IR and ordinary Non-Roster status mainly create roster-count relief. Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) is different: when its requirements are met, it can raise a team’s spending limit, but the amount depends on the team’s cap position and the timing of the move—not simply on the injured player’s full cap hit.
IR, LTIR and Non-Roster at a glance
The key question is whether a designation changes the active-roster count, the club’s salary calculations, or its spending limit. Those are separate effects.

| Injured Reserve (IR) | For an injury, illness or disability. The 2013 NHL–NHLPA CBA text specifies that a player cannot compete in NHL games for at least seven days from the relevant event; confirm the procedure in the agreement currently in force. | Removes the player from the active roster count. | IR alone does not provide cap relief or raise the spending limit. |
| Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) | The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes a player as unavailable for at least 10 games and 24 days and says the player must also be on IR. | Allows the club to manage the roster while the player is unavailable. | Can raise the club’s spending limit. The allowance depends on payroll, available cap space when the player is placed on LTIR and other accounting details; it is not automatically equal to the player’s full cap hit. |
| Non-Roster | A Commissioner-approved designation for a player unavailable for a reason other than injury, illness or disability. The prior CBA’s Article 16.12 gives examples such as a birth or funeral. | The player does not count against the Active Roster limit, and the club may use a replacement. | The prior CBA provision includes both the designated player’s and the replacement’s Player Salary and Bonuses in Actual Club Salary and Averaged Club Salary calculations. It is roster relief, not salary exclusion. |
| Injured Non-Roster | A distinct status for an injured player; the prior CBA text requires physician verification. | Separate from ordinary Non-Roster status. | Do not assume it removes all salary from cap calculations. Check the applicable current CBA language for the specific treatment. |
The NHL’s replacement four-year CBA took effect on September 16, 2026, and runs through September 15, 2030. Some detailed rules summarized above come from the prior CBA or a team explainer rather than a complete review of the new agreement’s operative text. For a transaction or cap calculation under the current CBA, verify the exact current language rather than treating an older article’s thresholds or wording as definitive.

IR is primarily a roster mechanism. It frees an active-roster place while a player is unavailable, but placing a player on IR does not itself create additional salary-cap room. A club may have space for a replacement because of its existing cap position or other roster moves; that is different from IR removing the injured player’s salary from the calculation.
#1 Best Overall
The 2013 NHL–NHLPA CBA says a player on IR may not play in NHL games for at least seven days from the date of the injury, illness or disability, with activation possible beginning on day eight after medical clearance and submission of the required notice. Because a replacement agreement took effect in September 2026, consult its current procedure before relying on that older CBA timing for a transaction.
Why LTIR is not the same as getting a player’s full cap hit back
LTIR can let a club spend above its ordinary limit when an eligible player is unavailable, but it is not a one-for-one cap-credit system. How much room the club can use depends in part on the club’s payroll and remaining cap space when the player is placed on LTIR, along with applicable accounting rules. A club’s available room therefore cannot be calculated from the injured player’s cap hit alone.

- NHL 97 took the graphics even further ahead, using a full 3D engine, with motion captured polygonal players. Each goaltender has his own custom-painted mask and the original artwork can be seen inside the game with a special "Goalie Mask Viewer". NHL 97 also introduces play-by-play commentary, provided by well-known announcer Jim Hughson. For the first time since EA Hockey, national teams were added, but only Canada, the United States, and Russia have their own teams while the other two are selections of the best European players. Along with the PC, Mega Drive/Genesis and SNES versions, both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation version made their debut, although they were rushed and buggy. For instance, the shot speed in the Playstation and Saturn versions was so slow that some skaters could beat a slapshot down the ice. The cover of the game features Florida Panthers goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck.
The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes LTIR eligibility as requiring the player to be unavailable for at least 10 games and 24 days and to be placed on IR. The accessible explanation does not establish the complete calculation formula under the CBA that took effect in 2026. Treat that threshold as the team primer’s guidance, not a substitute for checking the operative agreement and league rules for a current case.
What Non-Roster status means for the player and replacement
Ordinary Non-Roster status covers an approved absence for a reason other than injury, illness or disability. Under Article 16.12 of the prior CBA, the designated player comes off the Active Roster limit and the club may use a replacement, but both players’ salaries and bonuses remain in the club salary calculations named in that provision. The designation changes who counts toward the roster limit; it does not make either salary disappear.

- Used Book in Good Condition
Injured Non-Roster is a different category, not another name for ordinary Non-Roster. The prior CBA requires physician verification for that status. Because the salary treatment must be determined from the applicable CBA language, do not infer that this label automatically excludes a player’s compensation from the cap.

The old shorthand that “there is no playoff salary cap” is no longer accurate for the rules described by the NHL’s 2025 implementation report and the Sabres’ explanation of the replacement CBA. The playoff calculation applies to the 20 players dressing for a game: 18 skaters and two goalies. That is a game-lineup calculation, not a statement that a team’s entire playoff roster consists of only those 20 players.

The NHL reported that the upper limit rose from $88 million to $95.5 million for the 2025–26 season. That $95.5 million figure is specific to 2025–26; it is not a current-season figure by implication and should not be carried forward as the 2026–27 limit.

How to assess a roster move
- Identify the exact designation. Distinguish IR from LTIR, ordinary Non-Roster from Injured Non-Roster, and a roster transaction from a change to salary calculations.
- Check the player’s eligibility and documentation. Confirm the applicable current CBA requirements, medical clearance or verification, and any required notice or approval.
- Separate roster room from cap room. Ask whether the player stops counting toward the active-roster limit, whether his salary stays in club calculations, and whether the club’s spending limit changes. These answers can differ.
- For LTIR, check the club’s cap position and timing. The player’s cap hit alone does not establish the usable allowance; placement timing and the club’s payroll and cap space matter.
- For playoff questions, identify the game lineup and season. Apply the rule to the 20 dressed players described in the implementation materials, and use the upper limit for the season in question rather than a prior season’s number.
Where fans can check cap information
The NHL/SAP cap projector described by the league is a Front Office app tool for approved NHL front-office users. Its existence does not establish that the league offers a public consumer cap calculator. For a specific current transaction, the operative CBA and official team or league transaction information are more useful than treating a public-facing roster label as a complete cap explanation.
