Insta360 rates the removable 2,400 mAh battery for 88 minutes of 8K30 recording in a laboratory test. Two batteries provide about 176 minutes of nominal 8K30 runtime and three provide about 264 minutes, but screen use, wireless connections, temperature, transfers and frequent starts and stops reduce practical endurance. For most day shoots, a compatible 512 GB card and two batteries are a sensible baseline; choose 1 TB and additional power when you cannot offload footage or expect long continuous takes.

How much storage does 8K video use?
The X5’s published maximum video bitrate is 180 megabits per second (Mbps). Dividing by eight converts bits to bytes: 22.5 megabytes per second (MB/s). At that planning rate, one minute uses roughly 1.35 gigabytes (GB) when using decimal storage units.
This is a capacity estimate derived from the maximum bitrate. Actual file sizes can be lower or vary with recording mode, frame rate, codec, scene complexity and whether the camera records below 180 Mbps. Leave free space instead of planning to fill a card to its printed capacity; formatting and file-system overhead also reduce usable space.

The figures in the table use decimal GB and the published maximum bitrate. They should be treated as planning ceilings rather than promised recording times. If your selected mode uses a lower bitrate, the same card can hold more footage; if it approaches the maximum, the estimates are closer to what you will see.
Is a 512 GB or 1 TB card better?
Both sizes are within the X5’s stated 1 TB maximum, so the decision is about workflow rather than image quality. A 512 GB card gives approximately 6.32 hours at the maximum 8K bitrate, which is usually enough for a day when clips are transferred to a computer or storage drive between shooting blocks. A 1 TB card doubles that headroom to about 12.35 hours and is useful when the camera will remain in a remote, mounted or hard-to-reach position.

Capacity does not replace backup discipline. If the footage is important, a second card or a verified copy during a break can be safer than putting an entire production on one 1 TB card. Conversely, repeatedly removing a card to offload during a continuous installation may create more operational risk than carrying one larger card. Choose the size that matches the time between safe, verified transfers.

Insta360’s guidance calls for an exFAT-format microSD card with UHS-I and a V30 or higher speed class. The company’s compatibility list includes the SanDisk Extreme V30 A2 family in 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB capacities. The capacity and speed labels must both match the requirement; a large card without the required sustained-write rating is not a safe substitute.

- Avoid: UHS-II or UHS-III cards and cards larger than 1 TB, which are outside the stated support guidance.
Insta360 warns: “Using incompatible microSD cards may cause issues while recording, and footage may be damaged or unusable.” A card that appears fast in a computer can still fail in a camera if its sustained write behavior, file system or interface is incompatible. Keep a known-compatible spare rather than relying on an untested card for an irreplaceable take.
How many batteries do you need for 8K?
The X5 battery is rated at 2,400 mAh. Insta360’s published laboratory result is 88 minutes of 8K30 recording for one battery. That is the appropriate baseline for planning 8K30, not a guarantee for every environment or shooting style.

These totals are simple additions of the laboratory rating. They do not account for time spent viewing the screen, using wireless connections, transferring files, starting and stopping repeatedly, or operating in cold temperatures. Keep a margin instead of scheduling a critical final take at the exact moment the calculated battery time ends.
Match batteries to the way you shoot
- Short, staged clips: Two batteries generally cover a normal day better than one because the camera spends less time recording continuously and you can swap between takes.
- Long continuous takes: Carry at least two, and consider a third if a battery change would interrupt the shot. A swap during a take can mean a missed moment, a changed camera position or a new synchronization step.
- Remote or mounted camera: Combine spare batteries with USB-C external power when the mounting arrangement and environment allow it. Protect the connection from strain, moisture and accidental unplugging.
- Cold locations: Treat 88 minutes as an upper planning reference rather than a field guarantee. Keep spare batteries warm and available for rotation.
Why do some specifications show longer battery life?
Longer figures usually refer to lower-resolution or endurance modes, not 8K. Insta360 publishes 135 minutes at 5.7K30 and 185 minutes at 5.7K24 Endurance mode in laboratory tests. Those results explain why a listing may appear to promise more than 88 minutes, but they should not be presented as 8K runtime.

Half-day shoot with regular offloads
Choose a 512 GB card and two batteries. The card’s approximately 6.32-hour maximum-bitrate capacity is far beyond the 176 minutes of nominal 8K30 battery time, so power—not storage—is likely to be the first limit. Transfer and verify clips during a planned break if the material matters.
Full day with no reliable offload point
A 1 TB card minimizes the chance of running out of space, offering about 12.35 hours at the planning bitrate. Carry at least two batteries for 176 nominal minutes; add a third if the camera will record for much of the day or if charging access is uncertain. The card can outlast the batteries, so do not mistake high capacity for all-day power.
Long, unattended or hard-to-reach installation
Use the largest supported card when changing media is impractical, and plan USB-C external power if the physical setup permits a secure connection. Three batteries alone provide only about 264 nominal minutes and cannot sustain a longer continuous run unless you can change them without interrupting the recording.

Travel with frequent backups
A 512 GB card plus a second compatible card can be easier to manage than one 1 TB card. Rotating cards lets you preserve a card as a fallback while another is being copied, and limits the amount of footage exposed if one card is lost. Confirm each copy before formatting or reusing media.
Step-by-step: choose a reliable X5 8K setup
- Estimate recording minutes. Add the time you expect to record, not the entire time you will be at the location. Include retakes, safety angles and planned continuous sections.
- Convert minutes to capacity. Multiply expected minutes by approximately 1.35 GB. Add headroom for bitrate variation, file-system overhead and clips you did not originally schedule.

- Protect the footage. Keep a spare compatible card and make verified copies during breaks. Do not erase a card merely because a transfer window appears to have completed; check that the files open from the destination.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using the 5.7K figure for 8K: The 135-minute and 185-minute laboratory results apply to different modes. Use 88 minutes for 8K30 planning.
- Assuming a 1 TB card guarantees 12.35 hours: That number is a maximum-bitrate estimate. Mode, frame rate, codec and scenes change consumption, and usable formatted capacity is lower than the label.
- Buying by capacity alone: Confirm exFAT, UHS-I and V30 or higher. Incompatible media can produce recording problems or damaged, unusable footage.
- Filling the card completely: Leave headroom for retakes and variation. A full card at the end of a critical take is an avoidable failure point.
- Planning battery swaps during a take: Schedule changes between clips or provide secure external power. A battery count is not the same as uninterrupted recording time.
- Ignoring operating conditions: Screen activity, wireless use, file transfers, cold temperatures and repeated starts and stops all reduce the practical runtime below the laboratory baseline.
A practical recommendation
For a typical day of 8K capture, start with a 512 GB exFAT UHS-I V30-or-higher microSD card and two 2,400 mAh batteries. That combination offers about 6.32 hours of maximum-bitrate card capacity and 176 minutes of nominal 8K30 recording. Move to a 1 TB card when you cannot offload for more than six hours or the camera is mounted where media changes are disruptive.
