How Nintendo Switch eShop Discounts and Game Sales Work

Nintendo Switch eShop discounts are temporary store promotions: the reduced price appears on an eligible game or downloadable-content page in your regional eShop or Nintendo Store. They are separate from My Nintendo Gold Points, Nintendo eShop card funds, and purchase-linked promotional download codes. Check the price and sale end date in your own storefront before buying, because availability, currency, terms, and timing vary by region.

What a Switch eShop sale actually is

A sale changes the listed price of a specific digital game or DLC for a stated promotional period. Nintendo says discounts and sales are often available through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store, but it does not mean every title is discounted or that a sale runs in every country at the same time.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The price shown after you select a title is the practical source of truth for your account. Open the game’s page, confirm the currency, review the displayed end date or time, and make sure the account and storefront are set to the region where you intend to play and pay. A promotion can end while you are deciding, and a title discounted in one country may remain at its regular price elsewhere.

Nintendo’s support material distinguishes these sale prices from coupon or discount codes. Its current guidance says there are no discount codes available to apply to Nintendo Store purchases. Therefore, do not expect a general code field to reduce any game you choose. A lower price printed on a game page is a store promotion, not proof that a universal coupon exists.

#1 Best Overall

The four ways your final cost can change

Mechanism What it changes Important limits
Sale price The title’s listed price is temporarily reduced. Title, region, currency and end date are specific to the storefront; not every game is included.
My Nintendo Gold Points Previously earned points can cover part of an eligible digital purchase, with the remainder paid from funds or another supported method. Points must be valid, the product must qualify, and the purchase must use the same currency as the country where the points were earned.
Nintendo eShop Card Adds account balance that can be used to pay for a purchase. An eShop card is funding, not a discount. The cited guidance does not say it lowers a game’s price.
Purchase-linked promotional download code Provides a specified download benefit after a qualifying purchase. It is tied to the qualifying transaction, not a universal code for any game. Check the purchase history and receipt for the account that bought it.

Do not assume that two benefits combine. For example, a sale may be available while an eligible Gold Point balance can also be applied, but Nintendo’s regional terms determine whether that combination works for the particular product and transaction. Compare the final checkout total, not just a headline percentage or the amount of account credit you have.

Can you still earn Nintendo Gold Points?

No. Nintendo announced that, beginning at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025, users would no longer earn My Nintendo Gold Points on digital purchases. Gold Points also stopped being awarded for physical games released after that date. Older pages that describe a five-percent earning rate explain the former program and must not be treated as a current benefit.

Previously earned points did not disappear immediately. Nintendo’s notice says they remain valid for 12 months after issuance, subject to the program’s terms. Check the expiration date shown for your balance before planning a purchase; a point balance can include points with different issuance dates and therefore different expiry dates.

Can existing Gold Points be used on a sale game?

Potentially, if the game or DLC is an eligible digital product and your points are still valid. Nintendo says redemption value depends on the currency in which the points were earned, and points can be used only in countries that use that same currency. A balance earned in one currency cannot simply be moved to an unrelated regional storefront.

How the checkout works

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account that owns the points and open the game or DLC in the correct regional eShop or Nintendo Store.
  2. Confirm that the item is digital and eligible for Gold Point redemption. Physical products and excluded items may not qualify.
  3. At checkout, select the option to redeem available Gold Points and review the monetary value applied in that currency.
  4. Pay any remaining amount with available Nintendo Account funds or another supported payment method.
  5. Before confirming, inspect the final total, the points used, and any expiration or regional terms shown by Nintendo.

A sale changes the item’s price; points are then a payment credit applied under the program rules. The checkout screen, rather than an assumption that all discounts stack, determines the amount due.

  • The perfect gift for anyone who loves to play—including you. Choose from over 1,000 new, classic and indie games – delivered directly to your Nintendo Switch, Wii U or Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
  • Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.

Do Nintendo eShop Cards give you a discount?

No. An eShop Card adds funds to an account. Nintendo lists cards among its payment and funding methods, but the cited purchase guidance does not describe them as price-reduction coupons.

A card can still be useful when you want to lock in a budget, do not use a bank card online, or need to add funds before a sale ends. Treat the card’s face value as money available to spend, not as savings. The game’s sale price remains the price set by the storefront, and any unused balance stays subject to Nintendo Account rules.

Before buying a card

  • Confirm that the card’s currency and region match the Nintendo Account storefront where you will redeem it.
  • Check the amount you need after accounting for any valid Gold Points.
  • Use an authorized seller and retain the receipt or activation information until the balance appears.
  • Do not buy a card expecting a discount unless the specific seller or promotion clearly states one; Nintendo’s general card guidance does not.

Where to find a purchase-linked promotional code

Some Nintendo eShop purchases include a promotional download code connected to that transaction. This is different from a coupon that can be entered against any game.

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account used for the qualifying purchase.
  2. Open the account’s purchase history and locate the transaction. Nintendo’s support instructions say account activity history can reach back two years.
  3. Check the receipt email sent for that purchase; the code or redemption instructions may appear there.
  4. Read the promotion’s product, region, expiry and redemption conditions before using the code.

If the code is missing, first verify that you are viewing the account that paid for the order and search the email address associated with that account. A code’s existence does not establish that a similar code is available for every title.

How to check whether a game is genuinely on sale

  1. Open Nintendo eShop on your Switch or the Nintendo Store page for your region.
  2. Search for the exact edition you want. Standard, deluxe, bundle and DLC listings can have different prices and eligibility.
  3. Compare the current price with the regular price displayed on the same listing, where Nintendo provides both.
  4. Read the sale end date and time, including the stated time zone if shown.
  5. Confirm the currency, tax treatment shown at checkout, required storage and whether the purchase is for the correct Nintendo Account.
  6. Proceed to checkout only after the final total reflects any valid points or account funds you intend to use.

Prices and end dates change frequently. A deal page, social post or old screenshot is not a substitute for the live listing in your storefront.

Regional availability, payment and refund cautions

Nintendo’s cited direct-purchase FAQ for the Americas lists Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and the United States as supported countries for Nintendo.com digital purchases. It requires a Nintendo Account and says the account must previously have accessed eShop on a Switch 2 or Switch system. These conditions are specific to that Americas FAQ and should not be generalized to Europe, Asia, Oceania or other markets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same Americas FAQ states that digital sales are final, with a limited preorder exception: a preorder can be canceled before payment is processed, up to seven days before the game’s release. Local rules may differ, so review the terms displayed for your country before confirming a purchase. A mistaken edition, an expired sale or an unwanted game is not automatically refundable simply because you changed your mind.

Why region matters

  • Prices are set in local currencies and may differ substantially between storefronts.
  • Gold Point redemption is limited to countries using the currency in which the points were earned.
  • Game availability, DLC compatibility, age ratings and promotional terms can vary by country.
  • Payment methods and cancellation rights are governed by the regional Nintendo terms attached to the transaction.

A practical decision framework before you buy

Buy during the sale when

  • The live regional listing shows a lower price that fits your budget.
  • You have checked the sale end date and are comfortable with Nintendo’s final-sale terms.
  • The edition, language, DLC and account are correct.
  • Any Gold Points you plan to use are valid and currency-compatible.

Wait or investigate when

  • The price appears only in a third-party post and not in your own eShop.
  • You are relying on an old page that promises Gold Points on a new purchase.
  • You are unsure whether a card is region-compatible or whether a promotional code applies to your transaction.
  • You need a refund guarantee that the applicable regional terms do not provide.

The most reliable comparison is the final regional checkout price after eligible points are applied, alongside the product and refund conditions. Do not compare a sale price in one currency with an unconverted price in another and call the difference a guaranteed saving.

Common mistakes and fixes

“I expected new Gold Points from this purchase.”

New points stopped being awarded at 9:30 p.m. PDT on March 24, 2025. Treat any older five-percent description as historical and check whether your existing points remain within their 12-month validity period.

“My points are visible but cannot be applied.”

Check the product’s eligibility, the points’ expiry dates, the Nintendo Account used at checkout and whether the purchase currency matches the currency in which the points were earned.

$70 Nintendo eShop Gift Card [Digital Code]
  • This item can be redeemed on eShop only. This item cannot be redeemed on the Wii Shop

“My eShop card did not lower the price.”

That is expected: the card adds funds. Verify that the balance was redeemed to the correct regional account, then use the account balance as a payment method.

“I cannot find the promotional download code.”

Review the purchase history for the paying account and the receipt email. Nintendo says account activity history can extend two years. If the qualifying conditions were not met, no code may have been issued.

“The sale price disappeared.”

Reopen the live regional listing and check the end date and time. Sales are temporary and may not be synchronized across countries.

What to remember

  • A sale is a temporary price set by Nintendo for particular titles and regions.
  • Existing Gold Points are a separate payment credit; new points are no longer earned after March 24, 2025, and older points generally remain valid for 12 months after issuance under Nintendo’s notice.
  • An eShop Card funds an account but is not itself a discount.
  • A promotional download code, when offered, is linked to a qualifying purchase and appears in the purchasing account’s history or receipt.
  • Always verify the live regional price, currency, end date, eligibility and refund terms before confirming payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Gold Points and a sale price together?

It may be possible for an eligible digital product, but Nintendo’s regional product and transaction terms control whether both apply. Confirm the final checkout total rather than assuming every offer combines.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are Nintendo eShop sales available in every country?

No. Nintendo says sales are often available, but titles, prices, currencies and end dates vary by regional storefront.

How long do old Gold Points last?

Nintendo’s February 2025 notice says previously earned points remain valid for 12 months after issuance, subject to the program terms.

Can I cancel a digital game purchase?

Nintendo’s cited Americas FAQ says sales are final, with a limited preorder cancellation exception before payment processing and up to seven days before release. Check the terms for your own region.
