Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It depends on how much new video you keep, not on how many hours the library plays. A fixed playlist that loops all year occupies storage only once. If you add and retain 24 hours of new footage every day, a useful estimate is combined bitrate in Mbps × hours × 0.45 = decimal GB. At YouTube’s reference bitrates for 1080p SDR video plus stereo audio, that works out to about 90.6 GB per day, 2.72 TB per 30 days, or 33.0 TB per year.
Estimate storage from bitrate and hours retained
Encoded file size is driven by duration and the combined video-and-audio bitrate. Resolution alone cannot give an exact file size: two 1080p exports can have different bitrates and therefore different sizes. When you have the files, use their actual sizes; when planning an export, use its actual combined bitrate if known.

For decimal units, where 1 TB = 1,000 GB:
- GB per hour ≈ combined Mbps × 0.45
- GB per day ≈ combined Mbps × 10.8
- TB per 365-day year ≈ combined Mbps × 3.942
The conversion comes from 1 Mbps × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8 bits per byte = 450,000,000 bytes per hour, or 0.45 decimal GB. These are estimates; actual files may vary.

YouTube’s current recommended upload references for SDR video at standard frame rates are 5 Mbps for 720p, 8 Mbps for 1080p, and 35–45 Mbps for 2160p (4K). Its stereo-audio reference is 384 kbps, or 0.384 Mbps. Adding that audio reference to each video bitrate gives the combined rates below. The resulting storage figures are calculations, not measurements of a particular sleep-sound export. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings are guidance, not a requirement for every upload.

| Illustrative format | Combined bitrate used | 24 hours of new files | 30 days | 365 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 720p SDR, standard frame rate, stereo audio | 5.384 Mbps | About 58 GB | About 1.74 TB | About 21.2 TB |
| 1080p SDR, standard frame rate, stereo audio | 8.384 Mbps | About 90.6 GB | About 2.72 TB | About 33.0 TB |
| 4K SDR, standard frame rate, stereo audio, lower video reference | 35.384 Mbps | About 382 GB | About 11.5 TB | About 139 TB |
| 4K SDR, standard frame rate, stereo audio, upper video reference | 45.384 Mbps | About 490 GB | About 14.7 TB | About 179 TB |
These estimates assume 24 hours of new files are retained every day. They use decimal units and exclude backups, extra versions, filesystem overhead, and spare capacity. YouTube says audio playback bitrate is not related to video resolution, so treat the audio rate as a separate part of the estimate rather than assuming it rises with resolution.
Choose the right meaning of “24/7 library”
A fixed playlist that loops continuously
Count each source file once. Replaying the same videos around the clock for a year does not create another year of files. Add the actual file sizes of the videos in the playlist to estimate the library’s encoded-file storage.

New recordings added and kept every day
Estimate one day’s files, then multiply by the number of days you plan to retain. At the illustrative 1080p reference rate, 24 hours is about 90.6 GB; retaining a new 24 hours daily for a year is about 33.0 TB before copies and headroom.

An existing collection with mixed lengths or settings
The most reliable method is to add the files’ actual sizes. If those are unavailable, group the files by representative bitrate and total hours, calculate each group separately, and add the results. A single average bitrate can mislead when formats or export settings vary substantially.
Plan capacity beyond the encoded files
The arithmetic estimates the primary encoded files only. Decide separately whether your capacity must also cover:

- Alternate edits, exports, or versions of the same video.
- Temporary working files used during editing or rendering.
- Headroom for future additions and storage-system overhead.
Those amounts depend on your archive policy, so they are not included in the table. Before buying storage, check representative exports or measure the existing files; sleep visuals may be static or low-motion, but that alone does not establish a reliable bitrate or file size.

Keep a YouTube sleep stream running without storing a year of new files
If the goal is continuous playback rather than keeping a growing archive, the playback schedule does not itself multiply your stored file size. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its slots include 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, for uploaded content; that is not a claim that it can hold a year of newly recorded 24/7 footage. See StreamNeo for details.
