For Ohio State games against Big Ten opponents in 2026, the conference requires four availability reports from each team, ending two hours before kickoff. The reports show whether a player is expected to be available; they do not reveal a diagnosis or guarantee playing time. Ohio State’s separate concussion policy sets out a medically supervised process for evaluation and return to play.
Where to find Ohio State’s Big Ten availability report
The Big Ten says its 2026 football availability reports will be published on BigTen.org. This schedule applies to games against conference opponents, not to Ohio State’s nonconference games. The conference announcement does not establish what reporting process Ohio State uses for nonconference matchups.

Available means not listed as unavailable; it does not promise that the player will start, take the field, or play a particular number of snaps.

What the availability labels tell you—and what they do not
A label is a forecast of availability for one game at one point in the reporting week. The designation may change in a later report as game day approaches. The categories are not diagnoses, probabilities, explanations of an injury, or guarantees of participation. They also do not describe a player’s expected role or playing time.

The report is a public status tool, distinct from clinical care. Its stated purpose is to communicate whether a player is expected to be available; the category alone does not explain why a player is absent or restricted.
How Ohio State has described roster decisions
Available public remarks offer examples of how Ohio State has discussed injury disclosure and preparing the roster, but they should not be mistaken for a current, exhaustive written process for every injury.

Injury disclosure remarks from 2019 and 2020
On August 27, 2019, head coach Ryan Day said the university had discussed its injury-policy approach with administration and medical staff before making a decision. He did not lay out the authority of each group or a complete decision tree. On March 2, 2020, Day said the team tried to avoid disclosing whether listed injuries were long-term or season-ending, and said the players discussed then were expected back in September. That was a description of public communication at the time, not a current forecast or a promise about what Ohio State will disclose in every case.

An Ohio State Athletics media report from November 20, 2024, described a concrete roster adjustment after Seth’s injury: Day said Carson would move to center and Austin to left guard. Offensive lineman Donovan Jackson said the team prepared younger players to be ready to enter a game. This illustrates position adjustments and preparation for replacements; it does not establish a universal written protocol.

Ohio State’s concussion evaluation and return-to-play policy
Ohio State’s published concussion policy addresses concussion-like symptoms specifically, not every type of injury. A student-athlete showing such symptoms is removed from practice or competition for evaluation by athletic training or physician staff. If a concussion is confirmed, the athlete cannot return to participation on the same calendar day.
Return to athletic activity follows a supervised progression:
- Light aerobic exercise without resistance training.
- Sport-specific activity without head impact.
- Non-contact practice with progressive resistance training.
- Unrestricted training.
- Return to competition.
The team physician or the physician’s designee has final authority to clear a return to athletic activity under this policy. The NCAA’s concussion safety page provides the broader context: schools in all three NCAA divisions must maintain an updated concussion safety protocol and comply with association-wide interassociation recommendations. The NCAA says checklist, template, and fact-sheet modifications were approved in June 2026; Ohio State’s policy is the school-specific source for its process.
Quick Recap
How to use the report on game week
- Check that the matchup is against a Big Ten opponent; the 2026 conference schedule described here is limited to conference games.
- Look for the latest report on BigTen.org, keeping its timing in mind: the final report is due two hours before kickoff.
- Read the designation only as an availability status. Do not use it to infer a diagnosis, likelihood of playing, or expected workload.
- For concussion procedure, consult Ohio State’s published policy rather than treating a public availability label as a medical update.
