Budget for the console after local tax, the games and paid online features you actually expect to use, any genuinely needed accessories or storage, and recurring costs over a period you choose. There is no reliable universal add-on total: your game choices, location, internet plan and play habits determine what belongs in the budget.
Build a budget that fits your plans
Use local prices and separate purchase-day spending from costs that recur. Fill in this worksheet for the model you are considering:

Purchase-day budget = console checkout + required setup items + games and optional items you will buy now. Budget over your chosen period = purchase-day budget + the recurring costs for that period. Keep one-time purchases separate from recurring charges so an annual plan or later accessory purchase does not get mistaken for the console’s upfront cost.

Prices and availability vary by country, retailer and date. In the US, Sony announced recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026: PS5 at $649.99, PS5 Digital Edition at $599.99 and PS5 Pro at $899.99. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a promise of a retailer’s checkout total. Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement says the change applies globally, but the listed dollar prices are US recommended prices.

Microsoft announced US Xbox console price increases effective August 1, 2026: $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. The announcement does not provide a complete current US price list by model, so use a live local listing for the exact console you are considering rather than treating the increase as its final price. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement also describes financing and refurbished-console options; check current eligibility, region and full terms with the seller or partner.
Price the games and online features you will use
Games
Start with a shortlist of the titles you expect to play during your chosen period and price those titles in your region. The cost depends on the games, editions, sales and whether you buy digitally or on disc; there is no representative current game-price set here that supports a reliable generic allowance.
A subscription library and buying games individually are different spending patterns, not automatic substitutes. Compare the service’s current catalog and terms with the games you specifically want, including whether you want to keep playing a title if it leaves a library or your subscription ends.
Paid online services
Add a paid plan only if you need its features, such as online multiplayer or access to a subscription catalog. Check the current official price and terms for your country and the exact tier before budgeting; comparable current regional prices are not established here. Do not count a subscription as a mandatory console cost if you will not use its paid features.

Add accessories and storage only when they solve a need
Check the exact package contents before buying anything extra. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X product page lists one controller, an ultra-high-speed HDMI cable and a power cord in the box. An extra controller is relevant if you plan to play local multiplayer or want a spare; a headset is useful if you need voice chat or prefer private audio, but neither is a universal requirement. Storage expansion is conditional, too. It may help if your game library outgrows the console’s usable space and you want to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling titles. Check the console’s exact compatibility requirements and current local price before choosing an expansion; do not assume a card or drive works across models.
When comparing models, account for how you buy games as well as the console price. Xbox Series X has a UHD Blu-ray disc player and native 4K output; Xbox Series S is disc-free and designed for 1440p with the option to upscale to 4K. Those distinctions may affect which model suits your library and display, but they are Xbox-specific and do not constitute a complete cross-platform comparison. Electricity and internet can affect ownership costs, but a credible estimate requires your own circumstances. Electricity depends on hours played, the console’s draw in the relevant use state and your local electricity rate. Internet costs depend on your existing service, usage and whether your connection needs an upgrade. Without those inputs, a generic annual figure would be misleading; use your utility rate, internet bill and expected play habits if you want to estimate them.

Account for tax, delivery and warranty terms
Taxes and delivery charges depend on your location and seller, so use the checkout total rather than a headline price. Warranty and repair coverage also vary by brand, model and jurisdiction. For example, Nintendo of America states that Nintendo systems have a standard 12-month warranty and individually sold games and accessories have a three-month warranty. These terms are specific to Nintendo of America’s stated scope. Nintendo’s warranty support page provides the details.
Sony’s US PS5 warranty covers qualifying defects through repair or replacement at Sony’s option, requires proof of purchase for warranty service and notes that consumer rights vary by state or province. Check the exact terms for your region and keep your proof of purchase. Sony’s US PlayStation warranty page sets out that coverage; it should not be read as a warranty statement for other countries or brands.
Compare consoles on the costs that matter to you
For each model, use the same set of inputs so a low sticker price does not hide costs you will actually incur:

- Checkout price including your local tax and delivery.
- Disc drive or digital-only design, matched to how you expect to buy games.
- Prices of the specific games you want, not a generic game allowance.
- Whether you need a paid online plan and its current local price.
- Included controller and cables, plus any extra gear you genuinely need.
- Storage capacity and the cost of a compatible expansion, if needed.
- Local warranty coverage and the retailer’s return or repair terms.
Financing can change when you pay, not necessarily the underlying purchase cost. Microsoft’s announcement mentions eligible installment plans, financing up to 12 months at 0% APR through partners, trade-in initiatives and certified refurbished consoles advertised up to US$100 off MSRP. These offers are time- and region-sensitive; verify eligibility, availability and the full terms before relying on them in your budget.
