How Much RAM Do You Need in a Laptop for AI Features, Multitasking, and Creative Work?

For most new laptops, 16GB of RAM is the practical target. It gives everyday multitasking—office apps, video calls, and many browser tabs—more headroom than 8GB. Choose 32GB or more when you regularly edit 4K video, handle large creative projects, or run several demanding applications together. An 8GB laptop can still suit light browsing, writing, and streaming, but it leaves less room for multitasking and future software demands.

Do not confuse a minimum requirement with a comfortable buying recommendation. Windows 11 can install with 4GB, while a Copilot+ PC requires at least 16GB plus other hardware. Software requirements from Adobe point to 16GB for HD creative work and 32GB or more for 4K projects.

Browsing, writing, streaming 8GB can work; 16GB is more comfortable Tom’s Guide’s October 8, 2026 Windows-laptop guidance describes 8GB as workable for light use but more limiting when multitasking.
Office apps, browser tabs, calls, everyday multitasking 16GB Tom’s Guide calls 16GB a sensible target for most new Windows laptop buyers. This is consumer guidance, not a universal benchmark.
Copilot+ PC features At least 16GB, plus the other required hardware Microsoft lists 16GB as a Copilot+ minimum. NPU capability, storage and other requirements also determine eligibility.
Photoshop and HD video editing 16GB or more Adobe recommends 16GB or more for Photoshop and 16GB for HD media in Premiere Pro.
4K editing, large projects, demanding creative multitasking 32GB or more Adobe recommends 32GB or more for 4K-and-higher media in Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements.

These are capacity decisions, not performance test results. A faster processor, SSD, cooling system, graphics processor and application settings also affect how a laptop feels, but the cited sources do not establish a benchmark comparing otherwise identical memory configurations.

What RAM does in a laptop

RAM is the laptop’s short-term working space. The operating system, open applications, browser tabs, project files and background services occupy it while you work. When the active workload no longer fits comfortably, the system can move less-active data to storage. That preserves compatibility but is slower than keeping the data in RAM, so a machine with more capacity generally has more room to keep several tasks active at once.

Capacity is different from memory speed. A laptop can have fast memory but still run out of space when a large project and many applications are open. Conversely, more capacity does not by itself make every application calculate faster. Use the workload recommendations as a way to avoid capacity pressure; evaluate processor, graphics hardware, storage and display separately for the type of work you do.

Minimum requirements are not buying recommendations

Windows 11’s 4GB floor

Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements page, accessed October 13, 2026, states: “Memory: 4 gigabytes (GB) or greater.” That figure is the minimum memory requirement to install or upgrade the operating system. Microsoft also notes that individual features can require more than the operating-system minimum.

A 4GB machine may therefore satisfy an installation check without providing useful headroom for modern multitasking. Treat it as a compatibility floor for Windows 11, not as a sensible specification for a new general-purpose laptop.

Why 8GB is a constrained option

Eight gigabytes can serve a light routine: a modest number of browser tabs, document editing, email, streaming and occasional video calls. The margin shrinks when you keep many tabs open, switch among several office applications, run a meeting client while sharing a screen, or leave background utilities active. Tom’s Guide’s October 8, 2026 guidance places 8GB in the light-use category and identifies multitasking as the point where it becomes more limiting.

If the laptop is inexpensive, the memory is permanently installed, and you expect to keep it for years, the lower starting capacity is harder to correct later. For that reason, 8GB makes sense mainly when the workload is genuinely light and the price or size constraint is decisive.

How much RAM for everyday multitasking?

Choose 16GB for a general-purpose laptop

Sixteen gigabytes is the balanced default for a new Windows laptop used for a mixture of browser tabs, office documents, cloud applications, video calls, light photo work and media playback. It is not a guarantee that every application will be fast, but it provides a larger working margin than 8GB for the combination most people describe as “multitasking.”

When 32GB helps even outside creative software

Consider 32GB when your everyday workload includes several resource-heavy tools at once: large spreadsheets, multiple virtualized or containerized environments, extensive browser sessions, local development tools, communications software and an active media editor. The supplied sources do not define a universal “number of tabs” threshold, so a precise tab count would be misleading. The useful question is whether you regularly keep demanding programs open simultaneously.

RAM for Photoshop and video editing

Photoshop

Adobe lists 8GB as Photoshop’s minimum and 16GB or more as recommended. The minimum can establish that the application is supported, but image dimensions, layer count, smart objects, filters and other open applications determine how much working space a real project consumes. If Photoshop is an occasional tool alongside normal office work, 16GB is the more appropriate laptop target.

Premiere Pro

Adobe’s current Premiere Pro requirements specify 8GB as the standard minimum, 16GB for HD media and 32GB or more for 4K and higher media. These are Adobe’s stated requirements, not a promise of a particular timeline playback frame rate or export time.

Premiere Elements 2027

Adobe’s Premiere Elements 2027 requirements recommend 16GB for HD media and 32GB or more for 4K media. The same distinction applies: the recommendation identifies a memory level for the media class, while codec complexity, effects, storage speed, graphics hardware and project size still influence the experience.

RAM and laptop AI features

What 16GB means for Copilot+ PC status

Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications page says devices with fewer than 16GB of RAM are not Copilot+ PCs. In other words, 16GB is a necessary memory threshold for that category, not the only requirement. A qualifying system also needs the required neural processing unit (NPU), storage configuration and other platform capabilities. RAM alone cannot establish Copilot+ eligibility.

If a specification sheet advertises 16GB but omits the processor’s NPU or the other Copilot+ criteria, do not assume the label applies. Check the complete manufacturer configuration and Microsoft’s current requirements for the exact model.

Local AI workloads outside the Copilot+ label

Microsoft distinguishes the Copilot+ category from compatible first- and third-party local AI workloads. A laptop with less than 16GB is not a Copilot+ PC, but it may still run some compatible local AI software. Compatibility and practical usability depend on that application’s own requirements and the laptop’s processor, graphics hardware, storage and memory arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a laptop purchased specifically for current and emerging AI features, 16GB is therefore the sensible starting point, while 32GB gives more room for AI software running alongside creative tools or other demanding applications. The cited material does not provide a universal RAM figure for every local AI model or application, so avoid treating 32GB as a mandatory requirement for all AI use.

Shared, soldered and upgradeable memory

Capacity is only part of the decision. Laptop memory can be soldered to the motherboard, installed in replaceable modules, or shared between the CPU and integrated graphics. These designs affect how much memory applications can access and whether you can add more later.

Before you buy

  • Read the exact model and configuration, not just the product family name.
  • Confirm whether the memory is soldered, socketed, or a combination of both.
  • Check the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity and whether an empty slot exists.
  • For shared or unified memory designs, verify how the platform allocates memory between system tasks and graphics.
  • Check whether opening the chassis affects warranty service in your region.

The available evidence does not establish upgradeability for any particular laptop. Do not assume that a laptop advertised with 8GB can be upgraded to 16GB, or that a 16GB model can reach 32GB, without the exact manufacturer specification.

A practical decision process

  1. List your heaviest simultaneous tasks. Write down the applications you keep open together, not only the program you launch most often.
  2. Classify your media. If you edit video, distinguish HD from 4K or higher. Adobe’s recommendations change at that boundary.
  3. Decide whether Copilot+ status matters. If it does, require at least 16GB and verify the NPU, storage and remaining criteria.
  4. Choose a capacity tier. Select 8GB only for constrained light use, 16GB for general-purpose work and HD creative tasks, or 32GB and above for 4K and heavier concurrent workloads.
  5. Check the memory layout. Confirm soldered, shared or replaceable memory before relying on a future upgrade.
  6. Validate the complete system. Match the processor, graphics capability, SSD and cooling to the software; RAM cannot compensate for an unsuitable platform elsewhere.

Upgrade planning and troubleshooting

If the laptop feels constrained

  • Check the exact memory capacity reported by the operating system and whether the graphics system reserves part of it.
  • Close unused applications and browser sessions, then observe whether the problem is tied to one unusually large project.
  • Compare your workload with the software maker’s minimum and recommended figures; use the recommendation, not the minimum, as the target for ongoing work.
  • If memory is replaceable, verify the supported type, module count and maximum capacity before purchasing an upgrade.
  • If memory is soldered, an upgrade may not be possible; plan replacement around the capacity you need from the start.

What more RAM will not fix

Additional capacity will not automatically resolve a weak processor, insufficient graphics performance, a slow or nearly full storage drive, thermal throttling, application bugs or an unsupported codec. It also cannot turn an otherwise ineligible laptop into a Copilot+ PC without the required NPU and other hardware.

Example buying choices

Your pattern Recommended starting point Reason
Writing, email, streaming and occasional calls 8GB if budget-constrained; otherwise 16GB 8GB can handle light use, while 16GB adds multitasking headroom.
Work, study, many tabs and regular video meetings 16GB This matches the general-purpose target cited by Tom’s Guide.
Photoshop plus office and communication apps 16GB or more Adobe recommends 16GB or more for Photoshop.
HD video editing 16GB Adobe recommends 16GB for HD media in Premiere Pro and Premiere Elements 2027.
4K editing or large creative projects 32GB or more Adobe recommends 32GB or more for 4K media.
AI features alongside demanding creative multitasking 32GB when affordable; at least 16GB for Copilot+ eligibility Sixteen gigabytes is the Copilot+ memory threshold, while 32GB provides more concurrent-workload headroom.

Bottom line for different buyers

Buy 16GB when you want one laptop for ordinary work, multitasking, Photoshop or HD editing. Buy 32GB or more when 4K video, large creative projects or several demanding applications are routine. Choose 8GB only when your use is light and the lower price or a particular form factor outweighs the reduced margin. Treat Windows 11’s 4GB figure as an installation minimum, and remember that Copilot+ status requires 16GB plus the rest of Microsoft’s hardware criteria.
