The Sony WH-1000XM5 uses microphones and audio processing to create sound that opposes some of the noise around you. This active noise cancelling (ANC) reduces certain sounds—especially steady, low-frequency rumble—but does not make the world silent.
How the WH-1000XM5 reduces outside noise
Sony describes the basic process as generating “antiphase sound” against surrounding noise. In plain terms, the headphones pick up ambient sound with microphones, process that signal, and play sound intended to oppose some of it. Where the outside sound and the headphones’ output meet, the noise can be reduced for the wearer.

Which microphones and processors are involved?
Sony specifies four microphones on each earcup, for eight across the headset. Its product description says the HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1 and Integrated Processor V1 work together to control those microphones, while Multi Noise Sensor technology captures ambient sound for reduction, including higher-frequency sound. Sony’s Help Guide distinguishes internal noise-canceling microphones, which pick up noise while ANC is operating, from external microphones, which capture ambient sound and also serve voice-related functions. Why noise cancelling works better for some sounds
Sony says ANC works primarily on low-frequency sound, such as vehicle noise and air conditioning, and does not completely cancel noise. You may notice less reduction with irregular sounds such as nearby speech, and the effect can be less apparent in an already quiet setting. Fit matters because the headphones need to sit correctly around your ears. Sony warns that wearing them in a way that compromises the fit can reduce noise-canceling performance. Covering the microphones can also interfere with ANC or cause feedback, so avoid pressing or obstructing the microphone openings.

Auto NC Optimizer adjusts noise-canceling performance according to wearing conditions and environmental factors. Sony specifically mentions atmospheric pressure as one of those factors. As a result, the perceived effect can change when the headphones’ fit or surroundings change; that fluctuation is part of automatic optimization, not evidence that the headset has stopped working. How to switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound
Press the NC/AMB button to switch between Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound Mode. Sony also says the settings can be changed in its companion app. The app was renamed Sony | Sound Connect in October 2024; older WH-1000XM5 documentation may call it Sony Headphones Connect. Sony’s cited descriptions explain the headphones’ microphone-and-processor system, but they do not provide an independently validated decibel-reduction figure. A precise amount of noise removed would depend on the sound, fit, and conditions; there is no single verified attenuation number in these specifications that can be applied to every situation.
