combines readings from guides placed in multiple orientations. A constrained optimization model estimates the surface that best fits all measured curvatures while assuming bending-dominant deformation. The result is a three-dimensional reconstruction rather than a single angle or one-dimensional strain value.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the guides are arranged redundantly
The prototype uses a zig-zag layout so that otherwise ambiguous shapes produce distinguishable signal patterns. Redundancy also lets the reconstruction continue when individual guides stop working, instead of losing the entire sensing surface.

The paper by Yu, Cao and Becker was first published on 29 July 2026, according to its Wiley Online Library record. MIT describes the work as a fully soft sensing surface intended for interaction with people or other compliant environments. Qifan Yu, a mechanical-engineering graduate student at MIT, said the setup is “targeting fully soft and stretchable sensing surfaces so it’s potentially safer for interacting with a human or a soft environment.”
Accuracy, speed and resilience
The system performs real-time reconstruction with sub-centimeter accuracy. In MIT’s comparison with molded, three-dimensional reference shapes, the distance between the actual and reconstructed surfaces was below 0.4 cm. MIT’s report contrasts that result with roughly 1–2 cm errors reported for some rigid-sensor designs; those figures describe the comparison systems, not this sheet.

| Evidence | Result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Physical shape comparison | Error below 0.4 cm | MIT measurement against 3D-printed or molded reference shapes |
| Damage simulation | RMSE below 0.3 cm | Simulation with as many as three of the 14 guides damaged |
| Operating regime | Real-time, sub-centimeter reconstruction | Designed primarily for bending-dominant surfaces |
Damage tolerance comes from solving for the surface with many overlapping measurements. If a guide is cut or its optical signal is lost, the algorithm can infer the missing information from the remaining channels, although more damage will eventually reduce accuracy or make a shape unidentifiable.
Can optical fibers sense bending?
Yes, but this design is not a conventional glass-fiber strain sensor. Its waveguides are soft, molded elastomer channels engineered to leak different amounts of light under opposite bending directions. The roughened interface produces an approximately linear, bidirectional curvature response over the intended range, making the optical signal easier to use in the reconstruction model while preserving the sheet’s compliance.

The guides primarily report curvature. Stretch, shear and highly localized geometric features are not independently measured with the current architecture, so a shape that depends strongly on those deformation modes can exceed the model’s assumptions.
What the sheet could sense beyond shape
Pressure sensitivity gives the matrix a second function: it can report applied force as well as surface form. In an upper-arm demonstration, the system detected joint motion and external forces, indicating a route to wearable interfaces that distinguish movement from contact.

Current limits and the engineering trade-offs
| Limitation | Practical consequence | Proposed direction |
|---|---|---|
| About 5 mm thickness | Less conformal than an ultrathin film | Use narrower guides and additional layers |
| Inextensible perimeter wires | The complete assembly is not yet fully stretchable | Replace wiring with stretchable electronics |
| Bending-focused model | Stretch and shear can be misinterpreted or missed | Add strain and shear sensors |
| Curvature target up to 30 m−1 | More extreme bends fall outside the demonstrated regime | Expand calibration and model coverage |
| Limited fine-feature resolution | Small, complex three-dimensional details are not yet reconstructed in full | Increase guide density or layer count |
Calibration is another practical consideration. The optimization model must relate each guide’s optical response to curvature and account for the sheet’s geometry. A wearable version would also need to handle differences in mounting, body shape, temperature and repeated loading.

- Mechanical compliance: inspect thickness, hard components and whether the entire assembly, including leads, can stretch.
- Graceful failure: find out how many damaged channels the algorithm can tolerate and how failure is detected.
- Calibration burden: verify whether each sheet needs individual calibration or body-specific fitting.
- Multimodal sensing: check whether pressure or force is measured alongside shape.
What an earlier optical sheet study showed
A separate 2023 study used LEDs, photodetectors and an autoregression-based decoder on an A5 flexible sensor and a fish-shaped prototype. It reported an RMSE of 0.27 mm and a light-intensity change below 0.31% over 1,000 cycles. Those results belong to that earlier system; they are not performance claims for the 2026 MIT sheet.
Is this a product you can buy?
No identified retail sensor reproduces this prototype’s combination of molded silicone guides, optical readout and constrained shape-reconstruction software. The work is a research prototype. Building a comparable system would require silicone molding, LEDs, photodiodes, optical measurement equipment, mechanical fixtures and a calibrated reconstruction program. Generic fiber-optic parts alone would not provide the cited sensing behavior or accuracy.
