There is no universal review deadline: MoneyHelper advises reviewing income protection regularly, but does not prescribe an annual interval. Its guidance is a useful UK starting point, not a rule for every policy or jurisdiction.
When should you review your cover?
Put a yearly check in your calendar so the review does not get forgotten. Treat that as a practical habit, not a formal requirement. Review sooner after a change that could affect how much protection your household needs or what support you would receive from work.

- Having a child or taking responsibility for another dependant.
- Taking out or materially changing a mortgage or other significant debt.
- A change in income, household expenses, or how household costs are divided.
- Starting a job with different sick pay or workplace cover, or leaving a job that provided benefits.
- Changing work pattern or becoming self-employed, if that changes your income-replacement needs.
MoneyHelper says circumstances can change and advises reviewing income protection regularly, without setting a fixed interval: MoneyHelper’s income protection guide. Aviva says it reminds its own customers about cover around a year after they reduce it; that is Aviva’s process, not an industry-wide schedule: Aviva life insurance guidance.

Life insurance pays out on death. It does not replace earnings if you are alive but unable to work. Check whether the payout and remaining term still fit your household’s debts, housing costs, dependants’ needs and other household income.
#1 Best Overall
- Amount and term: Consider whether the payout would still help cover a mortgage or other debts and support dependants for the intended period.
- Cover pattern: Level cover keeps the insured amount fixed; decreasing cover falls over time and is commonly designed to track a repayment mortgage; increasing cover rises according to the policy terms. Check that the structure still fits the purpose of the policy.
- Who benefits: Confirm who receives the payout and whether that arrangement still matches your wishes and circumstances.
- Workplace death-in-service benefit: Include it in your overall picture, but remember that employer-linked cover may end if you leave that job.

What to check in income protection
Income protection replaces part of your earnings if illness or injury prevents you from working. It is different from life insurance and from critical illness insurance, which pays a one-off amount if you meet the policy definition for a specified serious illness. Check the policy against your essential costs, savings and employer sick pay.

- Incapacity definition: Check how the policy defines being unable to work and whether that definition remains suitable for your job and circumstances.
- Conditions and exclusions: Read the policy wording for what is covered and any exclusions that matter to you.
- Policy end date: Confirm how long the cover lasts and whether that term still matches the period you need protection.
- Employer benefits: Reassess sick pay and other workplace protection. Better sick pay may reduce the gap private cover needs to fill; losing it may increase that gap.
MoneyHelper explains the purpose and features of income protection, including that it generally replaces only part of earnings: MoneyHelper’s income protection guide.

Does a review mean you should change your policy?
No. A review is a chance to check whether existing cover still fits, not an instruction to increase it or switch providers. Compare the policy’s terms and cost with the need you have identified. For a potential replacement, compare the premium basis as well as the payout, term, deferred period, incapacity definition, covered conditions and exclusions.

Do not cancel existing cover until replacement protection has been accepted, is in force and the first payment has been made. New cover may cost more as you get older, may not cover pre-existing health conditions, and an insurer may not reinstate a cancelled policy. MoneyHelper sets out these considerations when discussing changes to life insurance: MoneyHelper’s life insurance guide.
Do not assume that every change in health or lifestyle must be reported after a policy starts. Requirements depend on the contract. Aviva’s guidance for its own customers says post-start health or lifestyle changes need not be reported under its policy, while advising customers to check their policy conditions; that statement should not be applied to other insurers: Aviva life insurance guidance.

When to get help comparing policies
If policy wording is complicated or you are weighing a replacement against existing cover, MoneyHelper suggests considering an independent financial adviser or specialist broker. Ask how the adviser is paid: MoneyHelper says advisers may charge a fee or receive commission from insurers. The cited guidance is UK-focused; policy terms and applicable rules can differ elsewhere.
