The fiber link is not an optical computer: CPUs, GPUs and networking ASICs still perform calculations electronically. Optics changes how those chips exchange data, allowing high-bandwidth links over distance and, in newer designs, moving the electrical-to-optical conversion much closer to the silicon.
Fiber already connects switches, servers and other data-center equipment. The newer development is architectural: near-package optics (NPO), co-packaged optics (CPO) and optical-I/O chiplets place photonic components beside or inside a compute or switching package. That can reduce lossy electrical routing, but it also introduces difficult thermal, manufacturing, fiber-attachment and serviceability problems.

How do optical interconnects work?
An optical interconnect is a communications link with four functional stages. Electronics create and format the data; a transmitter turns it into modulated light; fiber carries the light; and a receiver turns it back into an electrical signal for the destination chip.

- Optical transmission: A driver circuit feeds a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) or optical engine. A laser supplies light, and a modulator encodes the electrical data onto that light. Some designs use wavelength-division multiplexing, assigning separate data channels to different wavelengths.
- Fiber propagation: Single-mode optical fiber guides the modulated light between the sending and receiving equipment. Multiple fiber pairs can operate in parallel for greater aggregate bandwidth.
- Optical reception: A photodetector converts the light back into an electrical current. Receiver electronics amplify, equalize and retime the signal before delivering it to the destination ASIC, CPU, GPU or system board.
The optical path carries information; it does not perform the matrix multiplications or other AI operations. Every practical link still includes electrical drivers, control logic, clocking and error-management circuits on both ends.

How do AI chips communicate in a data center?
AI systems exchange data at several scales. Inside a server, accelerators communicate across package traces, board-level links or specialized fabrics. Between servers, network adapters and top-of-rack switches carry traffic over copper or fiber. Larger clusters add leaf-and-spine switch tiers, so a training job may send gradients, parameters and activation data through multiple switch hops before reaching another accelerator.
At lower rates or very short distances, copper traces and cables remain practical. As signaling rates rise, electrical loss, dispersion, crosstalk and reflections make the channel harder to design. Retimers and equalizers can restore signal quality, but they consume power and occupy board space. A conventional optical module solves the long-distance part by converting the signal at the front panel, while the switch ASIC still connects to that module through an electrical path across the board.
Optical I/O aims to move the conversion point toward the processor or switch silicon. The shorter electrical path can support denser ports or reduce the amount of signal conditioning required. It does not automatically reduce end-to-end latency: serialization, conversion, buffering, propagation time and the network protocol still determine the total delay.

- Reach: Fiber maintains signal integrity over distances that would require substantial electrical compensation in copper.
- Bandwidth density: Multiple wavelengths and fiber pairs can carry independent channels through a compact cable.
- Electrical isolation: Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference and does not create a conductive path between cabinets.
- Scaling pressure: As switch and accelerator bandwidth rises, moving data optically can avoid extending high-loss board traces.
Optics also has costs. Lasers, modulators, detectors, control electronics, connectors and fiber-management hardware add components and assembly steps. Engineers therefore compare the whole system, not just the cable: bandwidth per port, energy per bit, reach, latency, thermal load, manufacturing yield, reliability, repair time, capital cost and ecosystem maturity all matter.

What are pluggable optics, near-package optics and co-packaged optics?
| Architecture | Where conversion occurs | Main advantage | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pluggable optics | Removable transceiver at the equipment faceplate | Familiar module boundary, field replacement and straightforward fiber access | Electrical traces still run from the ASIC to the module; power, density and signal-conditioning requirements can be significant |
| Near-package optics (NPO) | Optical engine positioned close to the ASIC or package | Shorter electrical path while retaining some separation from the main package | Fiber routing, packaging, service access and system integration remain difficult |
| Co-packaged optics (CPO) | Optical engine integrated in the same package as the switch ASIC or compute silicon | Very short electrical connection and potential for dense optical I/O | Thermal management, fiber attachment, manufacturing yield, field service and standards are challenging |
| Compute optical-I/O chiplet | Optical subsystem co-packaged with a CPU, GPU or SoC | Could bring high-bandwidth optical connectivity directly to compute packages | Many announcements are demonstrations or roadmaps rather than evidence of broad production deployment |
A conventional pluggable design may place the fiber connector at the faceplate and leave roughly a foot of copper traces to the chip in an illustrative system description. That distance varies by equipment design; it is not a universal measurement. NPO and CPO move the fiber termination closer to the silicon, reducing that electrical span.
What is co-packaged optics?
In CPO, optical engines sit in the same package or tightly integrated substrate as a high-speed ASIC. Electrical connections between the ASIC and the optical engine are therefore much shorter than the traces leading to a front-panel module. The engine still needs a laser, modulator, photodetector and driver and receiver electronics, while fibers must be attached to the package through arrays or compact connectors.
Package integration can be built in several ways. A two-dimensional arrangement places optical and electronic dies side by side. A 2.5-dimensional design uses an interposer to connect multiple dies. Three-dimensional heterogeneous stacking puts components in vertically integrated layers. Each approach changes heat flow, assembly tolerances, test access and repair options.

Some designs keep the light source outside the hottest package and deliver light through fibers. This can simplify thermal management and allow an external light-source module to be replaced on site. It does not remove the need for precise fiber alignment or optical monitoring, but it separates a serviceable element from the ASIC package.

What has been demonstrated?
Intel reported a live CPU-co-packaged optical-I/O demonstration at OFC 2024. The company specified 64 channels operating at 32 Gbps in each direction, up to 100 meters over single-mode fiber, and eight fiber pairs with eight DWDM wavelengths on each pair. The aggregate capacity was stated as 4 Tbps bidirectionally.
Intel also reported 5 pJ per bit for that co-packaged demonstration, compared with about 15 pJ per bit for the pluggable optical-transceiver modules used as its comparison. Those are vendor figures for a particular demonstration and comparison; they are not an industry-wide result or a guarantee for every CPO product. Intel’s product information describes a first-generation optical-I/O chiplet with 4 Tbps bidirectional capability over standard single-mode fiber and a design target for next-generation CPUs, GPUs, IPUs and other SoCs.
| Reported specification | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Bidirectional capacity | 4 Tbps | Intel figure for its OFC 2024 optical-I/O demonstration |
| Parallel channels | 64 channels at 32 Gbps in each direction | Configuration reported by Intel for that demonstration |
| Fiber reach | Up to 100 m | Single-mode-fiber distance stated for the demonstration |
| Wavelength and fiber arrangement | Eight fiber pairs, eight DWDM wavelengths per pair | Demonstration architecture, not a universal link design |
| Energy comparison | 5 pJ/bit versus about 15 pJ/bit | Intel’s co-packaged result versus its pluggable-transceiver comparison |
| Silicon-photonics shipments | More than 8 million PICs and more than 32 million on-chip lasers | Intel-reported platform totals for lasers embedded in pluggable transceivers; not compute optical-I/O shipments |
Intel cautioned that practical applications may be limited to tens of meters when time-of-flight latency matters. A 100-meter optical reach therefore should not be read as a recommendation to place every optical engine that far from its compute package.
What products and roadmaps indicate about deployment
Vendor announcements show several maturity levels. A laboratory demonstration proves that a link can operate under stated conditions. A product announcement describes an intended commercial design. A published availability target gives a schedule, but not proof that systems are installed at scale. Shipment totals may refer to an established pluggable-photonics platform rather than newer compute chiplets.

On March 18, 2025, NVIDIA announced Spectrum-X Photonics Ethernet and Quantum-X Photonics InfiniBand CPO switches with ecosystem partners. Its product information lists up to 409.6 Tb/s for Spectrum-X Ethernet Photonics and points to second-half 2026 availability. The announcement described Quantum-X availability later in 2025. These dates and specifications are vendor statements and can change; they should be checked against current product documentation before a purchasing decision.
Corning has described a multiyear partnership involving fiber-to-PIC connector technology, fiber-array units, compact connectors and fiber optimized for CPO. Ciena’s Vesta optical engines illustrate another approach in which external light-source modules can be replaced on site. Such components matter because a CPO system is a complete mechanical, optical, electrical and service architecture, not simply an ASIC with a few fibers attached.

Thermal design
High-speed electronics and photonics occupy a dense package or enclosure. Lasers and modulators have operating-temperature limits, while the switching ASIC may dissipate substantial heat. Cooling hardware, airflow, optical efficiency and wavelength stability must be designed together.

Manufacturing yield
CPO combines semiconductor dies, photonic dies, substrates, drivers, detectors and fiber attachments. A defect in any one element can reduce package yield. Testing an optical path after assembly is more complicated than testing a removable module, so manufacturers need repeatable alignment, calibration and burn-in procedures.

Fiber routing and alignment
Many fibers must leave a small package without sharp bends, contamination or mechanical stress. Array connectors and fiber-array units require micron-scale alignment and protection against vibration and repeated thermal cycling.
Serviceability
A pluggable transceiver can normally be replaced without replacing the switch ASIC. A failed co-packaged optical engine may require a much more involved repair or board swap. External light sources are one strategy for keeping at least part of the optical system replaceable in the field.
Standards and interoperability
Optical engines, connectors, electrical interfaces and management schemes are not automatically interoperable across vendors. Industry standards are still developing, and a buyer must verify the complete platform compatibility rather than assuming that any engine or fiber array will fit any CPO switch.
How should an organization choose an architecture?
- Map the distances: Separate package, board, rack, row and building links. Copper may remain the simplest option at very short reach, while fiber becomes more attractive as distance and bandwidth increase.
- Measure the traffic pattern: All-to-all AI training traffic places different demands on the network than occasional storage or management traffic. Determine required aggregate bandwidth, oversubscription and burst behavior.
- Set a power budget: Compare complete-link energy, including drivers, retimers, cooling and optical modules. Do not compare a transmitter chip with an entire copper system.
- Define latency limits: Include serialization, conversion, switch buffering and propagation. Optical transmission alone does not establish end-to-end latency.
- Plan maintenance: Decide which elements must be field replaceable and how a failed engine, laser or fiber assembly will be diagnosed.
- Validate ecosystem support: Confirm connector standards, management software, spare availability, test equipment and qualified integrators for the intended switch or accelerator platform.
- Classify the evidence: Label every claimed bandwidth, reach, energy figure and delivery date as a measured demonstration, a product specification, a target or an installed-production result.
What fiber actually carries the signal?
Single-mode fiber is the medium cited for Intel’s optical-I/O description and demonstration. An LC-to-LC single-mode patch cord can illustrate the physical concept, but a patch cable is not a substitute for engineered, qualified data-center interconnect hardware. Real deployments also require approved transceivers or optical engines, connector cleaning, bend-radius control, link budgets, monitoring and structured fiber management.
Where optical interconnects are headed
The near-term path is likely to be mixed: pluggable optics will continue serving many established links, while NPO and CPO appear where electrical reach, port density or power limits justify the packaging complexity. Compute optical-I/O chiplets could connect CPUs, GPUs and custom accelerators to fabrics without routing every high-speed lane across a large circuit board.
The technology will mature only when packaging yield, thermal control, fiber attachment, service procedures and common interfaces become as dependable as the electronics they connect. Demonstrations such as Intel’s show what is technically possible; announced switch products show commercial intent; neither category alone proves that every AI data center should replace its pluggable or copper links.
The practical answer is therefore conditional: use optics when the required bandwidth, distance or electrical-loss budget exceeds what copper can deliver economically, and consider CPO or NPO when moving conversion closer to silicon produces a measurable system benefit that outweighs packaging and service costs.
