Test cloud backups often enough to prove you can restore usable data and meet your recovery targets—not just that backup jobs complete. There is no universal schedule: set the interval for each workload based on its criticality, backup frequency, recovery objectives, and how long suitable recovery points remain available.
How often should you test cloud backups and recovery?
Use your recovery requirements to choose a repeatable schedule. NIST SP 800-209 offers an illustrative starting point: validate hourly copies daily, and daily copies every two weeks to monthly. NIST presents this as an example relationship between backup and validation frequency, not a rule for every organization. AWS says critical resources are often tested daily or weekly, with the cadence influenced by criticality and retention; that is AWS guidance, not an industry-wide mandate.
Set the interval workload by workload. Test more often when a service is highly critical, its recovery objectives are short, or its usable recovery points have a short retention window. A test should happen while the recovery points it is meant to validate are still available.
Translate recovery objectives into a schedule
AWS defines the recovery time objective (RTO) as the acceptable delay between a service interruption and restoration. The recovery point objective (RPO) is the acceptable amount of time since the last recovery point—in practical terms, the upper bound on tolerable data loss. Use both to decide how quickly a test must demonstrate recovery and how recent the recovered data must be. AWS explains these objectives in its backup strategy guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Record the schedule and its rationale for each workload. Revisit it after material changes to backup settings, encryption or access, application dependencies, or recovery procedures. Those changes can affect whether a previously successful recovery remains possible.
What counts as a real restore test?
A restore test deliberately recovers a backup using the established recovery procedure, then checks whether the result is usable. A green backup status—or a restore job marked complete—does not by itself prove that the data is intact, accessible, or sufficient to bring a service back.

Google Cloud recommends evaluating recovery tests against three criteria: data integrity, RTO, and RPO. AWS similarly recommends restoring to a new location and verifying that data is available, uncorrupted, accessible, and within the RPO; its guidance warns against restoring without actually querying or retrieving data to check usability.
Checks to include
- Integrity and usability: confirm expected data is present, readable, and uncorrupted; perform an application-level check where relevant.
- RTO: measure elapsed recovery time and compare it with the workload’s objective.
- RPO: identify the newest recovered record or item and compare its timestamp with the acceptable recovery point.
- Service dependencies: when recovery means restoring a service, test the application stack and critical infrastructure with the recovered data—not only the storage restore.
Google Cloud’s recovery-testing guidance recommends using a non-production environment and including the whole application stack and critical infrastructure in restoration tests. AWS Well-Architected likewise says to validate that backup implementation meets RTO and RPO through a recovery test in its REL09-BP04 guidance.

How to run tests safely and make the evidence useful
When feasible, restore into an isolated or non-production destination. Keep access to production data controlled, and include the credentials, encryption keys, networking, and dependencies the recovery path actually needs. Use the same recovery mechanism as production, or a sufficiently close equivalent, so the timings and findings reflect the real procedure.
- Choose a workload and recovery point. Record which backup or point in time you are testing and why it is suitable.
- Restore to a safe destination. Use a non-production or isolated environment when practical, with the access controls and dependencies needed for recovery.
- Run data and service checks. Verify integrity, accessibility, expected content, and application behavior where applicable.
- Measure against objectives. Capture start and end times for RTO, and the timestamp of the latest recovered data for RPO.
- Document findings and clean up. Record issues, evidence, and cleanup steps; remediate failures and retest as appropriate.
Microsoft notes that performing a full recovery test every time can be difficult, and advises defining the test’s scope, frequency, and method. One workable approach is to validate selected resources or components regularly and schedule broader application-level recovery exercises as needed. Make the scope explicit so a component check is not mistaken for proof of end-to-end recovery.

AWS Backup supports scheduled restore testing plans with configurable frequency and start time, monitors restore duration, and optionally supports validation. Its documentation says test resources are deleted after the validation window completes. Check the current AWS Backup restore-testing documentation for supported resource types and plan limits, and confirm service behavior before relying on automated cleanup.

A recovery exercise can show whether selected backups are available and intact through the tested recovery path. CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups for critical data and regular tests of backup availability and integrity in its #StopRansomware Guide. Include consideration of whether recovery depends on production credentials or infrastructure that could be compromised. A successful exercise is evidence about the scenario and resources tested; it does not prove immunity to every attack.
