Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a new mini PC running a home router or firewall, 4 GB of RAM is a sensible baseline, while 8 GB is the safer target for most installations. OPNsense lists 3 GB as a minimum for a restricted standard-feature setup, 4 GB as reasonable, and 8 GB as recommended for most use cases. pfSense lists at least 1 GB for third-party hardware, but that is a platform minimum rather than a good target for every configuration. Your final choice depends on the firewall software, enabled packages, connection-state table, and whether the mini PC will run anything else.
The practical RAM answer
RAM requirements are set by the software and workload, not by the words “router” or “mini PC” alone. Use these figures as capacity tiers, keeping minimum figures separate from a purchase recommendation.

| Software or workload | RAM figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| OPNsense, restricted standard features | 3 GB minimum | OPNsense’s minimum for standard features that do not require disk writes; it is not a general heavy-load target. See OPNsense hardware sizing. |
| OPNsense, ordinary home or small-office use | 4 GB reasonable | A practical baseline for standard routing and firewall functions under ordinary loads, according to OPNsense. |
| OPNsense, most use cases | 8 GB recommended | OPNsense’s recommended capacity when buying for general use or allowing room for additional features. |
| pfSense on third-party hardware | At least 1 GB minimum | Netgate’s published platform minimum. Optional packages and large state tables can require more; it should not be treated as a universal buying target. See Netgate’s minimum hardware requirements. |
| High-connection or multi-service appliance | Not stated as one fixed number | Size from the packages, state-table size, user count and other services rather than applying an arbitrary add-on allowance. |
If you are choosing between otherwise similar mini PCs and the memory is replaceable, 8 GB gives more practical headroom than 4 GB. A 16 GB configuration can make sense when the unit will host several services or maintain unusually large connection tables, but the cited vendor guidance does not promise a performance benefit from that amount alone.

What the firewall uses RAM for
The largest predictable consumer is the connection-state table. A state entry records an active or recently active flow so the firewall can apply rules to return traffic without treating every packet as a new connection. OPNsense estimates approximately 1 kB of RAM for each state-table entry. That makes 1,000 entries about 1 MB of table memory, while 100,000 entries would be about 100 MB before accounting for the operating system, firewall processes, caches and packages. These are arithmetic illustrations of the documented per-entry estimate, not a promise that your appliance will use exactly those totals.

State counts rise with busy users, many short-lived connections, peer-to-peer applications, scans, and devices that leave sessions open. Hundreds of thousands of simultaneous or retained states therefore need more memory than a lightly used household network. OPNsense’s sizing page explains this relationship in its current hardware guidance.
pfSense follows the same basic principle. Netgate explains that its default state-table size is calculated from a share of available RAM and uses an estimate of roughly 1 kB per state entry on its official product and hardware information page. The configured table limit is a capacity setting, not evidence that every installation will reach it. See Netgate’s official pfSense hardware and appliance information.
RAM also holds the base operating system, packet-filtering processes, logs and optional services. As a result, subtracting a state-table estimate from the installed capacity does not tell you how much memory remains free. A system with a large theoretical table can still run out of usable memory if packages or other applications consume the remainder.
OPNsense: how to interpret 3 GB, 4 GB and 8 GB
3 GB is a constrained minimum
OPNsense identifies 3 GB as the minimum for standard features that do not need disk writes. “Minimum” means the software can be installed and operated within that narrowly described scope; it does not mean every plugin, traffic pattern or logging configuration will fit comfortably. Treat a 3 GB mini PC as a deliberately limited appliance, especially if its memory cannot be upgraded.

4 GB is the sensible baseline
For a straightforward home router or firewall using standard filtering, DHCP, DNS forwarding and similar core functions, 4 GB is a defensible starting point under OPNsense’s current tiers. It leaves more room for normal operating overhead than the 3 GB minimum, but it is still not a guarantee for heavy proxying, unusually large state tables or multiple add-on services.
8 GB is the safer new purchase
OPNsense recommends 8 GB for most use cases. Choose that capacity when the price difference is modest, when you expect to enable additional services later, or when the mini PC’s memory is soldered and cannot be expanded. The recommendation describes capacity, not a guaranteed throughput, VPN rate or intrusion-prevention performance; CPU, storage and network interfaces remain separate constraints.
pfSense: why the 1 GB minimum needs context
Netgate’s current requirement for pfSense on third-party hardware is at least 1 GB of RAM. This number answers “what is the published minimum for a compatible third-party system?” It does not answer “what capacity should I buy for every home, office or package combination?”
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Netgate specifically cautions that package use and large state tables can increase memory requirements. Older general pfSense guidance also identifies packages such as Snort and ntop as memory-intensive. Because the amount depends on configuration and traffic, there is no supported universal rule such as “add exactly X GB for each package.” Check the documentation for the particular package and monitor the appliance after enabling it.

A 1 GB appliance may be appropriate for a narrowly defined, lightly loaded installation that stays close to the base feature set. If you are buying a new mini PC rather than reusing existing hardware, selecting more memory avoids turning the published minimum into your operating limit. The official minimum-requirements page is the authority for compatibility, while the state-table discussion appears in Netgate’s product and hardware information.
Match RAM to the workload
Start with the features you will actually run. The categories below are planning guidance based on the published vendor tiers and documented memory consumers; they are not performance benchmarks.
| Planned use | Capacity approach | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Basic home routing and firewall rules | 4 GB is a practical OPNsense baseline; pfSense can operate below that in configurations covered by its 1 GB minimum. | Expected state count, logging level and whether the unit will run other services. |
| Most ordinary home or small-office deployments | 8 GB is OPNsense’s recommended target and provides more headroom for growth. | CPU capability, interface quality and storage as separate checks. |
| Large connection tables or many active clients | Favor additional RAM, then estimate state-table demand; no single extra-memory figure is established. | Peak and retained state counts rather than just the number of people in the building. |
| Proxy or captive-portal workloads | Do not rely on the basic-router baseline; OPNsense calls out these workloads in its sizing guidance. | Feature-specific documentation, expected traffic and storage for logs or cache data. |
| Intrusion detection or prevention packages | Allow more than the base minimum; Netgate identifies packages such as Snort as memory-intensive. | The package’s own requirements and observed usage after deployment. |
| Router plus unrelated server applications | Size for the combined workload, not for the firewall alone. | Whether the mini PC has enough memory and CPU for every service at its peak. |
WAN speed by itself does not provide a reliable RAM formula in the cited documentation. Two appliances with the same internet connection can have very different memory needs if one maintains a larger state table or runs additional inspection and portal services.

- Find the expected peak state count in your firewall’s monitoring or status pages, if you have an existing installation.
- Multiply that count by approximately 1 kB to estimate table memory. For example, 50,000 states is roughly 50 MB of state records; 250,000 is roughly 250 MB.
- Do not subtract that number directly from installed RAM. Reserve memory for the operating system, firewall engine, logs, caches and every enabled package.
- Repeat the check during the busiest period, because a quiet daytime snapshot can understate the evening or weekend peak.
This calculation helps identify an obviously undersized design, but it cannot predict total usage or throughput. The per-entry estimate is a sizing aid from OPNsense and Netgate, not an independent benchmark.
Check the mini PC before buying RAM
Firewall documentation tells you how much capacity the software may need; it does not make every memory module electrically or physically compatible. Before ordering a module, identify the exact mini PC model and verify:
- Whether the memory is soldered or installed in a replaceable SO-DIMM slot.
- The memory generation supported by the board, such as DDR3, DDR4 or another specified type.
- The number of slots and whether one slot is already occupied.
- The manufacturer’s maximum capacity and any per-slot limit.
- Form factor, voltage and speed requirements in the service manual or vendor specification.
- Whether installing a larger module affects the warranty or requires a firmware update.
“8GB DDR4 SODIMM laptop RAM” is only a search description, not a universal part recommendation. A module that fits physically can still be the wrong generation or unsupported capacity. If the memory is soldered, select the required capacity when you buy the appliance rather than assuming a later upgrade.

What appliance specifications show
Purpose-built appliances illustrate that shipped RAM varies by model. The official OPNsense DEC677 listing describes a 4 GB DDR3 configuration, while the DEC750 listing describes 8 GB DDR4. Those are product configurations, not independent performance tests or rules that every mini PC should match:

A safe upgrade procedure
If your mini PC supports replaceable memory, use this order so the upgrade is based on compatibility rather than guesswork:
- Record the exact model, board revision and current installed capacity.
- Read the manufacturer’s manual for supported memory generation, form factor, slot count and maximum capacity.
- Choose a module that matches those requirements; do not mix generations such as DDR3 and DDR4.
- Shut down the appliance cleanly, disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s electrostatic-discharge precautions.
- Install the module fully in the slot, reassemble the case and enter the firmware setup to confirm the detected capacity.
- Boot the firewall and verify its system-information page reports the expected RAM.
- Check memory use and state counts under normal and peak traffic before enabling additional packages.
If the firmware reports less memory than expected, power down and reseat the module, then recheck the manual for a capacity or slot limitation. If the firewall becomes unstable only after adding a package, compare usage before and after that package and consult its official requirements instead of assuming the RAM module is defective.
Common sizing mistakes
Buying the minimum as if it were a recommendation
A published minimum establishes a floor for a defined software configuration. It does not include every package, connection pattern or future feature. Keep OPNsense’s 3 GB minimum and pfSense’s 1 GB minimum in that category.
Assuming 8 GB guarantees speed
More RAM prevents some capacity bottlenecks, but it does not guarantee a particular firewall throughput, inspection rate or encrypted-traffic speed. CPU architecture, network-interface quality, storage and software configuration must be evaluated separately.
Choosing RAM from WAN bandwidth alone
Bandwidth does not reveal how many states devices maintain or which services inspect traffic. Use observed or expected connection counts and package requirements instead.
Ignoring the rest of the system
A mini PC used as a firewall may also host monitoring, logging, DNS services or other applications. Those processes compete for the same memory, so size for their combined peak rather than the firewall’s base installation.

A concise buying decision
- For a new OPNsense mini PC running ordinary home routing, choose 4 GB only when the workload is clearly basic and the unit is upgradeable; choose 8 GB when you want normal headroom.
- For pfSense, treat the published 1 GB figure as the minimum compatibility floor. Select more when you expect packages, large state tables or additional services.
- If the appliance is non-upgradeable, buy for the highest credible future workload rather than today’s idle memory use.
- Confirm CPU, storage, network interfaces and RAM compatibility independently; no RAM number substitutes for those checks.
