Octopuses explore by reaching out with flexible arms and pressing their suckers against surfaces, prey and objects. The suckers do more than grip: they register mechanical contact and detect certain chemicals at the point of touch. Researchers call this combined ability chemotactile sensing, often explained for general readers as “taste by touch.”
That phrase has an important limit. An octopus is not tasting a distant object the way a human smells or tastes something from afar. Its most distinctive chemical information arrives when an arm makes contact. Local neural circuits in the arms help interpret those signals and coordinate movements, while the central nervous system integrates information across the animal.

What an octopus learns when an arm makes contact
An octopus arm is both a manipulator and a sensory probe. As the arm bends around a rock, enters a crevice or touches an unfamiliar object, its suckers supply information about pressure, texture, shape and resistance. The same contact can also reveal chemical cues on the surface.

This dual input explains why an octopus can investigate something without seeing it clearly. A sucker can report that a surface is rough or yielding while chemical receptors report that molecules associated with food, danger or another biologically relevant material are present. The resulting signal is not simply “touch” followed by a separate tasting step; mechanical and chemical information arrive through the same exploratory encounter.

The molecular basis of this ability was described by van Giesen and colleagues in Molecular Basis of Chemotactile Sensation in Octopus (Cell, 2020). Their study identified a family of cephalopod-specific chemotactile receptors in octopus arms and distinguished chemical-sensory and mechanical-sensory cell pathways. Read the 2020 study on PubMed.
How chemotactile sensing works
Suckers are sensory organs, not just suction cups
A sucker forms a close physical interface with whatever the arm is examining. Contact provides the mechanical stimulus needed for information about pressure and movement, and it brings surface chemicals close enough for chemotactile receptors to respond. This is why the suckers are central to both handling and investigation.
The 2020 receptor study reported responses to poorly soluble natural products. Poor solubility makes direct contact especially important: molecules that do not readily disperse through surrounding water are more useful as cues when an arm touches the source itself. The finding supplies a molecular explanation for the familiar observation that an octopus appears to examine an object with its suckers.
“Taste by touch” is a useful shorthand, with limits
Scientists and science communicators use “taste by touch” because it captures the combination of contact and chemical detection. It should not be read as a literal duplicate of human tongue-based taste. Human taste normally involves receptors in the mouth and is usually discussed in relation to substances dissolved in saliva. Octopus chemotactile sensing is distributed across the arms and is tied to contact with a surface.

Nor is the system equivalent to detecting every chemical plume at a distance. The evidence described here concerns contact-dependent receptors, especially those responding to poorly soluble compounds. Waterborne odor-like detection may involve other cephalopod senses, but it is not what this mechanism demonstrates.
How an octopus explores, step by step
Exploration is active: the animal changes where and how it touches the environment rather than waiting for a complete picture from vision alone. A useful sequence, grounded in the receptor and behavioral evidence, is:
- Reach into the environment. A flexible arm extends toward a crack, object, prey item or another surface. Several arms can be recruited when one arm’s information is insufficient for locating or manipulating something.
- Establish contact. Suckers attach lightly or press against the surface. Mechanical receptors begin reporting contact, resistance and movement.
- Sample chemicals locally. Chemotactile receptors examine molecules present at the contact site. Poorly soluble compounds are particularly suited to this close-range mode of detection.
- Adjust the search. Signals from the contacted area can change the arm’s path, pressure or grip. The arm may sweep across a surface, probe deeper into a gap or release an unhelpful object.
- Recruit other arms when needed. Additional arms can stabilize an object, approach it from another direction or continue searching while one arm manipulates it. A 2025 behavioral report specifically examined how octopuses use and recruit additional arms to find and manipulate visually hidden items; the available record does not establish that every arm is used equally in every context. See the behavioral study record.
- Integrate the result. Local arm processing supports rapid responses, while information is coordinated with the rest of the nervous system to produce an appropriate behavior such as grasping, rejecting, investigating or withdrawing.
This sequence is not a rigid program. An octopus can switch between visual guidance, contact sensing and manipulation as conditions change. In darkness, murky water or a confined crevice, contact information can become especially valuable because the arm can continue sampling even when the eyes have a poor view.

Visual inspection and arm exploration complement one another. An octopus may see the opening of a crevice but not what lies inside. Extending an arm allows the suckers to map the opening’s surfaces and test anything encountered beyond the line of sight. Chemical information can then help distinguish a biologically meaningful object from an inert one.

The hidden-item behavioral study is relevant because it examined finding and manipulating objects that were visually concealed. Its record supports the idea that octopuses actively recruit arms during search and handling, but it does not provide a basis for assigning a fixed order of use, a universal “preferred arm” rule or a numerical success rate. Those details depend on the exact experiment and species.
In practical terms, arm exploration combines many small decisions: where to place the next sucker, how firmly to attach, whether to continue along a surface and whether another arm should join the task. The result is a tactile-chemical examination of space, not merely a reflexive grab.
What the 2025 microbiome study adds
The newer evidence connects chemotactile receptors to cues produced by microbial communities living on natural surfaces. Sepela and colleagues reported that secreted signals from microbiomes of ecologically relevant surfaces activated chemotactile receptors and guided octopus behavior. Their abstract summarizes the result as: “Here, we report that secreted signals from microbiomes of ecologically relevant surfaces activate CRs to guide octopus behavior.” Read Environmental microbiomes drive chemotactile sensation in octopus on PubMed.
The study’s examples included microbial metabolites associated with crab prey and with octopus eggs. The reported behavioral consequences involved predation and maternal care. In other words, a surface can carry chemical information that is produced by a community of microbes, and an octopus can encounter that information through contact-sensitive receptors.

This finding should be stated narrowly. It does not show that octopuses detect every surface microbiome, that all microbial signals are attractive, or that chemotactile cues provide a general-purpose navigation map. It demonstrates receptor activation and behavior in the experimental contexts involving the reported prey- and egg-associated examples.

Arm-based sensing works because processing is distributed. Neural circuits in the arms can handle sensory input and support local motor responses, allowing an arm to react quickly to what its suckers encounter. This arrangement is useful when an arm is probing a complicated surface and cannot wait for every adjustment to be specified centrally.
“Distributed” does not mean that each arm is a completely independent animal or contains a separate brain. The arms remain part of one nervous system. Local processing and central coordination operate together: an arm can make immediate adjustments while the octopus as a whole selects and organizes behavior.

Octopus and squid: related animals, different specializations
Octopus and squid are both cephalopods, yet their bodies meet the environment in different ways. A 2023 comparative study reported sensory receptor specializations in octopus and squid and discussed how those specializations fit different sensory roles and behaviors. See the 2023 comparison in Nature.
| Comparison point | Octopus | Squid | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary appendage context | Arms with many contact-capable suckers used for probing and handling | Appendages and body plan adapted to a different way of encountering prey and surroundings | Cephalopod receptor systems can specialize in relation to how an animal interacts with its environment. |
| Receptor emphasis | Chemotactile receptors in the arms support chemical detection at contact sites alongside mechanical sensing. | The comparative study describes receptor specializations suited to squid sensory roles. | The study supports specialization, not identical appendage use. |
| Behavioral conclusion | Contact sensing helps explain probing, prey-related examination and other arm-mediated behaviors. | Squid sensory adaptations should be interpreted in the context of squid behavior. | There is no evidence here for a universal ranking of octopus versus squid intelligence or sensory ability. |
The comparison is therefore about molecular and functional specialization, not a claim that squid and octopuses use their appendages in the same way. Similar receptor themes can serve different lifestyles.
What chemical information can and cannot tell an octopus
- It can indicate a meaningful contact site. Receptors can respond to certain chemicals on or near a surface, including poorly soluble natural products.
- It can add context to touch. Mechanical information says what the surface feels like; chemical information can help identify what the surface may represent.
- It does not automatically identify an object with certainty. A receptor response is one input into behavior, not proof that the octopus has recognized every component of a surface.
- It is not evidence of universal microbiome detection. The 2025 findings concern specific experimental signals and behaviors.
- It is not the same as distant taste. The defining feature is contact-dependent sampling through the arms.
Why this sensory system matters for octopus behavior
Flexible arms let an octopus bring sensors to places the rest of its body cannot easily inspect. Because the sensors are distributed across many suckers, the animal can gather information over a broad, irregular surface while maintaining a grip. That combination is valuable for prey hidden under rocks, objects inside narrow spaces and surfaces that cannot be identified reliably by sight alone.
Chemotactile sensing also links ecology to behavior. A chemical cue is meaningful only in the setting where the octopus encounters it. A metabolite associated with crab prey may influence predation-related behavior, while a cue associated with eggs may be relevant to maternal care. The 2025 study shows how environmental chemistry can enter the animal’s decision process through direct contact.
At the same time, the system illustrates a general cephalopod principle: sensory organs evolve around the animal’s way of living. Octopus arms are repeatedly placed against the world, so receptors that combine mechanical and chemical information are especially useful there. The broader comparison with squid shows that related cephalopods can develop different sensory emphases rather than sharing one standard design.
A concise mental model
Think of an octopus arm as a flexible search instrument covered in contact sensors. The arm reaches, the suckers press and attach, mechanical receptors report the physical surface, and chemotactile receptors sample chemicals available at that same point. Local neural circuits help the arm react, while the central nervous system coordinates the animal’s larger behavior. Repeated across multiple arms, this process lets an octopus explore hidden spaces and evaluate objects without relying on vision alone.
That model captures the evidence without turning “taste by touch” into a misleading metaphor. Octopuses do not need to bring an object to a mouth in order to obtain all of its useful chemical information; they can begin evaluating it as soon as an arm makes contact.
