How NHL Goalie Saves, Save Percentage, and Shutouts Are Calculated

In NHL statistics, save percentage (SV%) is saves divided by shots faced. A save is credited when a goalie stops a shot on goal; shots on goal are attempts that enter the net or would have done so without the stop. If two goalies combine for a shutout, neither gets an individual shutout: the NHL records a Club shutout.

What counts as a goalie save?

A save is tied to a shot on goal: an attacking player’s shot, tip, or deflection that enters the net or would have entered had the goalie not stopped it. The NHL reports shots against and saves as separate goalie statistics, so the save count reflects stopped shots on goal rather than every attempt directed toward the net. The NHL glossary defines shots on goal and saves; the NHL goalie statistics table shows shots against and saves as distinct fields.

How do you calculate save percentage?

SV% = saves ÷ shots faced. For example, if a goalie makes 27 saves on 30 shots faced, the calculation is 27 ÷ 30 = 0.900, or .900 when displayed as a save percentage. The NHL glossary states that save percentage is determined by dividing saves by shots faced, and the official goalie table presents shots against, saves, and SV% together. In this example, the three shots not stopped account for the difference between shots faced and saves. SV% expresses the share of shots faced that the goalie stopped; it is not a goals-per-game or playing-time measure.

How is SV% different from goals-against average?

SV% and goals-against average (GAA) describe different things. SV% compares stopped shots with shots faced. GAA measures goals allowed per 60 minutes. A goalie can therefore have distinct values for these measures because one is a shot-based ratio and the other relates goals allowed to playing time. An NHL goalie-metrics explainer discusses the difference.

Can two NHL goalies share a shutout?

When two goaltenders combine for a shutout, neither receives individual credit for the shutout. The NHL records it as a Club shutout, according to the league glossary. NHL glossary: Shutout

What do goalie statistics tell you—and what do they leave out?

An NHL goalie line can include shots against, saves, SV%, GAA, time on ice, and shutouts. These are separate fields, not interchangeable measures. SV% tells you the fraction of shots faced that were stopped; GAA puts goals allowed in relation to playing time; a shutout is a separate outcome recorded under NHL scoring rules. The NHL goalie statistics interface displays these kinds of fields.

None of those figures alone describes the difficulty or circumstances of the chances a goalie faced. Publicly available common measures provide only a limited view of goaltending, as an NHL goalie-analysis article notes. NHL statistics tools can be used for historical, single-season, multi-season, and game-by-game queries, depending on when a statistic became official; the league described those capabilities in a 2019 overview of its statistics interface.
