Use an NJ TRANSIT timetable to plan a trip, then use DepartureVision, the NJ TRANSIT app, and current alerts to see what is happening to that specific train. The timetable is the planned route and time information for a weekday or weekend. DepartureVision is a live, station-based departure board with listed tracks and train estimates. System Status and My Transit Alerts add broader or personalized disruption information, while Arrival Alerts can notify you as your train nears and reaches your destination.
No NJ TRANSIT page reviewed promises a fixed update interval or perfect accuracy for estimated arrivals. Treat live times and tracks as the latest information available, not as a guarantee, and check again before leaving and during the journey.

What each NJ TRANSIT information source is for
NJ TRANSIT separates planned schedules from changing, real-time conditions. Starting with the right tool prevents common mistakes such as using a timetable as proof that a train is currently on time or reading a systemwide advisory as if it applied to every departure.
| Tool | Scope | Information provided | How you receive it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schedules and fares timetable | Planned station-to-station trip for the current weekday or weekend | Route and scheduled times, with itinerary planning | NJ TRANSIT website or app |
| DepartureVision (MyTrain) | One station’s current departure board | Listed arrival and departure times, track assignments, and a selected train’s stops and estimates | Web-enabled phone, tablet, or desktop |
| System Status | Network-wide operating conditions | Broad service status and agency advisories | NJ TRANSIT app and service-information pages |
| My Transit Alerts | Trips or lines you select | Personalized notifications about delays, schedule changes, station advisories, and service adjustments | App notifications, with text and email options documented by NJ TRANSIT |
| Arrival Alerts | Your selected destination on a trip | A notice when the train is within one-quarter mile of the destination and another when it arrives | NJ TRANSIT app notifications |
How to plan an NJ TRANSIT train trip
- Identify the origin, destination, and day type. Start with the station where you will board, the station where you will leave the train, and whether the trip is on the current weekday or weekend. NJ TRANSIT publishes station-to-station schedules for those day types. Rail and light-rail schedules are available through the schedules and fares area.
- Open the timetable or trip planner. The website and app can display schedules and plan an itinerary without requiring you to sign in. Enter the stations and choose a departure or arrival preference if the planner offers one. Use the resulting schedule as the planned baseline for your trip.
- Check the departure station in DepartureVision. Near travel time, open the station’s departure screen and look for the train you intend to board. Compare the listed departure and track with the timetable. If the train is listed, select it to inspect the stations it serves and any available estimated times.
- Read current service information. Check System Status for conditions affecting the network or a line. If you have configured My Transit Alerts, review notifications for your selected trip or line; these may identify delays, schedule changes, station advisories, or service adjustments that a static timetable cannot show.
- Recheck after reaching the station. Track assignments and estimates can change. Look at the station display or DepartureVision again before boarding, and continue monitoring the app or alerts if your journey includes a transfer.
How to read an NJ TRANSIT timetable
Weekday and weekend schedules are different planning documents
NJ TRANSIT’s schedule selector distinguishes the current weekday from the weekend. Do not assume a departure shown for a weekday operates at the same time, or at all, on a Saturday or Sunday. Select the day type that matches the date of travel before relying on a listed time.

Station-to-station information gives you the planned sequence
A station-to-station timetable establishes the route between your boarding and destination stations and the scheduled times for that trip. It is useful for deciding which departure fits your plans and for estimating when you should arrive at the station. The itinerary planner can combine the schedule information into a trip plan across NJ TRANSIT bus, rail, and light rail.
A schedule is not a live operating record
The timetable describes what is planned. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a train has departed, whether its track changed, or how late it is running today. Use DepartureVision and current alerts for those questions.
Using DepartureVision for the latest station information
NJ TRANSIT describes DepartureVision, also called MyTrain, as a way to view train departure screens on a web-enabled mobile device or desktop computer. The screen includes listed arrival and departure times and track assignments. This makes it a station view rather than a replacement for the station-to-station timetable.

Check a station’s board
- Open DepartureVision and choose the station where you plan to board.
- Find the train or departure that matches your timetable plan.
- Compare its listed time and track with the information you wrote down or saved from the schedule.
- Keep the board open if you are waiting, because the displayed estimate or track may change.
Open the individual train
Selecting a train can show the stations it serves. NJ TRANSIT’s commuter guidance also describes stop-by-stop estimated arrivals and track information. This view is useful when you are deciding whether a train serves your destination, checking intermediate stops, or judging progress after boarding.

DepartureVision is still an estimate and information display. NJ TRANSIT does not publish a universal latency figure or an accuracy guarantee for every estimated arrival, so do not interpret a displayed time as a promise that the train will reach a station at that exact minute.
What the NJ TRANSIT app can do
The app FAQ says the NJ TRANSIT app can plan trips across bus, rail, and light rail; purchase and activate tickets; check real-time arrivals and departures; and manage travel in one place. For schedule viewing and trip planning, sign-in is not required.
Features available without signing in
- View schedules for a planned trip.
- Use itinerary planning across NJ TRANSIT modes.
- Check current arrivals and departures.
- Review service information presented in the app.
When an account is required
NJ TRANSIT requires an account for ticket purchasing, ticket storage, and ticket management. You can therefore plan a trip first without creating an account, but you will need to sign in when you want to buy or manage mobile tickets.
Where to look in the app
Use the schedule or trip-planning function for the planned itinerary, the real-time arrivals and departures view for current station information, System Status for broad conditions, and My Transit Alerts for notifications attached to trips or lines you select. Menu labels can change as the app is updated, so look for those feature names rather than assuming that a timetable screen is live.

My Transit Alerts and System Status are not the same
The app’s two status features answer different questions.
| If you need to know… | Use… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a broad disruption affecting the network or service area? | System Status | It presents overall service conditions and agency advisories. |
| What is happening to a trip or line I selected? | My Transit Alerts | It sends personalized notifications for the trips or lines you follow. |
| What is the latest listed departure and track at one station? | DepartureVision | It is organized around the station’s departure screen. |
NJ TRANSIT documents My Transit Alerts through the app and also describes text and email delivery options. Configure the trips or lines that matter to you instead of assuming that a systemwide notice will include every station-specific change.
Arrival Alerts provide two destination notifications
Arrival Alerts are a convenience feature separate from the timetable and departure board. The app FAQ says riders can receive two notifications for a trip:
- One when the train approaches within one-quarter mile of the destination.
- Another when the train arrives at the destination.
These notices can help when you are monitoring a long ride or a stop where you do not want to miss your exit. They do not replace checking the route, the current service status, or the train’s listed stops.

How to handle delays, schedule changes, and track changes
Before leaving home
- Open the correct weekday or weekend timetable and note the planned departure.
- Check DepartureVision for the departure station’s latest listed time and track.
- Review System Status for network-level conditions.
- Read any My Transit Alert attached to your trip or line.
At the station
- Compare the station board or DepartureVision with the track information you saw earlier.
- Allow for the possibility that an estimate or track assignment has changed since you left home.
- If a train is missing, delayed, or shown with a different destination, check the individual train details and current advisories before boarding.
During the ride
Use the selected train’s stop-by-stop view, when available, to follow estimated arrivals. Keep Arrival Alerts enabled if you want the quarter-mile and arrival notifications. For a transfer, check the next station’s departures rather than relying on the original timetable alone.
Delay-alert timing is not one universal number
NJ TRANSIT’s official information pages describe delay alerts differently. The Stay Connected page identifies delays of 15 minutes or more as an alert category, while a separate commuter page describes a different delay time window. Because those pages do not match, do not treat one threshold as a universal rule for every alert configuration. Check the current alert settings and the live service information for the trip you are following.
This distinction matters when a train is running a few minutes late: an absence of a notification does not prove that the train is on time, and receiving an advisory does not establish the exact arrival time. DepartureVision, station displays, and the app’s current information are the appropriate places to verify the specific train.

NJ TRANSIT provides live-oriented displays and alerts, but the reviewed agency material does not publish a systemwide feed-latency specification, an accuracy guarantee for estimated arrivals, or a fixed schedule-revision protocol. There is no supported basis for saying that every estimate refreshes at a particular number of seconds or that a displayed track can never change.
Best Value
Use the information in layers: the timetable supplies the plan, DepartureVision supplies the latest station view, and alerts explain known disruptions. If the sources disagree, favor the newest station-specific information and read the associated advisory before making a boarding or transfer decision.
Common problems and practical fixes
The timetable shows a train that is not on the departure board
Confirm that you selected the correct weekday or weekend schedule and the correct origin station. Then check System Status and any trip-specific alert. A planned departure can be changed or canceled by a service adjustment, so the timetable alone cannot confirm that it is operating now.
The track in the app differs from the station announcement
Recheck the station’s current DepartureVision screen and listen for the latest station announcement. Track assignments are operational information and may change after the original schedule was published. Use the most recent station-specific notice available.
An estimated arrival has not appeared
Do not infer a precise update interval from the absence of an estimate. Confirm that you selected the intended train, review its listed stops, and check the broader status and alerts. If the service is disrupted, continue checking the station display or staff instructions.
You want alerts but do not want to buy a ticket
Schedule planning and viewing do not require sign-in. Ticket purchasing, storage, and management do require an account. You can therefore use planning and service-information features without creating a ticket account, then sign in only if you decide to manage mobile tickets.
A simple decision guide
- Planning several hours or days ahead: use the station-to-station weekday or weekend timetable and itinerary planner.
- Leaving soon: check DepartureVision for the departure station’s listed time and track.
- Wondering about a network disruption: open System Status.
- Following a particular line or trip: configure My Transit Alerts and review the notifications you receive.
- Watching for your stop while riding: open the selected train’s stop details and enable Arrival Alerts.
- Making a time-sensitive transfer: verify the next departure again after you arrive; do not rely only on the original timetable.
The most reliable way to use NJ TRANSIT information
Think of NJ TRANSIT information as a progression from plan to current operation. Choose the correct day and stations in the timetable, verify the station’s live departure screen, read systemwide and trip-specific advisories, and continue checking after boarding. This approach uses each source for the job it is designed to do without treating a schedule as a guarantee or an estimate as an exact measurement.
