NFL teams do not decide an edge rusher’s return from the calendar alone. They combine injury-specific medical clearance, tolerance for football movements, evidence from practice, readiness to execute the defensive system and, eventually, performance under game conditions. The only league-wide step-by-step pathway in the evidence is the NFL’s concussion Return-to-Participation Protocol; knee, ankle and leg injuries are handled through individualized club and medical decisions.
The decision is staged, not date-based
A long-absent pass rusher is evaluated through several gates. Medical staff first determine whether the repaired or healing body part can tolerate the demands of the position. Coaches then need evidence that the player can practice, communicate and perform his assignment. Activation or a normal game workload may come later, after the club has observed football-specific work.

That distinction explains why a projected return date is only an estimate. In June 2026, Green Bay described Micah Parsons as five months beyond reconstructive ACL surgery with meniscus cleanup and following a nine-month no-football plan. Parsons said the goal was career longevity rather than an immediate comeback. His timeline was a plan for his case, not a league standard for every ACL injury.

What teams are trying to establish
1. The injury is medically ready for football stress
Doctors and athletic trainers assess healing, strength, range of motion, stability and symptoms relevant to the specific injury. A club’s statement that a player has been cleared is important, but it does not automatically mean he will play immediately or produce at his previous level.
2. The player tolerates position-specific movement
Edge rushers repeatedly accelerate, bend around offensive tackles, strike and shed blocks, redirect, chase quarterbacks and tackle in awkward positions. Rehabilitation therefore has to progress from controlled work to football movements at increasing speed and contact. The exact drills and thresholds are individualized and are not disclosed in the available reports.
3. Practice demonstrates football readiness
Practice lets the club observe reaction time, conditioning, contact tolerance, communication and the ability to repeat explosive efforts. Reich’s Turay explanation shows why “back at practice” and “ready for a game” are separate labels. A player may need days or weeks of work, but the sources do not establish a universal number of weeks for an edge rusher.
4. The defender can execute his role
Readiness includes more than running in a straight line. The player must align correctly, recognize formations, use the assigned rush plan, set the edge against the run and coordinate with linebackers and the secondary. A long absence can require relearning a defense, particularly when the coordinator or terminology has changed.
5. The club has observed enough to choose a workload
Even after activation, a team can limit snaps, pass-rush situations or contact exposure. The decision may be whether to play, how much to play and which packages are safest and most valuable, rather than a simple available/unavailable choice.

The formal NFL pathway: concussion only
The NFL’s published Return-to-Participation Protocol applies to diagnosed concussion, not to every injury an edge rusher can sustain. A player advances only after tolerating the current phase without recurrence of concussion signs or symptoms. The sequence progresses from symptom-limited activity to aerobic exercise, football-specific work, non-contact team drills and finally full football activity.
Before return, the protocol requires club medical clearance and independent neurological confirmation. It states that there is no set timeline and that decisions are made case by case. A knee, ankle or leg injury does not use this concussion sequence simply because the player is returning to football; those cases follow the club’s injury-specific medical and performance plan.

- Symptom-limited activity: The player performs only activity that does not bring back concussion symptoms.
- Aerobic progression: Exercise load increases while staff monitor for recurrence.
- Football-specific work: Movement and drills become more representative of the player’s position.
- Non-contact team practice: The player participates in team structure without contact.
- Full football activity and clearance: Full practice is permitted after the required medical reviews, including independent neurological confirmation.
The protocol is a defined league process, but it should not be used to infer a standard recovery schedule for ACL reconstruction, a broken leg or an ankle injury.
How physical readiness is tested outside concussion
Medical status and restrictions
For structural injuries, the club tracks the healing diagnosis, surgery or other treatment, rehabilitation milestones and any restrictions on running, cutting or contact. Public reports may say that a player is cleared by doctors and trainers, but they rarely reveal the internal strength tests or medical thresholds behind that statement.
Movement quality and repeatability
An edge rusher’s first explosive rep is not enough. Staff need to see whether he can repeat get-offs, bend, redirect and tackle without a compensatory movement or a symptom that worsens as fatigue builds. Conditioning is therefore judged alongside the injured area’s tolerance.

Contact and leverage
Pass rushing places unusual stress on a recovering leg because the defender bends around a tackle while absorbing contact. Coaches can use controlled contact, then more realistic team periods, to see whether the player can maintain leverage and technique rather than protecting the injured side.
Recovery between practices
Medical staff also watch how the body responds after work: swelling, soreness, range of motion and next-day function. A player who completes one session but cannot recover for the next progression has not demonstrated the same readiness as one who handles a repeated workload.
Practice is the bridge between rehabilitation and a game
Practice supplies evidence that examinations and isolated drills cannot. Coaches can evaluate whether the rusher reacts to a live snap, follows the call, times movement with the rest of the front and finishes plays. It also reveals whether hesitation or altered mechanics is affecting the defense.
The Turay example is useful because Reich did not promise a fixed return date. He said Turay would likely need a couple of weeks of practice after the ankle injury and had to prove himself on the practice field before the Colts considered game action. That is a coach’s estimate for one player, not a rule that every injured pass rusher needs two weeks.
Questions coaches answer during practice
- Can the player explode off the line without favoring one side?
- Can he bend around a tackle and redirect when the quarterback steps up?
- Can he set the edge and absorb a block in the run game?
- Can he communicate the front and execute a pressure with teammates?
- Does he recover normally between periods and on the following day?
- Does his technique remain sound when fatigued?
Football reacclimation can be a separate problem
Long absences interrupt more than conditioning. A player may return to a new coordinator, new terminology, different teammates or altered responsibilities. In June 2026, Parsons described learning a new coordinator’s system through visual observation and walkthrough-style explanation while he continued rehabilitation. That illustrates how a club can rebuild mental readiness before the player is cleared for full-speed contact.

Reacclimation includes recognizing formations, adjusting rush lanes, understanding when to contain the quarterback and coordinating stunts or games with interior linemen. A physically healthy player who is still late to a call can be limited to selected packages until the defense trusts his execution.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Position traits and production provide context, not a checklist
Teams use the player’s role and pre-injury profile to decide what must be demonstrated. Reich identified Turay’s speed and ability to bend around an offensive tackle as his pass-rush advantages. Those traits would be watched closely in his return, but the report does not establish a league-mandated test for speed or bend.
Detroit’s May 22, 2025 report supplied a different kind of context for Aidan Hutchinson. Before his 2024 leg injury, he recorded 7.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits and 45 total pressures in five and a half games. The figures describe his pre-injury impact; they are not evidence that he would automatically reproduce that production after returning.
Production data can help coaches set expectations and choose packages, while practice supplies current evidence. Neither historical statistics nor a single impressive drill guarantees pre-injury performance.

| Micah Parsons, Green Bay, June 3, 2026 | Five months after Dec. 29 reconstructive ACL surgery with meniscus cleanup; a reported nine-month no-football plan. | Individualized rehabilitation and a stated focus on career longevity. | A universal ACL timetable or a required absence for every edge rusher. |
| Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit, May 22, 2025 | 221 days after an October 13 leg fracture. | Cleared by doctors and trainers and fully participating in the offseason program. | A guarantee of immediate game production; the report’s 7.5 sacks, 17 quarterback hits and 45 pressures were pre-injury figures. |
| Kemoko Turay, Indianapolis, October 2020 | Return discussion after an ankle injury. | Coach Frank Reich said he likely needed a couple of weeks of practice and had to prove he could perform before a game return. | A universal number of practice weeks. |
| Myles Garrett, Los Angeles, September 14, 2026 | Return after knee surgery under discussion. | Sean McVay said he did not yet have a timeline and needed more information. | A prediction of the eventual return date or workload. |
McVay contrasted Garrett’s situation with Aaron Donald’s return after a two-year absence, describing Donald’s challenge as getting up to speed. The comparison underscores that medical condition, observed limitation and football acclimation can produce different decisions even when the absence is long.

Why “cleared” does not equal “back to normal”
Clearance answers a medical question: whether the player may participate under the relevant medical standard. Coaches still decide whether he can execute the defense, tolerate the expected contact and contribute at a useful level. The club may activate a player, dress him but limit snaps, or wait for more practice evidence.
Similarly, the first game is not necessarily the end of evaluation. Staff can monitor snap-to-snap mechanics, response to contact and recovery after the game before increasing his role. Public reports generally do not disclose the internal thresholds used for those decisions.
A practical framework for interpreting a return report
- Identify the injury and its scope. Determine whether the report concerns concussion, surgery, fracture, ligament damage or another condition.
- Separate dates from milestones. Note the surgery date or days absent, then look for clearance, non-contact participation, full practice and contact tolerance.
- Check who made the statement. A club medical update, coach comment and player estimate describe different parts of the decision.
- Look for football evidence. Practice participation, role execution and conditioning are more informative than a calendar projection alone.
- Ask whether the system changed. New terminology or a new coordinator can create a football-learning phase even after physical recovery.
- Distinguish availability from workload. “Available” may still mean a limited package or reduced snaps.
- Treat historical statistics as context. Pre-injury sacks and pressures show prior ability, not a guaranteed post-injury outcome.
What the available evidence cannot tell you
Public team and league reports do not reveal private medical records, club scoring systems or a cross-player study predicting post-injury edge-rusher performance. They therefore cannot support an average absence length, a return-success rate or a single rubric used by every NFL team.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: teams combine medical progression with football evidence. Concussion has a formal league protocol; other injuries are individualized. Practice, role execution and observed conditioning help determine when a medically progressing edge rusher is ready for game action and what workload he can handle.
