How Netflix’s Ad-Supported Plan Works and What You Get (2026 Guide)

Netflix’s ad-supported subscription, called Standard with ads in the United States, lowers the monthly price in exchange for short commercial breaks in most shows and movies. The US price listed by Netflix is $8.99 per month, with 1080p video, two simultaneous supported devices and downloads on two devices. Ads generally cannot be skipped, a small number of titles are unavailable because of licensing, and some older devices cannot run the ad-supported experience.

This guide explains exactly how the plan works, what its limits mean for viewing and downloads, how it compares with Netflix’s ad-free tiers, and what to check before switching.

What Netflix Standard with ads includes

Standard with ads is a regular Netflix subscription with a lower price and advertising inserted into much of the catalog. Netflix’s current US pricing page lists it at $8.99 per month. That is a US figure and can change; Netflix says prices, package names and extra-member rules vary by country and add-on, so check the plan page for your billing country before subscribing.

  • Video quality: up to 1080p (Full HD).
  • Simultaneous viewing: two supported devices can stream at the same time.
  • Downloads: Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices, subject to the separate monthly download cap described below.
  • Advertising: short ads before and during selected shows and movies.
  • Catalog: most of Netflix’s shows and movies, with a small number locked because of licensing restrictions.
  • Games and Kids profiles: Netflix says ads are not currently shown in Netflix games or on Kids profiles.

The plan is not available in every country. A title or feature available in one region may be absent in another because rights and plan availability are negotiated separately.

How the ad breaks work

When ads appear

Netflix says viewers can expect “a few short ads per hour.” Ads can run before a program starts and during selected shows and movies. Some newly released movies have ads only before playback begins. Netflix aims to place mid-roll breaks at natural plot points rather than interrupting dialogue at random, but the exact timing and number of breaks depend on the title.

Live events are a separate case. Netflix says live events are included with every plan at no additional charge, but they may contain commercial breaks on ad-supported and ad-free plans alike.

What you can and cannot do during an ad

Ads during shows and movies cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded. You can pause playback while an ad is running. When playback is paused, Netflix marks ad breaks on the progress bar. At the start of a break, the upper-right corner shows how many ads are in that break, so you can see whether you are near the end of it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a live event ends, Netflix removes the event’s breaks for ad-free viewing experiences. Ads may remain briefly after the event and can then be fast-forwarded. The live broadcast itself can still contain commercial interruptions regardless of your plan.

How Netflix selects ads

Netflix says ad selection may use your interactions with Netflix, your general location and information you provide to Netflix. Unless you opt out, selection may also use interactions with unaffiliated third-party apps or websites. Opting out of behavioral advertising changes how ads are selected; it does not remove the ads from the plan.

What the plan does to the catalog

Most shows and movies remain available, but Netflix identifies a small number of unavailable titles with a lock icon. The lock reflects licensing restrictions, not a playback error or a problem with your account. Because licensing differs by country, two people on the same plan in different regions can see different locked titles.

If a particular film or series is essential to you, search for it while signed in before changing plans. A title that is playable on an ad-free tier may be locked on Standard with ads, and availability can change when Netflix renegotiates rights.

US plan comparison

The following figures come from Netflix’s current US dollar plan comparison, accessed in 2026. They are listed prices, not a temporary promotion. Netflix can change prices and features, and other countries use different currencies and packages.

Plan US monthly price listed Ads Maximum video quality Simultaneous devices Download devices
Standard with ads $8.99 Yes, in most shows and movies 1080p 2 2
Standard $19.99 No (except possible live-event breaks) 1080p 2 2
Premium $26.99 No (except possible live-event breaks) 4K UHD with HDR and spatial audio 4 6

The practical difference between Standard with ads and Standard is price versus interruption: both list 1080p, two simultaneous devices and downloads on two devices. Premium costs more for four simultaneous streams, six download devices and 4K UHD, HDR and spatial audio where the title, device and connection support those formats.

Downloads: the limits that are easy to miss

Device allowance and monthly cap

Netflix lists downloads on two supported devices for Standard with ads. Separately, Netflix limits ad-supported plans to 15 downloads per device per calendar month, for two total devices. In practical terms, each of the two enrolled devices can download up to 15 titles during the calendar month. The allowance resets on the first day of the next month.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

The monthly rule matters if you regularly replace downloaded episodes or movies. Reaching the cap does not mean your subscription has ended; it means you must wait for the monthly reset before making additional downloads on that device.

Smart Downloads are unavailable

Ad-supported plans do not support Netflix’s automatic Smart Downloads features, including Download Next Episode and Downloads for You. You must choose and start downloads yourself. Existing manual downloads remain subject to Netflix’s normal expiration, title-rights and device-storage rules.

How this affects travel

For a short trip, manually downloading a limited number of programs can work well if you stay within the 15-per-device monthly allowance. For frequent travelers who rely on automatic episode downloads, the missing Smart Downloads functions may be more important than the lower price.

Devices, casting and compatibility

Check compatibility before subscribing

A small percentage of TVs and streaming devices cannot use the ad-supported experience because their Netflix app or operating system cannot be updated to software that supports ads. Netflix provides a Plan Compatibility check in the Netflix app on a TV or streaming device. Run that check on the device you actually use, not only on a newer phone or computer.

If the app reports incompatibility, update the device software and Netflix app if updates are available. If the device cannot receive the required update, you may need to watch on another supported device or choose a plan that the device can run.

Mobile-to-TV casting is not supported

On the ad-supported experience, Netflix says a phone or tablet cannot be cast or mirrored to a TV. This is different from ordinary playback on the phone or tablet itself. To watch on a television, use the television’s supported Netflix app, a compatible streaming device with its own Netflix app, or another officially supported connection that does not depend on mobile casting.

Do not wait until a trip or a subscription change to discover this limitation. Test the exact TV setup and sign-in method you plan to use first.

How to choose between the three US options

Choose Standard with ads when

  • You want the lowest listed monthly price and can accept unskippable breaks.
  • 1080p is sufficient for your TV, monitor and internet connection.
  • You normally watch on no more than two screens at once.
  • You download occasionally and 15 downloads per device per month is enough.
  • You do not depend on automatic Smart Downloads.

Choose Standard when

  • You want 1080p and two simultaneous streams but do not want regular ads in on-demand programs.
  • You download on two devices and need more flexibility than the ad-supported monthly cap provides.
  • You use a setup that cannot run the ad-supported version but can run the ad-free Standard plan.

Choose Premium when

  • Your compatible TV and titles support 4K UHD and HDR.
  • You want spatial audio where supported.
  • Your household needs up to four simultaneous streams.
  • You need downloads on as many as six devices rather than two.

Live-event advertising should not be the deciding factor between ad-free tiers: Netflix says commercial breaks may occur on all plans during a live event.

How to switch or verify the plan without surprises

  1. Confirm your country and account page. Open Netflix’s account or plan page while signed in and verify the currency, current price and available tiers for your billing region.
  2. Check essential titles. Search for programs you watch regularly and look for a lock icon before moving to the ad-supported tier.
  3. Run Plan Compatibility. In the Netflix app on each TV or streaming device, use the Plan Compatibility check. Update the app and device software if prompted.
  4. Test your viewing method. If you normally mirror or cast from a phone or tablet, plan to use the TV’s Netflix app or another supported app-based device instead.
  5. Count your downloads. Decide whether two download devices and 15 downloads per device per calendar month fit your routine. Turn off expectations of Download Next Episode and Downloads for You, which are not available on ad-supported plans.
  6. Review billing and timing. Netflix displays the effective date of a plan change in your account. Keep that date in mind when budgeting for the next charge and when planning downloads around the monthly reset.

Common problems and what they mean

A title shows a lock icon

This normally indicates a licensing restriction for the ad-supported catalog or your region. It is not fixed by reinstalling the app. Use another available title, check whether your country offers a different plan, or remain on an eligible ad-free tier if that title is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The TV says the plan is unsupported

The device or its Netflix app may not support the advertising technology. Check for operating-system and app updates, then run Plan Compatibility again. If no supported update exists, use a different supported playback device rather than assuming the account is defective.

You cannot cast from a phone

Mobile casting and mirroring to a TV are not supported on the ad-supported experience. Open Netflix directly on the TV or streaming device. A phone or tablet can still be used for local playback if its app and operating system are supported.

You cannot download another title

Check both limits: whether two devices are already registered for downloads and whether the device has reached 15 downloads during the current calendar month. The monthly allowance resets on the first day of the next month. Smart Downloads cannot be enabled on this plan.

You see an ad on an ad-free plan during live viewing

Netflix says live events may include commercial breaks across every plan. After the event, ad-free experiences remove the event breaks, although ads may remain briefly and can be fast-forwarded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy and advertising controls

Netflix’s ad personalization settings affect targeting, not the existence of advertising. The service may use Netflix interactions, general location and information you provide. If you do not opt out, it may also use interactions with unaffiliated third-party apps or websites. Opting out can reduce behavioral targeting while leaving the same ad-supported playback experience in place.

The bottom line for viewers

Standard with ads is a functional 1080p, two-screen Netflix plan for viewers who prioritize a lower US monthly price over uninterrupted playback. Its important trade-offs are unskippable ads, a small locked portion of the catalog, no mobile casting or mirroring, device-compatibility requirements, a 15-downloads-per-device monthly cap and no Smart Downloads. Standard keeps the same listed resolution and two-screen allowance without ordinary on-demand ads, while Premium adds 4K UHD with HDR, spatial audio, four simultaneous streams and six download devices. Check your country’s current plan page and your exact TV setup before changing subscriptions.
