Netflix Household sharing is designed for devices connected to the internet at the main residence where an account is used. A person who lives elsewhere should use a separate Netflix account or join as a paid extra member. An eligible Standard plan can add one extra member, while an eligible Premium plan can add up to two. Each extra member receives separate sign-in credentials and can watch on one device at a time.
The account owner pays for every extra-member slot. The invited person must activate the slot in the same country where the owner created the account, and VPNs, proxies, or unblockers can stop activation.

What Netflix means by a “Household”
The household is tied to a main residence
Netflix defines a Household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” In practical terms, the household is the primary residence associated with the account, not every place where a password happens to be used.
That means people who live together can use the account on the devices they normally use at home. A relative, roommate who moved out, partner in another city, or friend living at a different address is outside that household even if the person is part of the family.

Can you share with someone in another home?
Netflix says, “You may not share your Netflix account outside of your household.” For someone who lives elsewhere, the supported choices are a separate Netflix account or a paid extra-member invitation when the account and billing arrangement are eligible.
Simply giving another person the main account password is not the same as adding an extra member. It leaves the other person using the owner’s credentials and does not provide the separate login, profile controls, or one-device allowance that Netflix documents for an extra member.
Which plans support extra members?
Eligibility depends on the Netflix plan and how the account is billed. The number of slots is separate from the number of screens available to the owner’s household under its plan.

How many extra members can you add?
An eligible Standard account can add one. An eligible Premium account can add up to two. Those are maximum slot counts, not a guarantee that every Standard or Premium account can use the feature: ad-supported plans and some package-billed accounts remain excluded.

What an extra member receives
A separate account login
Netflix describes an extra member as having “their own account and password,” while the person who invited them pays for the membership. The invitee does not need to keep using the owner’s main email-and-password combination for ordinary sign-in.
The extra member also gets a profile. During activation, the person can create a new profile or accept a profile transferred from an eligible existing profile. That profile keeps its own personalization rather than mixing the viewer’s activity into the owner’s main profile.

Personalized viewing information
A transferred profile can preserve recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, and settings. Profile transfer is optional; an invitee can start with a new profile instead. The transfer rules are narrower than a general copy operation, because Netflix excludes certain profile types.
One device at a time
Netflix documents one-device-at-a-time viewing for an extra-member account. If that person needs simultaneous viewing on multiple devices, the documented route is a separate full Netflix plan rather than treating one extra-member slot as a multi-screen subscription.
The owner remains responsible for payment
The invitee uses separate credentials, but the extra-member charge is attached to the account owner’s membership. The owner sees the new payment amount before confirming the slot. Netflix notes that proration or a change to the billing date may apply when the slot is added.

Country and location restrictions
Activation must happen in the owner’s account country
An extra member must activate in the same country where the account owner created the Netflix account. A person who lives in a different country cannot create the extra-member account under that invitation, even if the two people are related.
VPNs, proxies, and unblockers can block setup
Netflix specifically warns that VPNs, proxies, and unblockers can prevent activation. If the invitee is physically in the correct country but has one of these services enabled, disable it before opening the invitation link and trying again.
Country is not the same as household
Being in the same country does not make two homes one Household. The household rule concerns the main residence and its connected devices; the country rule governs where an extra member can activate the invitation.
How to add an extra member
The account owner completes the purchase and invitation. The person being invited then activates the slot and sets up the profile.
- Open account settings. Sign in as the Netflix account owner and open the account settings area.
- Choose “Buy an extra member slot.” If this option is missing, check the eligibility and billing limitations described below before attempting another setup.
- Review the new payment amount. Confirm the additional charge. Netflix notes that adding a slot can involve proration or a billing-date change.
- Enter the invitee’s details. Provide the person’s name and email address. In a TV-based flow, Netflix may provide a phone-number option instead.
- Send the invitation. Netflix generates a unique invitation link and sends it to the recipient.
- Activate the membership. The recipient opens the invitation, creates the extra-member account credentials, and chooses either a new profile or an eligible profile transfer.
- Use the account within its limits. The extra member signs in with the new credentials and watches on one device at a time.
The account owner should send the invitation to the person who will actually use the slot. Because the invitation creates a separate login and the owner pays for it, forwarding account-owner credentials defeats the purpose of the extra-member arrangement.

How profile transfer works
What can move to the extra-member profile
When Netflix offers profile transfer during extra-member activation, the transfer can carry over:
- Personalized recommendations
- Viewing history
- My List
- Saved games
- Profile settings
This is useful when a family member has been using a profile on the owner’s account and wants to keep the profile’s accumulated personalization after moving to a separate login.
Profiles that cannot be transferred
Netflix excludes Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles, and the main profile from transfer. If the desired profile falls into one of those categories, the invitee must use a new profile or another eligible profile instead.
Profile transfer is not required for an extra-member slot. A new profile starts without the old profile’s recommendations and history, but it avoids the restrictions that apply to a transfer.

Replacing an extra member
Netflix allows the owner to change an extra member up to twice per calendar month. Replacing the recipient removes the current extra member immediately, so that person loses access as soon as the replacement is completed.
Canceling a slot
Canceling an extra-member slot does not necessarily stop access at that instant. Netflix says the current extra member can continue watching through the end of the current billing period. The owner should distinguish between replacing a recipient, which ends access immediately, and canceling a slot, which preserves access until the paid period ends.
Canceling the primary account
If the main Netflix membership is canceled, its extra-member slots are canceled as well. An extra member cannot keep that slot independently after the owner’s primary account ends.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The “Buy an extra member slot” option is missing
- Confirm that the account is on an eligible Standard or Premium plan rather than an ad-supported plan.
- Check whether Netflix is billed through a package provider or another third party that does not support extra members.
- Verify that the signed-in user is the account owner, not an invited profile.
If the account is package-billed, the provider’s restrictions can determine availability. Upgrading within Netflix may not solve a limitation imposed by the billing partner.

- Make sure the invitee is in the same country where the owner created the account.
- Disable any VPN, proxy, or unblocker and retry the invitation.
- Use the unique invitation link sent by Netflix rather than attempting to create the extra-member account independently.
The recipient wants to use several devices at once
One extra-member account is documented for one device at a time. If the recipient needs simultaneous viewing on multiple devices, a separate full Netflix plan is the appropriate alternative.
The recipient wants to keep an old profile
Choose profile transfer during activation only if the profile is not a Kids, PIN-protected, or main profile. Otherwise, create a new profile and expect to rebuild its recommendations and list over time.

An extra member is generally the fit for one person who lives elsewhere but remains in the same country and only needs one-device viewing. A separate account is more suitable when the person needs independent billing, multiple simultaneous devices, or an account that will not disappear if the original owner cancels.
Why Netflix tightened account sharing
Netflix said in 2023 that “over 100 million households are sharing accounts.” That figure was the company’s global statement at the time, not a current count for every country or a measure of how many extra-member slots exist today. The Household rule and paid extra-member model are Netflix’s way of separating use at the main residence from access by people who live elsewhere.

Bottom line for common situations
- Family member in your home: Household sharing is intended for devices connected at the main residence.
- Family member in another home, same country: Use a paid extra-member slot if the account is an eligible Standard or Premium plan and the person can activate without a VPN, proxy, or unblocker.
- Family member in another country: The extra-member invitation cannot be activated there; that person needs a separate account in the country where they live.
- Friend using the owner’s password: That is not the documented extra-member setup. Invite the person as an extra member or direct them to a separate account.
- Person who needs several screens: One extra-member slot is limited to one device at a time, so a separate full plan may be necessary.
