Feed gerbera daisies while they are actively growing and flowering, but use a schedule that matches the fertilizer: liquid feed may be applied every two weeks, complete fertilizer monthly, or controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season. For plants in pots, feed in spring and summer; for garden beds, monthly feeding during bloom is one supported option. Follow the product label for its dose and frequency, and do not combine these schedules.

How often should you fertilize gerberas in pots?

Feed container-grown gerberas during active growth, generally in spring and summer. The Royal Horticultural Society advises using a general-purpose liquid feed in that period at the dose and frequency on its packet. Clemson Cooperative Extension gives two alternatives: liquid fertilizer every two weeks, or controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season. UF/IFAS also recommends controlled-release fertilizer two or three times per season, or complete fertilizer monthly.

These are alternatives for different fertilizer types, not steps to stack together. Choose one product and follow its label. The interval for a particular liquid or controlled-release fertilizer depends on its formulation and directions.

How often should you fertilize gerberas in garden beds?

For plants in the ground, UC IPM recommends fertilizing monthly during the bloom period. UF/IFAS lists complete fertilizer monthly or controlled-release fertilizer two or three times during the growing season. A 2018 UC Cooperative Extension Colusa County newsletter describes balanced general-purpose garden fertilizer monthly through the growing season, or time-release fertilizer every six to eight weeks.

Sovata® Gerbera Full Diet, Powerful Organic Fertilizer for heavy flowering and fast growth of Gerbera Plants. (200 gm)
  • 🍀Complete Nutrition: Gerbera Full Diet organic fertilizer provides all essential nutrients and active microorganisms needed for full growth of Gerbera plants.
  • 🍀Boost Flower Growth: The active ingredients help increase flower production and support healthy blooming of Gerbera plants.
  • 🍀Balance Soil Conditions: It works to balance nitrogen levels in the soil, improve aeration, and regulate pH - creating optimal conditions for strong root development.
  • 🍀Enhance Microbe Population: Double filtering enriches the soil with beneficial microbes that break down nutrients into a bioavailable form easily absorbed by plant roots.
  • 🍀Prevent Nutritional Deficiencies: Using this all-in-one fertilizer eliminates issues from under or over-fertilizing and ensures Gerbera plants get precisely what they need to thrive.

Use the schedule that corresponds to the product you have, rather than applying multiple schedules at once. Bloom and growing seasons vary with local conditions, so time feeding to active growth and the fertilizer label.

Which fertilizer should you choose?

Both complete liquid fertilizers and controlled-release fertilizers are supported options. Compare the label’s intended use, application interval, and nutrient formulation. Gerberas can develop iron and manganese deficiencies; Clemson notes these can be an issue especially in potting soil, and UF/IFAS also flags them. When choosing a fertilizer, check whether it contains these micronutrients. That is a selection consideration, not a reason to add a separate supplement to every plant.

How to apply fertilizer without creating problems

  • Use only the dose and interval printed on the fertilizer packet; recommendations differ by product type.
  • Feed during active spring and summer growth for container plants, and during active growth or bloom for bed-grown plants.
  • Do not layer a two-week liquid schedule on top of monthly complete fertilizer or seasonal controlled-release applications.
  • Keep plants in fertile, well-drained soil. For garden beds, the RHS recommends a compost mulch; keep the gerbera crown above the soil surface to reduce the risk of rot.

Good feeding cannot compensate for unsuitable growing conditions. If a gerbera is struggling, consider soil drainage and crown placement as well as fertilizer choice before increasing feeding.
