The All Whites entered the OFC pathway in round two, won their group, then beat Fiji 7–0 and New Caledonia 3–0 in two knockout games. That final victory earned Oceania’s direct place; New Zealand did not qualify through the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.
How Oceania’s 2026 qualification pathway worked
All 11 members of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) were included in the 2026 qualifying draw. The pathway had three rounds. New Zealand entered in round two, while the qualification process led into a knockout round three.

In round three, the two semi-final winners met in a final. The final winner took OFC’s direct World Cup place. The losing finalist advanced to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, where it had another possible route to the finals. New Caledonia, which lost the OFC final, went on to represent Oceania in that tournament.

What the result means for New Zealand
Winning the OFC final—not advancing through the intercontinental play-off—gave New Zealand its place at the 2026 World Cup. The finals will be the All Whites’ third appearance at the tournament, following Spain 1982 and South Africa 2010; both earlier campaigns ended in the group stage.
The qualification results and pathway are documented by FIFA and OFC. Detailed rules for contingencies such as tie-breakers, abandoned matches or disciplinary deductions are not set out in those match reports and draw materials, so they should not be inferred from the results alone.
