The PC number is Activision’s launch specification for Modern Warfare 4. It is not a promise that every future patch, optional content pack or connected Call of Duty component will fit within exactly that amount.

What the 115 GB PC figure actually means
It is the launch requirement for every listed PC tier
Activision’s PC requirements use the same “Storage Space: 115 GB – SSD required” entry for minimum, recommended and ray-tracing configurations. Storage capacity therefore does not change when you move between those performance targets; the differences between tiers concern processing hardware, graphics capability and settings rather than a larger published disk allocation.

The requirements table does not list an HDD alternative. Treat an SSD as a prerequisite for the supported PC installation. If your computer has only a mechanical hard drive, adding free capacity to that disk does not satisfy the stated storage requirement; you need an SSD with enough available space.

The number is measured at launch
Call of Duty installations can change as patches, seasonal content and shared components are added or removed. Activision’s requirements note specifically says that additional storage may be required for mandatory game updates. Keep that qualification with the 115 GB figure whenever you plan an installation: it is the launch baseline, not a guaranteed long-term maximum.
How much free space should you leave?
Start with more free capacity than the published baseline. The official material does not set a universal extra allowance, and update sizes vary, so there is no defensible single number to add for every player. The practical rule is to avoid filling the target SSD to the point that an update would have nowhere to download or unpack.
- Verify that at least the full launch requirement is free on the SSD where the game will be installed.
- Leave additional room for mandatory updates instead of treating the baseline as the exact amount you can consume.
- Account for other Call of Duty content, Windows files, game-launcher caches and your normal applications on that same drive.
- If the drive is nearly full, move or delete unrelated files before beginning the installation rather than waiting for an update to fail.
A 1 TB internal SSD is a sensible capacity category for a gaming PC because it exceeds the launch requirement and leaves room for updates, other games and ordinary system use. That is capacity guidance, not an endorsement of a particular manufacturer or model.
Why the installed footprint can change
Mandatory updates can need temporary working space
An update may need room for the download and for replacement files while the installer applies it. Consequently, a drive that barely meets the initial requirement can still report insufficient space later. Activision gives the general warning that mandatory updates may require additional storage; it does not publish one permanent update reserve.

Texture streaming reduces local storage, but needs connectivity
Activision says Modern Warfare 4 uses texture streaming across all game modes to deliver high-quality visuals while reducing the game’s overall storage space on the hard drive. Streaming changes where some assets are supplied, but it should not be interpreted as permission to install below the published PC requirement. You still need the stated local allocation, an SSD and the network access required by the game’s connected features.
The full release is part of the connected Call of Duty installation
The beta used a separate install. The full game is part of the connected Call of Duty experience alongside Warzone, with shared content intended to reduce duplicated files and the overall footprint. Depending on which components you already have installed, your launcher may therefore show a different amount to download, remove or retain than another player’s system.
What is known about PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 storage?
No fixed byte total for a PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch 2 installation appears in the official pages reviewed. Do not substitute a rumor, a screenshot from an earlier release or a third-party estimate for an official figure.

The reviewed official information does not state one PS5 installation size. Check the current store listing and the console’s free-space prompt immediately before installation. Leave room beyond the displayed package size because a later mandatory update can require more capacity.

Xbox Series X|S
Xbox’s official listing warns that mandatory updates may need additional storage, but it does not provide one fixed Modern Warfare 4 total in the material reviewed. The console’s installation screen is the authoritative indication for the package currently offered to your account and region.
Nintendo Switch 2
A fixed Switch 2 byte total was not published in the official pages reviewed. Confirm whether the current release uses internal storage, a compatible expansion medium or a combination, and follow the capacity shown by the eShop or console before starting the download.

For a PC purchase, search by capacity and interface—for example, “1TB internal SSD” or “NVMe SSD for gaming”—then verify that your motherboard has the required slot or that the drive’s cable and enclosure are supported. Capacity is only one part of the decision: the drive must be visible to the operating system and usable by your game platform.
How to check and prepare a PC before installing
- Identify the target drive. In your launcher’s install settings, note the drive and folder selected for Modern Warfare 4. Checking the wrong disk is a common reason an installation unexpectedly stops.
- Check available capacity. In Windows, open File Explorer, select This PC and read the free-space figure for the target SSD. You can also open Settings, choose System, then Storage for a breakdown of what is consuming space.
- Compare free space with the launch requirement. The target must have at least the published PC allocation available, and it should retain additional room for mandatory updates and normal system activity.
- Clear nonessential files. Remove temporary downloads, uninstall games you no longer use or move personal media to another supported drive. Emptying the recycle bin can recover space that is still counted as occupied.
- Keep the installation path on an SSD. If multiple drives are available, choose the SSD rather than a larger HDD. The official PC table requires the SSD medium.
- Start while connected to the internet. The connected Call of Duty installation may need online access to obtain files and updates. Do not assume that a completed initial download means every mode can run offline.
- Recheck space after installation. Once the launcher reports completion, look at the drive again. This establishes how much capacity remains before the next mandatory update.
Internet requirements that affect storage planning
Activision’s FAQ says Multiplayer—including private matches—and DMZ require a continuous internet connection. That requirement matters when you plan storage because texture streaming, shared Call of Duty content and future updates are part of a connected service rather than a one-time disc-style installation. The official statement does not say that every mode has identical offline behavior, so do not generalize the Multiplayer and DMZ requirement to modes for which Activision has not made the same claim.

Troubleshooting common storage errors
“Not enough space” appears even though the drive meets the baseline
The remaining free space may be consumed by an update, temporary installation files or another Call of Duty component. Close other downloads, remove unnecessary files and retry with a larger reserve. If the error persists, confirm that the launcher is using the SSD you checked rather than another nearly full drive.
The game is installed on an HDD
Move or reinstall it to an SSD. Adding more free capacity to the HDD does not change the requirement stated in Activision’s PC table.
The console asks for more room than the store listing
Use the console’s current prompt as the immediate installation requirement and keep additional capacity available for mandatory updates. Store package size, installed size and update working space can differ, and the reviewed official pages do not provide one universal console total.
The beta occupies space separately
The beta was a separate install. If it is still present, remove it only after confirming that you no longer need its files; deleting it can recover space without changing the full game installation. The beta’s size should not be used as a forecast for the final release.
Planning for future seasons and updates
Keep a buffer on the installation drive instead of filling it with other games immediately after Modern Warfare 4 finishes installing. Periodically check the free-space figure before a major update, and move unrelated games or media if the drive is approaching capacity. Because Activision has not published a fixed lifetime maximum, the safest plan is capacity management rather than relying on one permanent number.
For PC players, the actionable baseline is straightforward: use an SSD, make the launch allocation available, and retain extra room for mandatory updates. Console players should rely on the current platform listing and installation prompt because an official fixed total was not established for the reviewed systems.
