There is no single RAM capacity that guarantees a good experience for gaming, streaming, and work. The right amount depends on the game or applications, whether they run at the same time, your editing resolution, and whether your computer can be upgraded. As practical reference points, 16 GB is used for HD editing and is recommended by one game example, while Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher video work on Windows. Microsoft’s 4 GB Windows 11 requirement is only an operating-system floor, not a sensible target for modern combined workloads.
What RAM capacity actually determines
RAM is the computer’s short-term working space for the operating system, applications, game data, browser tabs, project files and background services that are active at once. Capacity is measured in gigabytes (GB). When several demanding programs compete for that space, the computer has less room to keep active data immediately available.

Capacity is only one part of performance. Processor speed, graphics hardware, storage, cooling, software settings and network quality can each become the limiting factor. More RAM does not automatically raise game frame rates or make every export finish faster, and RAM is not the same thing as graphics memory (VRAM). A graphics card uses VRAM for textures, frame buffers and other graphics data; system RAM cannot be treated as a substitute for insufficient VRAM.
Minimum requirements and recommended capacities answer different questions. A minimum means the software is expected to install or launch under defined conditions. A recommendation is a more practical target for a specified workload. Neither number is a universal buying rule for every game, stream or profession.

Published RAM figures you can use as anchors
| Source and workload | Minimum or baseline | Recommended capacity | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Windows 11 | 4 GB or greater | Minimum memory requirement for installing or upgrading Windows 11; it is not a target for gaming, streaming or simultaneous work. | |
| Adobe Premiere 26.0 on Windows | 8 GB | 16 GB for HD media; 32 GB or more for 4K and higher | Adobe’s stated technical requirements, last updated January 21, 2026. |
| Adobe Premiere 26.0 on Apple silicon | 16 GB unified memory | Apple silicon uses a unified-memory specification rather than the Windows DIMM figures. | |
| One game covered by Capcom’s Steam FAQ | 8 GB | 16 GB | Requirements published June 4, 2025 for that particular game; they do not describe all games. |
These figures come from software vendors, not from a standardized test that compares every workload. Use them to frame a decision, then check the exact title, application version, operating system and computer model you plan to use.
Gaming: start with the game’s own requirement
Playing one game by itself
Look up the game’s current system requirements before choosing memory. The Capcom Steam FAQ dated June 4, 2025 gives one concrete example: 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. That is useful evidence for that title, but turning it into a rule for every modern game would be misleading. Different engines, maps, texture settings, launchers and anti-cheat tools can have different footprints.
A minimum figure should be treated as a starting compatibility check. It does not promise that high settings, a busy multiplayer scene or a clean background environment will feel the same as the developer’s recommended configuration. If a game lists a higher recommendation, follow that number instead of relying on a general 16 GB assumption.

A game rarely runs alone on a typical desktop. A browser with many tabs, voice chat, a launcher, hardware-monitoring utilities and recording software may all remain active. The relevant question becomes the combined working set, not the game’s standalone requirement. Adobe’s FAQ gives the same concurrency principle for creative users: “16GB of RAM is a good baseline if you plan to run multiple applications simultaneously.” That statement is a baseline, not a guarantee for every combination.

To choose responsibly, list what you keep open during a normal session and identify the heaviest application. A game that recommends 16 GB may leave less headroom when a browser, chat client and capture software are also running. Conversely, adding memory will not solve a graphics-card, processor, storage or network bottleneck.
Streaming: why there is no universal RAM number
OBS Project’s official system-requirements article, dated August 25, 2021, does not publish one universal RAM recommendation. It explains that CPU requirements vary with the encoder, output resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and warns that basic system compatibility does not guarantee successful streaming or recording.
Streaming on the gaming computer
When the same computer runs the game, OBS, browser sources, alerts, chat tools and other services, capacity must cover all of them at once. Your game’s requirement is still relevant, but it is only one component of the total. Complex scenes with multiple browser sources can add software overhead; the encoder choice and output settings also affect processor and graphics workloads. Do not claim that a particular RAM amount alone ensures a smooth stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing a separate streaming machine
A second computer can move encoding and scene-management work away from the gaming system, but each machine still needs to meet the requirements of its own software and operating system. The gaming computer must handle the game and capture path; the streaming computer must handle OBS, its scenes, sources and encoder. RAM should therefore be selected per machine rather than added as a blanket number for the whole setup.

What to check when a stream struggles
- Confirm the game, OBS version, encoder, output resolution and frame rate you are using.
- Check whether the problem is a memory shortage or a CPU, GPU, capture-device, storage or network limit.
- Reduce unnecessary browser sources and background applications before buying parts.
- Use OBS statistics and your operating system’s resource monitor to identify dropped frames, encoder overload or memory pressure separately.
Work and creative applications
Office, research and browser-heavy work
Light documents, email and a modest number of browser tabs are less demanding than a large creative project, but multitasking changes the calculation. Keep your operating system, browser, communication tools and work applications in the same inventory. If you routinely switch among several substantial programs, Adobe’s 16 GB simultaneous-application baseline is a useful reference even when video editing is not your primary job.
HD video editing
Adobe Premiere 26.0 lists 8 GB as the Windows minimum and 16 GB for HD media. The 16 GB figure is therefore a named application recommendation for HD work, not a promise that every codec, effect stack, multicamera timeline or background application will behave identically. Check the version of Premiere you intend to run because requirements can change.
4K and higher-resolution editing
For Premiere 26.0 on Windows, Adobe recommends 32 GB or more for 4K and higher. This is the clearest published capacity target in the available guidance for a demanding creative workload. It still does not replace checking processor, GPU, storage throughput, project codecs and other application requirements.

Apple silicon and unified memory
Adobe’s macOS table specifies 16 GB of unified memory recommended for Apple silicon. Unified memory is shared by the processor and graphics components, so it should not be compared as if it were a separately installed Windows RAM kit. Treat the computer’s memory configuration as a purchase-time decision and verify the exact model before assuming that a later module upgrade is possible.

A decision process for choosing your capacity
- Name the heaviest application. Identify the game, editor, virtual machine or other program that sets the highest requirement. Read its current minimum and recommended specifications.
- Write down simultaneous tasks. Include the operating system, browser tabs, chat, launchers, recording or streaming software, project utilities and anything that runs automatically.
- Separate resolution and quality targets. HD editing and 4K editing are different workloads. Streaming at one resolution and frame rate is not equivalent to another configuration.
- Use a published recommendation where one exists. For example, Premiere 26.0 provides 16 GB for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K and higher on Windows. For a game, use that game’s own requirement rather than borrowing another title’s number.
- Measure your current system during the real task. In Windows, open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc, select the Performance tab and choose Memory. In macOS, open Activity Monitor and select the Memory tab. Reproduce your normal game, stream or project session and note whether memory pressure or another resource is the constraint. - Check the platform before ordering parts. Verify memory generation, module form factor, supported maximum capacity, available slots and whether the laptop or desktop is upgradeable. A kit that fits one system may be electrically or physically incompatible with another.
- Allow headroom for the way you actually work. If you regularly run several demanding applications, choose the higher capacity supported by the computer rather than matching only a minimum launch requirement.
Upgrade checks for desktops and laptops
For a conventional upgradeable PC, consult the manufacturer’s service manual or motherboard documentation. Confirm whether the system uses the expected memory generation, whether modules must be installed in matched pairs, the maximum supported total and the number of free slots. Firmware limits, existing module sizes and laptop-specific soldered memory can change what is possible.
Do not buy solely from a capacity label. A compatible RAM upgrade kit or laptop module is a product path, not a universal model recommendation. Match the exact system specification, and remember that adding capacity cannot correct a weak GPU, an overloaded processor, slow storage or a network problem.
Apple silicon systems use unified memory and follow a different configuration model. Adobe’s 16 GB recommendation applies to the specified Premiere environment; it does not mean a user can install a generic DIMM later. Verify the exact Apple silicon model and memory option before purchase.

Symptoms of insufficient memory and sensible fixes
When applications slow or reload
Frequent application pauses, browser-tab reloads or project interruptions while several programs are open can indicate memory pressure, but they are not proof by themselves. Check the operating system’s memory view while reproducing the problem. Close unused applications and browser tabs, disable unnecessary background launchers and retest. If the system remains under pressure during the workload you actually need, compare its upgrade options with the application’s recommendation.

When streaming drops frames
Dropped frames or encoder warnings can originate in the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, GPU, capture path or network. OBS’s guidance explicitly treats these variables as important, so adding RAM without identifying the cause may not help. Simplify scenes and test a lower output setting as a diagnostic, then address the resource that the monitoring tools identify.
When games perform poorly
Low frame rates, stutter or long loads are not automatically memory-capacity problems. Compare the game’s requirement with your installed RAM, but also check GPU memory, processor load, graphics settings, storage and thermals. More system RAM should not be presented as an automatic frame-rate upgrade.
Practical capacity guidance
- Use 4 GB only as an operating-system floor: Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirement describes installation or upgrade eligibility, not a modern gaming, streaming or work target.
- Treat 8 GB as a named minimum, not a universal recommendation: Adobe lists 8 GB minimum for Premiere 26.0 on Windows, and Capcom lists 8 GB minimum for one specific game.
- Consider 16 GB a useful reference for moderate combined use: Adobe recommends it for HD media and describes it as a good baseline for running multiple applications; the cited game example also recommends 16 GB.
- Choose 32 GB or more for Premiere 26.0 4K-and-higher work on Windows: This is Adobe’s stated recommendation for that workload.
- For streaming, size the whole setup: OBS provides no single RAM target; account for the game, encoder, resolution, frame rate, scenes and whether another computer shares the work.
