Optical force sensors do not “see” force directly. They convert force into a tiny, measurable change—such as the deflection of a beam, the position of a trapped particle, or a shift in reflected wavelength—and use light to read that change. In some instruments, light is the calibrated force being applied; in others, it is only the ruler that measures a mechanical response.
The distinction matters. A laser striking a surface is not automatically a force meter. Useful measurements require a defined mechanical structure or optical trap, a calibrated readout, control of vibration and temperature, and an uncertainty analysis that includes the detector and reference—not just the sensor element.

What an optical force sensor actually measures
Force is usually inferred from a secondary quantity. A known force may bend a miniature cantilever. A trapped microscopic object may move when an external interaction acts on it. A strained fiber Bragg grating (FBG) may change the wavelength it reflects. In each case, an optical system measures the secondary change and a calibration model converts it to force.
The general measurement chain is:
- Interaction: an applied force, photon pressure, contact, tension, or biological interaction acts on a mechanical or optical element.
- Transduction: the force produces displacement, vibration, strain, or a change in an optical spectrum.
- Optical readout: an interferometer, imaging system, spectrometer, or wavelength interrogator resolves that change.
- Calibration: stiffness, geometry, optical power, wavelength references, and environmental corrections connect the reading to force units.
Because each stage contributes error, a sensor’s advertised sensitivity is not the same as the uncertainty of the complete instrument.

How can light exert a force?
Photons carry momentum. When light is absorbed or reflected, momentum is transferred to the material. The resulting radiation-pressure force is minuscule, but it is predictable from calibrated optical power and can therefore serve as a force reference.
A 2016 National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) account, updated in 2025, uses a one-watt laser beam as an explanatory example that produces a force in the nanonewton range. The figure describes that example, not a universal output for every laser or surface. Lower optical power, imperfect reflection, beam losses, and geometry all change the force.
Light can therefore play two different roles:
- Force source: photon pressure is deliberately applied to a mirror or particle, providing a known input.
- Displacement probe: a separate force moves a structure, while reflected or transmitted light measures the movement.
Confusing these roles leads to incorrect comparisons between optical tweezers, interferometric cantilevers, and fiber sensors.

NIST’s small-force prototype uses a cantilever—a beam fixed at one end, like a microscopic diving board—with a highly reflective, gold-coated surface. Light delivered through an optical fiber reflects from that surface. The photon momentum produces a tiny deflection or vibration.
Step 1: Apply a calibrated optical force
The optical power is measured and controlled. Reflection transfers momentum to the cantilever, creating a force reference that can be related to the beam’s power and optical path. The force is not inferred from brightness alone; the power calibration and optical geometry are part of the measurement.
Step 2: Let the cantilever respond
The beam’s stiffness and resonant behavior determine how much it moves for a given force. A larger force generally produces a larger displacement, while a smaller force produces motion that is easier to hide with vibration, thermal noise, or electronic noise.

Step 3: Read displacement interferometrically
An interferometer detects changes in optical path length. As the reflective surface moves, the phase of the returning light changes. The resulting interference signal reveals displacement far more precisely than ordinary visual imaging.

Step 4: Convert displacement to force
A calibration model combines the cantilever’s mechanical response with the optical readout. NIST describes a dual optical-cavity arrangement in which one cavity supplies a photon-pressure reference while the other measures mirror separation proportional to the applied force. This architecture links the force input and displacement measurement within one optical system.
The complete chain can be summarized as calibrated light power → photon pressure → cantilever motion → interferometric displacement → calculated force. Stiffness, mirror reflectivity, alignment, cavity geometry, vibration isolation, and detector noise determine the final uncertainty.
What force range has been demonstrated?
The NIST account describes experiments spanning micronewtons down to 15 femtonewtons. That range belongs to the specific systems and operating conditions reported there; it is not a specification for optical force sensors in general. The same account discusses a proposed single-photon approach aimed at zeptonewton-scale forces, but states that the researchers were not yet close to achieving it. A proposed limit must not be presented as an available capability.
How optical tweezers measure interactions
Optical tweezers use a tightly focused light field to trap and move a microscopic object in three dimensions. The field creates a restoring force around the trap position. If an external interaction pulls the object away from that position, the displacement or motion can be interpreted with a calibrated trap model.

This arrangement differs fundamentally from the cantilever example. In the cantilever system, photon pressure is a known input and an interferometer reads a mechanical displacement. In optical tweezers, the light field itself forms the trap, and the trapped object’s response reveals another force acting on it.

NIST’s description of its optical-tweezers work reports manipulation precision of 0.1 nanometer for micrometer-scale objects. That is a precision figure for the work described on its page, created in 2010 and updated in 2024—not a universal performance promise for every tweezer setup.
What tweezers are useful for
- Measuring interactions between biological molecules or cells without a mechanical probe touching them.
- Holding multiple particles independently in three dimensions.
- Observing how a trapped object responds to fluid drag, binding, or another applied interaction.
- Combining holographic traps with scanning-probe methods for nanoscale manipulation and measurement.
Sample refractive index, heating, optical damage, Brownian motion, fluid viscosity, and calibration of trap stiffness all affect the result. The technique is especially valuable when contact with the sample would alter the interaction being measured.
Interferometers, images, and wavelengths: three optical readouts
Interferometric displacement
Interferometers compare optical paths. A fraction-of-a-wavelength path change can produce a measurable phase shift, making them well suited to mirrors, cantilevers, membranes, and other structures whose motion is too small for ordinary imaging.

Optical-tweezers systems commonly track the trapped object’s position with a camera or a position-sensitive detector. The measured fluctuations and displacement are interpreted through the trap’s calibrated stiffness and the surrounding medium’s properties.
Wavelength tracking in an FBG
An FBG reflects a narrow spectral peak. Strain or force changes the grating spacing, shifting that peak. An interrogator measures the wavelength and a calibration converts the shift to strain or force. This is an indirect measurement: the wavelength instrument and its reference are part of the uncertainty budget.
Why calibration determines whether a tiny reading is trustworthy
A very small displacement is not automatically an accurate force value. Calibration must establish the mechanical response, optical scale, and environmental corrections. NIST’s small-mass and force technology description discusses built-in self-calibration and a dual-cavity approach. Its force-reference work compares photon pressure derived from calibrated laser power with an electrostatic force balance, showing how optical measurements can be related to other traceable force references.

That description applies to the particular NIST designs. It does not mean every optical force sensor is self-calibrating. A practical uncertainty budget may include:
- Calibration of optical power and detector responsivity.
- Mechanical stiffness, resonance frequency, and geometry.
- Interferometer phase or wavelength scale.
- Vibration, acoustic coupling, and electromagnetic interference.
- Temperature-dependent expansion, refractive-index changes, and laser drift.
- Alignment, beam pointing, surface reflectivity, and stray reflections.
- Model assumptions about fluid drag, trap stiffness, or contact conditions.
Traceability is a property of the complete calibrated system, not merely of a reflective coating, fiber grating, or laser diode.
What FBG measurements teach about optical uncertainty
A NIST metrology study, “Fundamental limits in fiber Bragg grating peak wavelength measurements” (2005), illustrates how the readout can dominate performance. In the studied strain-sensing context, wavelength uncertainty as small as 1 picometer corresponded to nearly 1 microstrain.
The same publication reported that optical spectrum-analyzer measurements were difficult to make more precise than 10 picometers in that setup. Without calibration to a known wavelength reference, uncertainty could be as large as 1 nanometer. It also found that athermally packaged gratings could drift and undergo large wavelength jumps, making stability better than 4 picometers per year difficult to achieve in the studied case.
These are results from a 2005 investigation, not current universal specifications for all FBG interrogators or packages. The lesson remains important: when a force is inferred from a wavelength shift, interrogator resolution, reference stability, packaging, temperature, and calibration must be analyzed alongside the grating’s nominal sensitivity.

Choose the method by the object and interaction you need to isolate, not by the word “optical.” A cantilever is often appropriate when a calibrated force reference and a rigid mechanical target are available. Tweezers suit noncontact manipulation of microscopic samples. FBGs are practical when strain must be monitored along or around a fiber, provided the wavelength chain can be calibrated and stabilized.
A practical workflow for designing a tiny-force measurement
- Define the measurand. Decide whether you need absolute force, relative change, displacement, strain, trap stiffness, or an interaction energy. Ambiguous measurands produce ambiguous calibrations.
- Select the transducer. Use a cantilever, trapped particle, membrane, or grating whose mechanical response matches the expected force and bandwidth.
- Choose the optical readout. Interferometry is suited to very small displacement; imaging is useful for tracked particles; wavelength interrogation suits FBG strain.
- Set the operating range. Prevent saturation while preserving enough signal above detector and environmental noise. The cited 15-femtonewton result is a context-specific demonstration, not a design target for every system.
- Calibrate the scale. Establish optical power, stiffness, wavelength reference, geometry, and any fluid or temperature corrections with traceable standards where possible.
- Characterize noise and drift. Measure the baseline with no applied force, vary optical power and temperature, and check vibration sensitivity and long-term drift.
- Validate independently. Compare the optical result with an electrostatic, gravimetric, mechanical, or other reference appropriate to the range. Agreement under one condition does not remove the need to test operating limits.
- Report conditions. State wavelength, power, geometry, sample, temperature, bandwidth, calibration date, uncertainty, and whether a value is a single measurement or a long-term stability result.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“A stronger laser always gives a better force measurement.”
More power can increase photon pressure or optical signal, but it can also heat a sample, saturate a detector, move a trap, or destabilize a cavity. Optimize signal and uncertainty together.
“Nanometer displacement means nanonewton accuracy.”
Displacement must be combined with a known stiffness or force model. An uncertain spring constant, drifting alignment, or unmeasured vibration can dominate the force result.
“The sensor element sets the total resolution.”
For FBGs, the interrogator and wavelength reference can contribute more uncertainty than the grating itself. The 2005 NIST study’s picometer and nanometer figures demonstrate why the readout chain must be specified.
“Optical tweezers and photon-pressure cantilevers are the same technology.”
Both use light-related forces, but their measurement arrangements differ. Tweezers trap and manipulate an object; the cantilever example uses photon pressure as a calibrated input and interferometry as the displacement readout.
“A proposed sensitivity is an achieved specification.”
The single-photon, zeptonewton concept discussed by NIST was explicitly a future goal. Keep proposed performance separate from measured results.
Where these methods are most useful
Optical force measurements are valuable when contact would disturb the experiment, when the force is too small for a conventional load cell, or when the measurement must be localized to a microscopic object. Applications include studying biological binding, calibrating miniature mechanical structures, comparing force references, monitoring strain in hard-to-reach locations, and probing interactions at surfaces or in fluids.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Each application imposes different priorities. A biological experiment may prioritize noncontact operation and low heating. A metrology experiment may prioritize traceability and long-term stability. A structural-monitoring system may prioritize multiplexed fibers and environmental compensation. The “best” optical sensor is therefore determined by the measurand, sample, bandwidth, and uncertainty requirement—not by optical technology alone.
The main idea to remember
Optical sensors detect tiny forces by making force create a measurable optical change. Light may push a calibrated cantilever, hold a particle in a trap, or reveal strain through a wavelength shift. The trustworthy force value comes only after the mechanical response, optical readout, calibration references, and environmental noise are treated as one measurement system.
