For most people, 512 GB is the practical middle ground. Choose 256 GB only for a light, cloud-oriented setup; choose 1 TB or more if you keep substantial photo, video, game or offline-media libraries on the computer. Microsoft lists 64 GB as the minimum storage requirement for Windows 11, but that is a compatibility floor, not enough room for a comfortable everyday collection.
The right capacity depends on what stays local, how large your applications are, how long you will keep the computer and whether you are willing to use external or cloud storage. The sections below show how to calculate that need instead of relying on a single universal number.

What SSD capacity should you buy?
Use the following as practical starting points, not official guarantees for every user or device. Your available space will be lower than the number printed on the drive because the operating system, preinstalled software, formatting and recovery data consume part of it.
| SSD capacity | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 256 GB | Light users who stream media, rely on cloud files and install only a modest set of applications. | Little room for growth; a few large games, video projects or photo libraries can consume the remaining space quickly. |
| 512 GB | A broad everyday app and document collection, with some local photos and media. | May become restrictive for people who keep several large games, extensive creative projects or years of high-resolution photos offline. |
| 1 TB or more | Users who store sizable photo, movie, game or creative libraries on the internal drive. | Higher purchase cost, although it can be cheaper and more convenient than repeatedly managing external drives. |
Microsoft’s laptop buying guidance puts the range at 256 GB to 1 TB or more for buyers planning to save many photos, movies or games locally. That range is intentionally wide: the amount of content you retain, rather than the label “everyday,” determines where you belong in it.

Why Windows 11’s 64 GB requirement is not a recommendation
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements list 64 GB of storage as a minimum. The figure indicates that a device can meet the basic installation requirement; it does not leave a comfortable allowance for applications, personal files, updates, caches or future growth.
A drive that starts near its limit can become difficult to maintain. Updates may need temporary working space, installers may unpack files before replacing older versions and applications can create caches or scratch data. Microsoft says update-space needs vary with the previous Windows version, reusable files, installed applications and the way those applications store data. There is therefore no responsible universal “reserve exactly X GB” rule.
What actually consumes SSD space?
The operating system and built-in software
Windows or macOS, recovery tools, drivers and manufacturer software occupy space before you add anything. The usable capacity shown after setup differs by model, so check the actual device’s storage screen rather than assuming the full advertised number is available for files.

Applications and their working data
App requirements include more than the download size. Adobe’s current Photoshop requirements list 10 GB of available disk space for installation on Windows and specify that additional free space is needed during installation. Photoshop Elements 2026 lists 9 GB for installation and says that downloaded content and temporary files require more. These are examples, not a size rule for every application; check the current requirements for software you consider essential.

Games and launchers
Modern games can be much larger than ordinary productivity applications, and launchers often retain updates, shader caches or optional language packs. Count the games you expect to keep installed at the same time, not just the one you are playing this month. If a game library is a primary use, 1 TB or more is usually easier to live with than constantly uninstalling titles.
Photos, video and offline media
Photos accumulate quietly, while video projects and downloaded movies can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Include originals, exports, project caches and duplicate copies when estimating. Streaming reduces local requirements; offline downloads and a long-term archive increase them.
Downloads, synchronised folders and backups
Downloads folders, email attachments, synchronised cloud folders and local backups are common sources of unexpected growth. Decide which cloud folders must remain available offline and include that entire offline set in your estimate.

How to calculate your own requirement
- Check current usage. Open your computer’s Storage settings and record both used and available space. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, use System Settings → General → Storage.
- List the largest categories. Separate applications, games, photos, video, offline media, documents, downloads and synchronised folders. Sort by size where the operating system allows it.
- Check demanding applications. Read the current vendor requirements for creative tools, virtual machines, development environments and games. Include installation space and any stated temporary or scratch-space requirement.
- Estimate local growth. Add the files you expect to create or download during the computer’s useful life. A computer kept for five years needs a larger growth allowance than one replaced next year.
- Account for maintenance headroom. Leave room for operating-system updates, application updates and temporary files. Because update needs vary by device and software, treat this as a flexible buffer rather than a fixed percentage.
- Choose the next capacity tier. If your estimate is close to a tier boundary, move up. Replacing an internal drive or repeatedly moving files is more disruptive than buying the next larger capacity initially.
Capacity choices by type of everyday user

Student or general home computer
A 512 GB SSD gives a broader margin for office applications, PDFs, photographs, downloaded media and changing projects. It is a sensible default when you do not yet know exactly how your library will grow but do not expect a large game or video archive.
Photographer or media collector
Choose 1 TB or more if you keep a substantial photo or movie collection on the computer. Separate the working library from a backup: an SSD is not a substitute for an independent copy of irreplaceable files.
Video editor or content creator
Project media, preview files, render caches and exports can expand rapidly. Size the internal drive for active projects and working space, then plan separate storage for completed projects and backups. Check the requirements of the editing application and any plug-ins before buying.

When external storage is the better answer
An external SSD can keep the internal drive focused on the operating system, applications and current work while holding photo libraries, video archives, installers or less frequently used games. It is especially useful when the computer has a fixed internal drive or when your media collection grows faster than your hardware budget.
- Check ports and cables. The drive must match the computer’s USB or Thunderbolt connection, and an adapter can affect convenience and performance.
- Plan for portability. A portable drive must be connected whenever its files are needed. Losing or damaging it can make the data unavailable, so maintain another backup for important material.
- Use it for the right workload. Active projects may benefit from fast external storage; a slower device can be adequate for archives that are opened occasionally.
Apple documents installing macOS on an external USB or Thunderbolt drive and using it as a startup disk, with APFS recommended, particularly for SSDs. This is a supported configuration, but it requires the drive to remain connected and involves setup and compatibility considerations. It does not provide the same convenience as having equivalent capacity inside the computer.

Cloud storage can reduce the amount that must remain on the internal SSD. Files can be kept online-only, while automatic optimization downloads local copies when needed. This works best when your internet connection is reliable and you understand which folders are available offline.

Apple’s storage tools describe iCloud optimization and moving large media libraries to an external drive. Microsoft also sells cloud-storage plans whose allowances and eligibility can change, so verify current terms before using a plan’s capacity as part of a long-term hardware decision.
Common sizing mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying to the minimum requirement
Minimum requirements answer “will it install?” rather than “will it remain usable?” Treat Windows 11’s 64 GB figure as a compatibility floor and size for your applications, files and growth.
Counting only the files you have today
Include future photographs, downloads, projects, games and updates. A drive that is adequate on day one can become restrictive long before the computer is ready to replace.
Ignoring temporary space
Installers and creative applications may need additional working room beyond their stated installed size. Adobe’s Photoshop and Photoshop Elements figures illustrate why the available-space requirement matters.
Assuming advertised capacity equals usable capacity
Operating-system files, recovery partitions, preinstalled software and formatting reduce the space available to you. Check the model’s usable capacity after setup.
Using one drive as both library and backup
An internal SSD, external SSD or cloud folder can fail, be lost or be encrypted by malware. Keep an independent backup of important documents and media.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Choose 256 GB only if your local workload is light and cloud or streaming services handle most large files.
- Choose 512 GB for a general-purpose computer with a varied application and document collection.
- Choose 1 TB or more when substantial photos, videos, games or offline media will stay on the computer.
- Check the current requirements of your largest applications, including temporary-space notes.
- Add expected growth and update headroom before selecting a tier.
- Use an external SSD or cloud optimization when archives, rather than active work, drive the capacity requirement.
- Keep a separate backup regardless of the SSD size.
