How NVIDIA’s Market Capitalization Is Calculated—and What $6 Trillion Means

NVIDIA’s market capitalization is its share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. On October 6, 2026, the company’s market cap was reported at $5.78 trillion, based on a share price of $239.24. A $6 trillion figure would represent the market’s point-in-time value for NVIDIA’s equity—not $6 trillion in cash, revenue, or guaranteed proceeds from selling the company.

How to calculate NVIDIA’s market capitalization

The formula is:

Market capitalization = share price × shares outstanding

For example, a share price of $239.24 multiplied by roughly 24.3 billion shares gives an approximate market capitalization of $5.81 trillion. That is only an illustration: the share count is from a different date than the price, and both inputs need to be from the same date for a precise calculation.

StockAnalysis reported NVIDIA’s market capitalization as $5.78 trillion and its share price as $239.24 on October 6, 2026. The page says its market-cap data comes from Nasdaq Data Link; current market cap updates during the trading day, while historical market cap is updated after the close. What share price would correspond to a $6 trillion market cap?

NVIDIA’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K reported 24.3 billion common shares outstanding as of February 20, 2026. Holding that rounded share count constant, the arithmetic is:

$6 trillion ÷ 24.3 billion shares ≈ $246.91 per share

That is about 3.2% above the October 6, 2026 share price of $239.24. Treat this as an illustration, not a precise current threshold: it combines a February share count with an October price. A current calculation would require price and share-count inputs from the same date, with a consistent choice of basic or diluted shares for the per-share assumption. NVIDIA fiscal 2026 Form 10-K

What a $6 trillion valuation does—and does not—measure

Market capitalization is the market value assigned to a company’s equity by its quoted share price and share count at a particular time. It is not a direct measure of the company’s cash, annual sales, or the amount a buyer would necessarily pay to acquire it. Nor does it mean every share could be sold simultaneously at the quoted price.

  • Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
  • 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads

Market capitalization and enterprise value are also different measures. StockAnalysis listed NVIDIA’s enterprise value at $5.75 trillion on October 6, 2026, alongside its $5.78 trillion market cap. Enterprise value adjusts the equity value for balance-sheet items such as debt and cash; the figures should not be treated as interchangeable. StockAnalysis: NVIDIA market cap and net worth

Market value versus reported business results

NVIDIA reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, operating income of $130.4 billion, and diluted earnings per share of $4.90 for the year ended January 25, 2026. Those are results for a completed accounting period, not a forecast and not proof on their own that a particular market capitalization is justified. Assessing whether a valuation is reasonable requires assumptions about future growth, margins, risk, competition, capital needs, and what investors are willing to pay. NVIDIA fiscal 2026 Form 10-K

Why NVIDIA’s market cap changes

The share price moves as investors trade the stock, so market capitalization changes with it. The share count can also change through repurchases and other share issuance or withholding. This is why a market-cap figure should always carry a date, and why a price threshold derived from a share count should identify the share-count date.

Repurchases affect the share count only when executed

In its fiscal 2027 second-quarter Form 10-Q, NVIDIA reported repurchasing 94 million shares for $19.7 billion during the quarter and 203 million shares for $39.8 billion in the first half. As of July 26, 2026, the company was authorized, subject to specifications, to repurchase up to $99.3 billion of its common stock. NVIDIA fiscal 2027 second-quarter Form 10-Q

On September 28, 2026, NVIDIA announced an additional $150 billion repurchase authorization, bringing the remaining authorized amount to $235 billion, with expected execution through fiscal 2028. Authorization is permission to buy shares, not evidence that all those shares have already been purchased. Actual share-count effects depend on completed purchases and on other share issuance or withholding. NVIDIA repurchase authorization announcement

How to read a $6 trillion headline

  • Check the date: market cap and share price can change during trading.
  • Check the share-count basis: use shares outstanding from the same date as the share price for a precise calculation.
  • Separate equity value from operating results: market cap is not revenue, operating income, or enterprise value.
  • Do not treat a buyback authorization as a completed buyback: only executed repurchases change the share count.

A $6 trillion market cap would therefore mean that the relevant NVIDIA share price, multiplied by the relevant share count, equals $6 trillion. The number is a market valuation at a moment in time, not a cash reserve or a guarantee about future performance.
