For a laptop that combines everyday work, gaming and occasional video editing, 16 GB of RAM is the most sensible starting point. Choose 32 GB when regular 4K editing, demanding games or heavy multitasking are part of your routine. The right amount still depends on the applications, footage resolution, game requirements and whether the laptop can be upgraded. Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum is an operating-system floor, not a comfortable target for a modern mixed-use computer.
What the RAM numbers actually mean
Random-access memory (RAM) is the laptop’s short-term workspace. Running programs, browser tabs, project files and game data are loaded into RAM so the processor can access them quickly. When the workload exceeds available memory, the operating system moves some data to storage in a process commonly called paging or swapping. An SSD is much slower than RAM, so this can appear as stutter, delayed application switching and long pauses even when the processor is otherwise capable.

Capacity is only one part of laptop performance. The processor, graphics processor, cooling system, storage speed, video codecs and application settings can all become bottlenecks. Adding RAM cannot make a weak graphics chip render a modern game at a higher frame rate, and it cannot turn an entry-level processor into a fast editing workstation.

Microsoft separately says that a computer used mainly for browsing, documents or streaming should have at least 4 GB, while 8 GB is recommended for longer-term use. Its support guidance notes that 16 GB or more may suit photo and video editing or other high-performance projects. These are broad support recommendations, not guarantees that every current multitasking pattern will feel smooth.

RAM for everyday laptop use
4 GB: an operating-system floor
A 4 GB laptop can meet the Windows 11 minimum, but that figure leaves little headroom after Windows, security software and background services are running. A few browser tabs, a video call and a document may be enough to trigger disk activity. Treat 4 GB as a compatibility floor for a basic or already-owned machine, not as a sensible target for a new laptop.
8 GB: basic work with limited multitasking
Eight gigabytes is Microsoft’s longer-term recommendation for primarily browsing, document work and streaming. It can be adequate for email, office documents, a moderate number of tabs and occasional video calls. The experience depends on the sites and applications involved: web browsers can consume substantial memory when many tabs, extensions or web applications remain open. If you expect to keep a laptop for several years or regularly combine office work with creative software, 8 GB offers less margin than a new purchase usually warrants.
16 GB: the practical new-laptop target
Sixteen gigabytes gives Windows, browsers and everyday applications useful breathing room while leaving capacity for a game or an editing application. It is the most balanced configuration for people who want one laptop for school or work, entertainment and occasional creative projects. A 16 GB specification does not guarantee that every game or editor will run well; it simply avoids making memory the first limitation in many mixed-use situations.

How much RAM gaming needs
Why there is no universal gaming number
Games have different engines, texture sizes, world complexity and stated requirements. The appropriate capacity is therefore title-specific. The available evidence does not establish a current official RAM requirement for any particular named game, so do not treat a generic recommendation as a substitute for the publisher’s system-requirements page.
Use 16 GB as a general starting point
For a general-purpose gaming laptop, 16 GB is a practical starting configuration. It provides room for the game plus Windows, a browser, voice chat, launchers and other ordinary background tasks. Close unnecessary applications when a title is unusually demanding, especially if the game’s recommended specification is higher than the laptop’s installed memory.
When 32 GB is worthwhile
Consider 32 GB if you play demanding modern titles, stream or record gameplay on the same machine, keep many browser tabs open, run mods that increase asset usage, or expect to keep the laptop for a long service life. More RAM can prevent paging when several applications compete for memory, but it does not by itself raise frame rates. The graphics processor, processor speed, cooling and game settings usually determine the frame-rate ceiling.

RAM for video editing
Adobe Premiere on Windows
Adobe’s Premiere requirements page, last updated October 7, 2026 for versions 26.0 through 26.5.2, lists 8 GB as the Windows minimum. It recommends 16 GB for editing HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher-resolution media. The 8 GB figure should be understood as a minimum for launching and supporting the software, not as the recommended capacity for a comfortable workflow.

HD projects with short timelines may work acceptably at 16 GB, particularly when you use proxies and keep other programs closed. A 4K timeline can hold larger frames, more effects and more cached data in memory, making 32 GB a more appropriate target for regular work. Multiple streams, noise reduction, color effects and background encoding can increase pressure further.
Apple silicon laptops
Adobe lists 16 GB of unified memory as its recommendation for Premiere on Apple silicon. That platform-specific figure should not be read as an interchangeable equivalent to a Windows laptop with replaceable DIMMs. Unified memory is shared by the processor and graphics hardware and is selected when the laptop is configured; it is not normally upgraded by installing a later memory module.
Editing factors beyond capacity
- Footage resolution and codec: 4K and higher-resolution media generally require more working room than HD, while highly compressed or processor-intensive codecs can shift the bottleneck to the CPU.
- Timeline complexity: Multicam edits, layered effects and large projects can consume more memory than a short, lightly edited clip.
- Storage: A fast SSD helps when the editor reads media, cache files or a paging file, but it does not replace sufficient RAM.
- Graphics hardware: GPU acceleration can matter more than extra RAM for some effects and exports.
- Cooling: A thin laptop may reduce processor speed under sustained rendering even when it has ample memory.
Choosing between 16 GB and 32 GB
| Consideration | 16 GB | 32 GB |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday browsing, documents and streaming | Comfortable headroom for typical multitasking | More capacity than most basic tasks require |
| General gaming | Practical starting point; verify each game’s recommendation | Useful for demanding games and background recording or streaming |
| HD video editing | Adobe’s Windows recommendation | Extra room for larger projects and simultaneous applications |
| 4K and higher video editing on Windows | May require proxies and tighter multitasking | Adobe’s recommendation of 32 GB or more |
| Apple silicon Premiere | Adobe’s stated unified-memory recommendation | Additional capacity may help heavier projects, but Adobe’s cited recommendation is 16 GB |
| Upgrade planning | Check whether the laptop has an open slot or soldered memory | Check the model’s maximum supported capacity before paying for more |
Choose 16 GB when editing is occasional and most gaming is conventional. Choose 32 GB when 4K editing, demanding games or extensive simultaneous applications are regular rather than exceptional. Neither configuration guarantees a particular frame rate, export time or timeline smoothness without a suitably balanced CPU, GPU, storage and thermal design.
Windows memory and Apple unified memory are different buying decisions
Many Windows laptops use SO-DIMM modules, although some solder memory directly to the motherboard. A laptop may have one removable module, two slots, a partly soldered arrangement or no accessible slot at all. Maximum capacity and supported memory type are model-specific.

Apple silicon laptops use unified memory that is shared across the system. Select the required capacity when buying because a later module upgrade is generally not available. Adobe’s 16 GB recommendation for Apple silicon Premiere is therefore a configuration choice, not a promise that a 16 GB Windows laptop will behave identically.
How to verify whether a laptop can be upgraded
- Identify the exact model: Record the full model number, not only the product family or screen size. Different revisions can have different memory layouts.
- Read the manufacturer’s specifications: Look for installed memory, maximum supported capacity, memory type and whether any slot is available.
- Check the service manual: Confirm whether the memory is soldered, removable or partly soldered and how many slots exist.
- Match the module: If the specifications permit an upgrade, search for a compatible laptop RAM upgrade kit, such as DDR4 SO-DIMM or DDR5 SO-DIMM only when the manufacturer confirms that type.
- Verify the limit before purchase: A laptop can reject a module or recognize less capacity than expected if the model has a lower firmware or motherboard limit.
- Plan the installation: Back up important files, disconnect power and follow the manufacturer’s static-electricity and opening instructions. If the memory is soldered or opening the chassis affects warranty terms, use an authorized service provider.
Do not buy a generic module based only on the laptop’s advertised RAM amount. A machine with 16 GB may have no open slot, while another may use one 16 GB module and permit expansion. The manufacturer’s documentation is the authority for compatibility.

Processor
Video decoding, effects, compilation and some game workloads depend heavily on CPU performance. A 32 GB laptop with a weak processor can be slower than a well-balanced 16 GB model for a light editing project.
Graphics processor
Gaming resolution, visual-quality settings and GPU-accelerated editing effects are constrained by the graphics processor. More system RAM cannot compensate for insufficient graphics memory or a low-power GPU.
Best Value
- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

Cooling and sustained power
Short benchmark bursts do not describe a long export or extended gaming session. Thin systems may reduce clock speeds as heat builds. Check the laptop’s cooling design and sustained-performance reviews alongside its memory capacity.
Storage and project space
Video projects, source footage and cache files need substantial SSD space. A fast, adequately sized SSD improves loading and media handling, while insufficient free space can create problems even when RAM capacity is appropriate.
A practical buying checklist
- Mostly everyday use: Prefer 16 GB for a new Windows laptop; 8 GB can suit basic use when the budget is tight and the workload is light.
- Everyday use plus gaming: Start at 16 GB and compare the official requirements for the games you actually play.
- Occasional HD editing: Choose 16 GB, then prioritize a capable processor, GPU, cooling system and fast SSD.
- Regular 4K editing: Target 32 GB or more on Windows in line with Adobe’s Premiere recommendation.
- Gaming while streaming, recording or multitasking: Favor 32 GB if the additional capacity fits the budget and the laptop’s other components are strong enough.
- Apple silicon: Select unified memory at purchase; do not assume a future RAM upgrade is possible.
- Any upgrade plan: Confirm the exact model’s slots, memory type and maximum capacity before ordering a module.
Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing minimum requirements with recommendations
Windows 11’s 4 GB minimum and Premiere’s 8 GB Windows minimum describe the ability to meet baseline software requirements. They do not describe a comfortable gaming or editing configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Assuming every game needs the same amount
Game requirements vary. Use the publisher’s current information for each title and account for the programs you keep open in the background.
Paying for RAM while ignoring the GPU or CPU
A higher memory number cannot fix a graphics bottleneck, weak cooling or an underpowered processor. Compare the complete configuration.
Buying an incompatible upgrade
Soldered memory, unavailable slots and model-specific limits are common reasons an apparently suitable module cannot be installed. Verify service documentation first.
Bottom line for most buyers
Sixteen gigabytes is the sensible baseline for a new laptop expected to handle everyday work, gaming and occasional editing. Move to 32 GB when 4K projects, demanding games or heavy concurrent applications are routine. Use official game requirements and the laptop manufacturer’s service information to refine that choice, and remember that RAM works best when the processor, graphics, cooling and storage are matched to the same workload.
