How Much Unified Memory Does a Mac mini Need for Local AI Models in 2026?

By Freedom251 Team · · 8 min read

For a Mac mini bought mainly to run local AI models, 24GB of unified memory is the best default. It leaves useful room for model weights, longer prompts, macOS and ordinary applications without moving into the cost and power envelope of the 48GB and 64GB M4 Pro configurations. A Mac mini M4 with 24GB unified memory suits most chat, coding and summarization workloads.

Choose 16GB only if you expect to stay with small models and light experimentation. Choose 32GB when larger experiments, heavier multitasking or roughly 20B–30B-class models are part of the plan. The 48GB and 64GB M4 Pro tiers are specialist choices for long context, vision, concurrent workloads or larger model tests—not a guarantee that every 70B model will be comfortable.

Apple’s Mac mini memory options

Apple’s Mac mini (2024) specification offers two chip families. The M4 starts at 16GB and can be configured with 24GB or 32GB. The M4 Pro starts at 24GB and can be configured with 48GB or 64GB. Memory is unified, so the same pool is shared by the CPU, GPU, macOS and the inference software.

Configuration Apple memory options Bandwidth Practical local-AI role Purchase cost
M4 16GB, 24GB, 32GB 120GB/s Small to medium models, depending on context and other applications Not stated in the cited Apple specification
M4 Pro 24GB, 48GB, 64GB 273GB/s More memory-intensive models, longer context, vision and concurrent workloads Not stated in the cited Apple specification

Because unified memory is selected when you buy the computer, it is not an upgrade you can add later. Choose for the largest workload you realistically expect, not only for the model you want to try first.

What the memory has to hold

A model download is not the entire memory requirement. The weights occupy one portion of the pool, while the runtime, operating system and active applications consume the rest. During a conversation, the key-value (KV) cache grows as the context grows. A long coding session can therefore need substantially more memory than a short question with the same model.

Browser tabs, Docker containers, Open WebUI and other developer tools compete with inference for the same bytes. Two models with the same parameter count can have different usable-memory requirements because architecture, quantization, context setting and runtime overhead differ. A model that technically loads can still become unpleasantly slow if macOS begins swapping data to storage.

Why headroom matters

Leave room for the conversation to grow and for the applications you use alongside the model. A model that fits only when every other application is closed is a poor fit for a daily coding or research workstation. Headroom also makes it easier to test a different quantization or a longer context without immediately changing hardware.

What 16GB can realistically do

Current guidance places a 16GB M4 Mac mini around 1B–8B models. That range covers local chat, summaries, small coding tasks and learning how the local-model workflow works. It is the entry point for experimentation, not a broad guarantee for every model labeled “8B.”

Best uses for 16GB

  • Short conversations with small instruct models.
  • Summarizing documents in modest batches.
  • Light coding assistance while keeping context moderate.
  • Learning a local runtime and its model-management workflow.

How to keep a 16GB system responsive

Keep context moderate, close unused applications and watch macOS memory pressure while a model is generating. Avoid running several model processes at once. If the system starts swapping, reduce context or model size before assuming that a faster runtime will solve the problem; storage traffic can dominate the experience.

A dated Macstripe lab table measured approximately 29 tokens per second for a 7B model and 28.8 tokens per second for an 8B model on its 16GB test unit. Those are Macstripe’s results on that particular hardware, software and configuration, not a promised speed for every 16GB Mac mini.

Why 24GB is the practical middle tier

Guidance places 24GB around 8B–14B models. A 12B model can be feasible when context is controlled and background applications are limited. This tier gives the weights and runtime more breathing room than 16GB while keeping the machine in the standard M4 range or at the entry memory level of M4 Pro.

Who should choose 24GB

  • Anyone buying primarily for local chat and coding but wanting more than small-model headroom.
  • Users who keep a browser, editor and documentation open during inference.
  • People who want to try 12B or 14B models without making a specialist workstation purchase.
  • Buyers who are uncertain whether their interest will remain limited to 7B-class models.

Macstripe’s dated lab table reported approximately 15.1 tokens per second for a 14B model and 51.1 tokens per second for a 7B model on its 24GB test unit. These figures belong to that test setup and should be treated as measurements, not guarantees. Model format, runtime, context and software versions can change throughput substantially.

When 32GB is worth paying for

Thirty-two gigabytes makes selected 20B–30B-class experiments more realistic, but it does not make them automatically comfortable. Larger models need room for weights and KV cache, and the operating system still needs a working margin. A 32GB M4 can therefore be a sensible enthusiast configuration without being a universal “27B or 30B” solution.

Choose 32GB when

  • You expect to test models beyond the usual 7B–14B range.
  • You routinely combine inference with an editor, many browser tabs, containers or other tools.
  • You want to experiment with longer prompts but can begin with short context.
  • You prefer reducing memory pressure over closing applications before every session.

Start a larger model with a short context, then inspect actual memory pressure as the conversation grows. Quantization, architecture and runtime implementation can determine whether a particular 20B–30B model is usable, so parameter count alone is not a capacity test.

What 48GB and 64GB M4 Pro add

The 48GB and 64GB options are for workloads where memory capacity, not merely the ability to launch a model, is the limiting factor. They are appropriate for longer context windows, vision workloads, concurrent applications and larger model experiments. The M4 Pro also provides 273GB/s of memory bandwidth, compared with 120GB/s for M4, although bandwidth does not remove the capacity limits imposed by weights, cache and software overhead.

Why these tiers still have limits

A 70B model can require more memory than the machine has once its model file, runtime overhead and KV cache are considered. Even when a compressed or quantized file appears small enough, context growth and other applications can push the system into swapping. Check each model and format individually rather than treating 48GB or 64GB as a blanket 70B guarantee.

Match memory to the workload

Workload Reasonable starting tier Important condition
Learning local inference, summaries and short chat 16GB Stay mainly within 1B–8B models and keep context moderate
Daily chat and coding with normal multitasking 24GB 8B–14B models are the practical target; 12B needs controlled conditions
Regular larger-model experiments 32GB Selected 20B–30B models may work; test context and memory pressure
Long context, vision or several heavy applications 48GB or 64GB M4 Pro Verify every model’s weights, cache and runtime requirements

This table describes useful starting points, not hard compatibility boundaries. A smaller quantized model may run where a larger unquantized model does not, and a modest model with a very long context can consume more memory than its parameter label suggests.

Context length, quantization and runtime change the answer

Context length

Context determines how much conversation, source text or code the model must keep available. As context expands, the KV cache grows. If a model is comfortable for a short question but slows during a long multi-turn session, memory pressure—not necessarily the model’s raw generation speed—may be the cause.

Quantization

Quantization reduces the storage and memory footprint of model weights, but the result depends on the format and runtime. It can make a model fit in a smaller tier, yet it does not eliminate cache growth or operating-system overhead. Compare the actual model file and expected context rather than relying on the parameter count alone.

Runtime choice

Ollama is a practical local runtime for command-line automation and a localhost API. MLX is another option designed around Apple silicon. The runtime, model tag, quantization and context setting all affect memory use and speed, so record those details when you evaluate a model. A result obtained with one runtime should not be assumed for another.

A reliable way to plan before buying

  1. List the largest model you genuinely expect to use. Separate everyday models from occasional experiments, and include the context length needed for your work.
  2. Add the applications that remain open. Count your browser, editor, containers, local interfaces and any other always-on tools; they share unified memory with inference.
  3. Choose a tier with operating headroom. Do not size the machine so the model occupies nearly all available memory at launch.
  4. Check the exact model package. Weight format, quantization and runtime can change the requirement even when two models have the same parameter count.
  5. Plan for growth. Memory is fixed after purchase, while model sizes and context expectations tend to increase as your workflow develops.

How to validate a model after setup

Begin with the context length you actually need, then observe memory pressure during generation and while carrying out your normal multitasking. Test a short prompt first, extend the conversation, and finally reopen the applications you normally use. If performance degrades only after context grows, reduce the context or choose a smaller format. If it degrades as soon as other applications open, the machine needs more headroom for that workflow.

Keep notes on the model tag, quantization, runtime and context setting. Without those details, a speed or capacity observation cannot be compared fairly with another test. Macstripe’s published token-per-second figures illustrate this limitation: they are tied to its dated test units and software conditions.

Privacy and “local” inference checks

Running a local interface does not by itself prove that every request stays on the Mac. Confirm that the selected runtime and model endpoint perform inference locally, especially when privacy is the reason for avoiding a hosted service. A localhost user interface can still be configured to route work to a cloud model.

Bottom line for each buyer

  • Buy 16GB for small models, short contexts and light experimentation where closing applications is acceptable.
  • Buy 24GB for the broadest balance of local chat, coding, multitasking and medium-size models.
  • Buy 32GB for a stronger enthusiast buffer and selected 20B–30B-class tests, with no promise of universal comfort.
  • Buy 48GB or 64GB M4 Pro for long context, vision, concurrent heavy applications or larger experiments, while checking every model individually.
