How Often Should You Clean a Wet Floor Cleaner’s Filter, Brush Bar, and Dock?

Clean a wet floor cleaner after every use. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank, remove hair and debris from the brush bar and its chamber, and run the machine’s clean-out cycle when one is provided. Washable filters and brush parts must dry completely before they go back into the machine; Bissell specifies 24 hours for several CrossWave models. Replacement timing is model-specific, so do not treat Bissell’s three-month advice for certain CrossWave machines as a universal rule.

The practical cleaning schedule

Wet floor cleaners leave behind dirty water, dissolved soil, hair and cleaning solution. If that residue stays in the tank, brush assembly or dock, it can create odors, restrict airflow and stop the brush from turning freely. The safest baseline is therefore an after-use routine, followed by replacement only when the model’s instructions or the part’s condition call for it.

Part or task When to do it What the manufacturer guidance establishes
Dirty-water tank Empty after every session; rinse or wash as the manual directs Bissell’s CrossWave HF3 and Edge instructions describe emptying and cleaning the tank after use and after a clean-out cycle.
Brush bar, brush roll and cover Remove hair and visible debris after every session; wash when the model permits Bissell directs users to clean removable brush components, the brush window and the brush chamber. Removal and washing steps vary by model.
Filter Inspect and clean according to the model instructions; never reinstall while damp For CrossWave Cordless Max, Bissell describes routine hand-washing and 24 hours of drying. A wet filter can reduce suction.
Dock or clean-out cycle Run after cleaning when the machine has this function; complete the manual’s follow-up steps HF3 guidance includes a powered dock cycle, brush-roll removal, wiping excess water and dirty-tank emptying.
Filter and brush-roll replacement Use the model’s parts schedule, or replace sooner if damaged or ineffective Bissell recommends three months or as needed for named CrossWave models only.

There is no evidence-based universal “once a week” or “once a month” interval for every wet floor cleaner. The machine’s exact model, washable-part design, dock cycle and operating conditions determine the details.

What to do after every cleaning session

1. Finish the clean-out cycle if your machine has one

A clean-out program flushes or rinses internal pathways, but it is not the entire maintenance routine. Follow the model’s sequence rather than assuming the dock has done everything.

For the CrossWave HF3, Bissell says to place the cleaner on its plugged-in docking station, make sure the clean tank contains formula and the dirty tank is empty, then start the clean-out cycle. When it ends, Bissell’s support wording is: Once clean out cycle is finished > Remove brush roll cover. The instructions then direct the user to pull the brush tab and remove the roll.

2. Empty and rinse the dirty-water tank

Take out the dirty tank as soon as the session ends. Pour out the contents, then rinse or wash the tank, lid and any removable components in the manner specified for that model. Leaving dirty water in place defeats the purpose of the dock cycle and allows residue to dry on internal surfaces.

Some machines use a float or screen in the tank assembly. If the manual identifies those pieces as removable or washable, clean them at the same time. Do not force a float, seal or filter out of a housing that the instructions do not identify as user-removable.

3. Remove hair and debris from the brush assembly

Inspect the brush bar, brush window and chamber after every run. Pull away hair, threads and larger debris before they wind tightly around the ends. Clean the window and chamber as the manual permits. A dirty chamber can make a clean brush look ineffective, while wrapped fibers can prevent the roll from spinning freely.

4. Wipe residual water from the machine and dock

After the cycle and part removal, wipe visible excess water from the cleaner and return it to the dock only as the model instructions show. HF3 guidance specifically calls for wiping excess water, returning the machine to the dock and emptying the dirty tank after the cycle. Do not assume that parking the machine automatically dries the brush roll, filter or tank.

5. Set washable parts aside until completely dry

Place washed filters, brush rolls, windows and other approved parts where air can reach all sides. Reassembly while damp can restrict airflow and affect suction. Keep the machine’s stated drying period with the part: Bissell specifies 24 hours for the cited Cordless Max filter, and for CrossWave Edge it says to leave parts out for 24 hours or until completely dry.

Filter care: cleaning, drying and replacement

Wash only the filter the manual identifies as washable

Filter assemblies differ. A machine may have a washable filter, a screen, a float indicator or several pieces that come out in a particular order. CrossWave Cordless Max instructions describe routine hand-washing of the filter, screen and float indicators in warm water. That direction applies to the named model, not automatically to every wet floor cleaner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the cleaning method and water temperature specified by the manual. Avoid reinstalling a filter simply because its surface looks clean; moisture trapped in the media can remain after the outside feels dry.

Allow the full drying period

For the cited Cordless Max guidance, the filter needs 24 hours to dry. CrossWave Edge instructions likewise say to leave cleaned parts out for 24 hours or until completely dry before reassembling. If the part is still cool, damp or visibly wet, extend the drying time rather than fitting it back into the cleaner.

Use suction changes as a warning

Bissell’s troubleshooting guidance says suction can be affected when the filter is not completely dry. If the cleaner suddenly has weak pickup after washing, remove the filter and verify that it is fully dry before investigating other causes. A blocked screen, incorrectly seated filter or full dirty tank can produce similar symptoms, so check each item in the order given by the manual.

Replace on the model’s schedule, not a category-wide timer

Bissell recommends replacing filters every three months or as needed for certain CrossWave models. “As needed” can mean the filter is damaged, remains ineffective after cleaning, or the machine’s performance does not recover once the tank and air path are clear. Confirm the exact model number and compatible part before ordering; CrossWave parts are not automatically interchangeable.

Brush-bar and brush-chamber maintenance

Clean after every use

Hair and debris are easiest to remove while fresh. Take out the brush roll using the model’s release tab or procedure, clear both ends, and inspect the channel where the roll sits. Clean the brush window and chamber when the instructions allow it. If the roll is washable, rinse it as directed and keep it out for the complete drying period before reinstalling.

Check that the roll spins freely

After debris removal, rotate the brush by hand if the design allows. Bissell explains that a brush roll that does not spin freely may need replacement. Do not continue operating a roll that is cracked, deformed or binding at its ends; a damaged part can continue to strain the cleaner even when the chamber is clean.

Do not confuse a clean-out cycle with brush care

The dock can rinse parts of the fluid path, but it does not necessarily remove hair from the roll or dry the brush assembly. HF3’s instructions explicitly require brush-roll removal after the cycle, illustrating why the physical inspection remains part of every-use care.

Dock and clean-out-cycle maintenance

Use the dock cycle whenever the model provides one and the manual’s tank conditions are met. On HF3, Bissell requires the machine to be on a plugged-in dock, the clean tank to contain formula and the dirty tank to be empty before starting. Other models can use different controls, tank requirements or cycle names, so copy the sequence from that model’s support material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the cycle finishes, complete the follow-up actions rather than leaving the machine untouched: remove the specified brush cover or roll, wipe excess water, return the cleaner to the dock if directed, and empty the dirty tank. Keep the dock itself free of pooled water and residue with the wiping procedure allowed by the manual.

What the named CrossWave examples show

Model example Care instructions described by Bissell Important limitation
CrossWave HF3 Use the plugged-in docking station and clean-out cycle; afterward remove the brush-roll cover and roll, wipe excess water, return the machine to the dock and empty the dirty tank. This is an HF3 sequence; controls and part-removal steps can differ on other models.
CrossWave Cordless Max Hand-wash the filter, screen and float indicators in warm water; allow 24 hours to dry. Brush-roll and brush-window cleaning are part of general maintenance. The 24-hour instruction belongs to the cited Cordless Max guidance.
CrossWave Edge Empty and rinse the dirty tank, clean the filter with warm water, wash the brush roll and window, and leave parts out for 24 hours or until completely dry. Bissell also gives a three-month-or-as-needed replacement recommendation for this named model; it is not universal.
CrossWave OmniForce Edge Use its clean-out cycle and perform routine brush maintenance. Troubleshooting notes that a wet filter can affect suction. Follow the OmniForce Edge manual for the exact cycle and replacement parts.

These examples should not be combined into one generic procedure. Before removing a component, verify the model name and read the matching manual for what is removable, washable, replaceable and compatible with its dock.

When to replace a filter or brush roll

Cleaning and replacement solve different problems. Cleaning removes accumulated soil and hair. Replacement is appropriate when a part is damaged, no longer works effectively after proper cleaning and drying, or reaches the interval stated for that model.

  • Replace a filter when it is torn, deformed, permanently clogged or still fails to restore airflow after correct cleaning and complete drying.
  • Replace a brush roll when it is damaged, its bristles or covering are deteriorated, or it does not spin freely after debris is removed.
  • Apply the three-month interval only where the specific Bissell model’s instructions state it. It is a manufacturer recommendation for certain CrossWave machines, not a standard for all wet floor cleaners.
  • Check the model number before buying a replacement filter or brush roll. A part that fits one CrossWave model may not fit another.

Troubleshooting after cleaning

The cleaner has weak suction

  1. Empty the dirty-water tank and confirm that its lid and float components are seated correctly.
  2. Remove the filter and verify that it is completely dry. Bissell identifies a wet filter as a possible cause of reduced suction.
  3. Inspect the screen, air path and brush chamber for residue or hair.
  4. Reassemble only the parts approved for that model and test again.

The brush does not turn freely

  1. Switch off the cleaner and remove the brush roll according to the manual.
  2. Clear hair and debris from both ends, the brush window and the chamber.
  3. Check for cracks, warping or binding.
  4. Replace the roll if it still does not spin freely or is visibly damaged.

The machine smells after the dock cycle

Empty the dirty tank immediately, rinse the tank and clean the removable brush components. Inspect for residue in the brush chamber and wipe excess water from the machine and dock as instructed. A completed cycle does not authorize leaving dirty water or damp parts assembled indefinitely.

A model-safe routine to keep beside the machine

  • Every session: run the supported clean-out cycle, empty the dirty tank, remove visible brush debris and wipe residual water.
  • After washing: leave filters and brush parts out for the full model-specified drying time; for the cited Bissell examples, that is 24 hours or until completely dry.
  • When performance changes: inspect the filter, screen, tank, brush roll and chamber before assuming the motor has failed.
  • When ordering parts: read the model number from the cleaner and match the replacement filter or brush roll to that exact model.
  • For replacement timing: follow the model manual and replace sooner when a part is damaged or remains ineffective after cleaning.

This routine answers the frequency question without applying one machine’s instructions to another. The after-use steps are broadly prudent, while the removable parts, drying periods, dock controls and replacement intervals must come from the exact cleaner’s documentation.
