How NHL Goaltenders Adjust to a New Team and Defensive System

A goalie joining a new NHL team must learn both its defensive structure and the habits of the skaters who execute it. The system can be understood relatively quickly; building reliable reads with new defensemen takes repeated practice and games. NHL reporting says some goalies may need up to half a season to feel fully comfortable with teammates’ tendencies, but that is an interview-based estimate—not a league-wide timetable.

What a goalie has to learn

The system and the players are separate lessons

A coach can explain where defenders should be, but a goalie also needs to learn what they actually do under pressure. Linus Ullmark described the distinction as learning the in-zone system while reading individual tendencies off the rush. In practical terms, a goalie needs to know whether a defenseman attacks early or holds a gap, relies on a stick or blocks shots, and what that player does with a puck rimmed around the boards—control it, make a play, or chip it out. Those choices change what the goalie should expect next. NHL.com’s 2025 report includes Ullmark’s account and notes that familiarity with teammates’ habits can take longer than learning the structure itself.

Repeated reads create coordination

Joonas Korpisalo likewise described learning whether teammates block shots, use their sticks, or go down to block. The goalie must anticipate how the defense will handle a developing play and coordinate with it, rather than react as if every skater behaves the same way. Former NHL goalie coach Jim Corsi made the broader point that goaltending skills need to work in concert with team defense and that synchronicity with new defensemen takes time. His is a coaching explanation, not a measured estimate of how long adjustment takes. Corsi’s NHL Coaches Room analysis discusses that coordination.

How the defensive style affects a goalie’s game

Rushes and end-zone possessions ask for different reads

A goalie and team need to account for the kinds of chances the defense tends to concede. Rush attacks can reward a goalie comfortable with backward movement and flow; sustained end-zone possessions may suit a more passive, inside-out approach. The goalie’s depth and willingness to challenge may also need to change if the new team defends odd-man rushes differently.

James Reimer described adapting his depth after moving from Toronto to San Jose: “I played a touch deeper [in San Jose]. In Toronto, I challenged hard but the way they played odd-man rushes and stuff was different in San Jose, so you had to stay a little deeper.” That is an example of one goalie adjusting to one team’s approach, not a universal instruction. NHL.com’s 2018 reporting on goalie fit gives the context for Reimer’s move.

Workload and start frequency matter

Fewer shots do not necessarily make a transition easier. A goalie whose game depends on movement, rhythm, and timing may prefer regular starts and a busier workload; in a quieter game, the challenge can be staying engaged for infrequent but dangerous chances. This is a style-dependent consideration, not a rule that more shots are always better.

Before a move, the useful questions are whether the team commonly allows rush chances or extended zone time, how its defensemen manage those situations, and whether the goalie is likely to receive the starts and workload that suit his approach. These are factors to investigate, not a scoring formula or guarantee of fit.

Why timing changes the adjustment

An early move leaves more room to settle in

A move earlier in a season or during the offseason can give a goalie more practice and game time to learn the defensive structure and teammates’ habits. Prior experience switching teams may help a goalie know what to ask and what to expect, but it does not eliminate the need to develop new reads.

A deadline trade compresses the learning window

NHL.com’s 2025 deadline-trade reporting describes roughly 20 games remaining for most teams after the deadline and says a traded goalie may be unlikely to start more than 15. Those figures illustrate the limited opportunity to settle in; they are not a guarantee of a particular player’s schedule. Practice time can also be scarce, while the games may carry immediate playoff implications. The NHL.com report on deadline trades discusses that compressed window.

Ryan Miller contrasted the feel of joining a team at training camp with arriving at the deadline: a long season allows room for mistakes, while a deadline move can bring pressure to fit in and perform immediately. That is Miller’s reflection on his experience, not a league-wide rule. NHL.com’s 2017 report covers his comments and the pressures goalies can face in a trade.

How teams can support the transition

Use video to make preparation specific

Video and team-specific chance information can help coaches focus practice on situations the goalie is likely to face. A 2026 Chicago Sun-Times report described the Blackhawks identifying lateral movement and saves after east-west passes as training priorities, then having goalie staff check analytics against video before sharing the findings with goalies. It is an example of one club’s process, not evidence that every NHL team uses the same approach or priorities. The Chicago Sun-Times report describes the Blackhawks’ work.

Look for fit without treating it as a guarantee

“It’s the same game, they just play a different style,” Mackenzie Blackwood told NHL.com about adjusting to a new team. A predictable defensive group and clear communication can help a goalie settle into that style, but system fit alone cannot establish how well he will perform. Health, role, schedule, the quality of team defense, and the small samples common after a trade can all affect results; available reporting does not isolate the system’s causal effect.

For example, NHL.com reported that Korpisalo went 7-3-1 with a .921 save percentage after his 2023 move, compared with 11-11-3 and a .913 save percentage before it. Those are player-specific splits, not proof that the trade or defensive system caused the difference. Likewise, Reimer’s 6-2-0 record, three shutouts, and .938 save percentage in eight San Jose starts are a short sample, not a general forecast. NHL.com’s 2025 article reports the Korpisalo example, and its 2018 fit report covers Reimer’s starts.
