NASA builds Curiosity panoramas by taking many separate camera frames and stitching them together on Earth. Mastcam provides color imagery, while Navcam can contribute black-and-white frames; the final image may retain camera color under Martian lighting or be white-balanced to look more like a scene in terrestrial daylight.

How Curiosity panorama images are captured and assembled

A panorama is a composite, not one ultra-wide exposure. Curiosity points its cameras at different parts of a scene and takes individual pictures. NASA camera-team lead Justin Maki describes the process: “We move the cameras between each individual picture and stitch them together on the ground.” NASA does not specify the current software or the precise feature-matching and blending algorithms used, so those implementation details should not be assumed.

The number of frames and the time needed to assemble a panorama depend on the product. For a landscape panorama captured Nov. 24–Dec. 1, 2019, NASA/JPL used more than 1,000 images and assembled them over the following months. The landscape version without the rover was nearly 1.8 billion pixels; a medium-angle version showing the rover deck and arm was nearly 650 million pixels. NASA/JPL’s 2020 panorama description gives those figures for that specific set of images.

Which cameras contribute to the mosaic?

Mastcam is Curiosity’s color imaging system for geology and panorama imagery. Navcam is a black-and-white navigation camera, and its frames may also appear in a panorama, including views of the rover itself. The mix varies by image product.

For the Rocknest panorama, NASA’s mosaic combined 850 Mastcam telephoto frames, 21 Mastcam wide-angle frames, and 25 Navcam frames, mostly showing the rover. The nearly 900 component images formed a 1.3-billion-pixel full-resolution view. These are Rocknest-specific figures, not a standard recipe for every Curiosity panorama. NASA Science’s Rocknest description identifies the frame counts and mosaic scale.

Why NASA publishes different color versions

“Raw color” and “white-balanced” describe different renderings of the same scene, not two competing claims about exactly what a person standing on Mars would see.

Version What it represents Why it is useful
Raw color Colors as recorded by the camera under Martian lighting conditions. Preserves the appearance produced by the scene’s actual lighting and the camera’s response.
White-balanced Color adjusted toward the familiar look of a scene illuminated by terrestrial daylight. Makes colors easier for people to interpret by reference to familiar Earth lighting.

NASA describes its first high-resolution Mastcam mosaic as available in raw color as well as a white-balanced treatment. The NASA description of the mosaic explains the distinction and why scientists may use the more familiar treatment. A white-balanced view is an adjustment for interpretation, not an unaltered record of Martian illumination.

Mastcam’s calibration target includes known colors. Comparing those references with the camera’s readings helps researchers estimate more natural color; it does not turn raw color into a definitive human-eye view. NASA explains the target’s role in its Mastcam calibration-target description.

Why panorama colors and brightness can change across the image

Not every visible tonal boundary is a stitching flaw. A mosaic may combine frames taken at different times, or even over several days. In the Rocknest raw-color panorama, NASA notes that illumination differences reflect the time of acquisition, while changes in atmospheric clarity reflect variable dustiness during the month. Those conditions can make adjacent parts of the assembled scene look different even when the frames are joined into one panorama. NASA’s Rocknest explanation documents these variations.

Why panorama versions differ in scale and view

NASA can assemble images for different fields of view and purposes. A telephoto landscape mosaic emphasizes distant terrain at high resolution; a medium-angle view may include Curiosity’s deck and arm. Color-camera and navigation-camera contributions also vary by product, so a panorama’s frame count, pixel total, and appearance are not universal specifications.

For another example of a specific product, NASA Science describes a Mastcam panorama acquired Nov. 18, 2020 from 122 individual images and white-balanced to resemble daytime lighting on Earth. NASA Science’s 2021 panorama page gives those details.
