For a new general-purpose laptop or desktop, 16 GB is the most balanced target when your budget allows. An 8 GB computer can work for light use, while creative 4K workloads and heavy multitasking can justify 32 GB or more. Gaming needs depend on the individual games and what else you run at the same time.

How much RAM do you need? The short answer

RAM capacity should match your workload, not simply the operating system on the box. Use this as a buying guide:

Use case RAM guidance Qualification
Windows 11 minimum 4 GB or greater This is an operating-system eligibility floor, not a comfortable buying target. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements.
Light browsing, documents and online video 8 GB can be a budget choice Microsoft says at least 4 GB covers these activities and recommends 8 GB for keeping a device running long term. Actual experience varies with apps and multitasking; see Microsoft’s memory guidance.
New general-purpose laptop or desktop 16 GB is a sensible target This is a practical recommendation based on Microsoft’s workload guidance, not a performance guarantee.
Photoshop desktop 8 GB minimum; 16 GB or more recommended Adobe’s requirement applies to Photoshop 27.x and later; see the Photoshop technical requirements.
HD media editing in Photoshop or Premiere Elements 2027 16 GB recommended Adobe lists this as its recommended capacity for HD media in the 2027 edition.
4K media editing in Photoshop or Premiere Elements 2027 32 GB or more recommended Adobe’s 2027 specifications attach this recommendation to 4K media; see Adobe’s Elements 2027 specifications.
Gaming PC 16 GB is a practical starting point; 32 GB gives more multitasking headroom Check each game’s current system requirements. Capacity alone does not promise a higher frame rate.

Why the Windows 11 minimum is not a buying recommendation

Microsoft lists 4 GB or greater as the memory requirement for Windows 11. That number answers whether a computer meets the operating system’s stated hardware floor; it does not describe how much memory feels comfortable after you open a browser, office applications, cloud-sync software and other programs.

Microsoft’s consumer guidance separates those questions. It says at least 4 GB can cover web browsing, documents or online video, recommends 8 GB to keep a device running long term, and identifies 16 GB or more for photo/video editing and projects needing high performance. Microsoft Support states: “8 GB of memory is recommended to keep your device running long term.” These are broad workload recommendations, and Microsoft does not present them as a laptop-versus-desktop performance test.

Consequently, a new computer with only 4 GB may technically satisfy Windows 11 while leaving little room for your applications. Treat 4 GB as an eligibility check, 8 GB as a light-use or budget level, and 16 GB as the more useful starting point for a new everyday machine.

Choosing RAM for everyday laptops and desktops

8 GB: workable for light use and lower-cost systems

Eight gigabytes is reasonable when your routine consists mainly of documents, email, a moderate number of browser tabs and online video. It also aligns with Microsoft’s long-term consumer recommendation. The limitation is headroom: opening several demanding applications together, handling large files or keeping many browser tabs active can consume that capacity more quickly than a simple single-task test suggests.

Choose 8 GB deliberately when the computer is inexpensive, the workload is modest, and the device cannot be upgraded or you accept a shorter useful life. Do not confuse “runs Windows” with “has enough room for everything you plan to do.”

16 GB: the balanced target for a new general-purpose PC

Sixteen gigabytes is a sensible target for a new laptop or desktop used for mixed work, study, communication, media consumption and occasional demanding applications. It provides more working space for multitasking than an 8 GB configuration without requiring you to buy the capacity intended for specialized 4K production.

This recommendation is an editorial synthesis of Microsoft’s 8 GB and 16 GB workload guidance, not a claim that every 16 GB computer performs identically. Processor speed, storage, graphics hardware, cooling and software optimization still influence responsiveness.

More than 16 GB: buy for a defined workload

Capacities above 16 GB make sense when your applications and files routinely demand them: large photo projects, high-resolution video, virtual machines, development environments, or gaming alongside other demanding programs. The useful question is not whether a larger number sounds faster, but whether your workload needs the additional workspace and whether the computer supports it.

Photo and video editing: follow the application and media resolution

Creative software publishes more specific guidance than a general operating-system requirement. Adobe’s Photoshop desktop requirements for version 27.x and later list 8 GB as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended. The minimum allows the application to meet its stated requirement; the recommendation is the more appropriate target for regular editing.

Media resolution changes the recommendation. Adobe’s Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2027 specifications recommend 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K media. Keep the application and version attached to those figures: they are not universal requirements for every photo editor or video program.

How to apply those numbers

  • For occasional photo adjustments, 8 GB may meet Photoshop’s minimum, but 16 GB better matches Adobe’s recommendation.
  • For HD projects in Photoshop or Premiere Elements 2027, plan around 16 GB.
  • For 4K projects in those Elements applications, start at 32 GB or more, then check the rest of the application’s requirements.
  • If you use several creative applications simultaneously, include that multitasking in your capacity decision rather than relying on the minimum for one application.

These figures are published requirements and recommendations, not independent benchmarks. They do not establish a specific export-time improvement from adding RAM.

Gaming PC RAM: 16 GB is a starting point, not a universal rule

There is no single RAM number that applies to every PC game. Each title can set its own minimum and recommended configuration, and those requirements can change with updates. Check the current system-requirements page for the games you actually play before choosing parts.

For a general gaming build, 16 GB is a practical starting point. It leaves a reasonable amount of capacity for the game and ordinary background software. A 32 GB configuration is a higher-headroom choice when you stream, record, keep many browser tabs open, run voice or creative tools, or otherwise game while using other demanding applications.

More RAM by itself does not guarantee higher frame rates. Frame rate also depends on the processor, graphics card, game settings, drivers, storage and the game engine. If a particular game’s published requirement is below 16 GB, that does not prove every 16 GB system will deliver the same experience; if it calls for more, follow that title’s requirement.

Questions to answer before buying gaming RAM

  • What are the current minimum and recommended memory figures for your main games?
  • Will you run a browser, streaming or recording software, chat, a launcher, or an editor at the same time?
  • Does the motherboard support the capacity and memory configuration you intend to install?

Laptop versus desktop: capacity is only half the decision

The same workload guidance can apply to both form factors, but upgrade options differ. Many desktops use replaceable memory modules, while some laptops have memory soldered to the motherboard or provide only limited expansion. A 16 GB laptop may therefore be a better long-term choice than an 8 GB model if neither can be upgraded, even when both meet an application’s minimum.

Do not assume that a category description such as “16GB RAM kit” fits every computer. Memory generation and type, physical form factor, supported capacity and the motherboard’s configuration all matter. A desktop module and a laptop module are not interchangeable simply because their capacities match.

  • Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest Intel DDR5 motherboards
  1. Record the exact model. For a laptop, use the manufacturer’s full model identifier, including its generation or configuration. For a desktop, identify the motherboard model.
  2. Check whether memory is replaceable. Confirm whether the RAM is soldered, installed in accessible slots, or limited by the machine’s design. Some systems cannot be upgraded.
  3. Match the memory generation and type. The replacement must use the standard supported by the laptop or motherboard; capacity alone is not enough.
  4. Match the physical form factor. Laptop and desktop modules have different physical formats, and the correct capacity in the wrong format will not fit.
  5. Verify the maximum supported capacity and configuration. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the total limit and the permitted arrangement of modules.
  6. Only then choose a kit. A compatible 16 GB kit suits many general upgrades, while a compatible 32 GB kit is relevant for heavier workloads, but neither statement certifies fit for a particular computer.

If the official specification does not clearly confirm upgradeability, pause the purchase and obtain the exact model documentation. Installing an incompatible kit cannot turn an unsupported machine into an upgradable one.

Minimum, recommended and comfortable are different numbers

Software vendors use “minimum” to describe the lowest configuration they support under stated conditions. “Recommended” is a better target for regular work, but it still describes the named application and workload, not every program you might run. A comfortable personal configuration also has to account for multitasking and how long you expect to keep the computer.

  • Minimum: a floor for eligibility or basic operation, such as Windows 11’s 4 GB or Photoshop’s 8 GB requirement.
  • Recommended: the vendor’s preferred capacity for the specified software and media, such as Photoshop’s 16 GB recommendation or Elements 2027’s 32 GB recommendation for 4K media.
  • Practical purchase target: a workload-based decision, with 16 GB fitting many new general-purpose systems and 32 GB reserved for clearly heavier multitasking or creative work.

No published source here supplies a universal statistic for how much RAM people typically use or a quantified speed increase from adding memory. Avoid choosing a capacity based on an invented average or assuming that a larger number automatically accelerates every task.

A simple buying decision

Choose 8 GB when

  • Your work is light browsing, documents, email and online video.
  • You are buying a budget system and accept less room for future applications.
  • The exact model’s upgrade path is known and gives you a realistic later option.

Choose 16 GB when

  • You are buying a new everyday laptop or desktop and want a balanced default.
  • You multitask across office, browser, communication and media applications.
  • You want to meet Adobe’s recommended Photoshop capacity rather than its minimum.
  • You are building a general gaming PC without unusually heavy simultaneous workloads.

Choose 32 GB or more when

  • You edit 4K media in applications whose specifications call for that capacity.
  • You routinely combine gaming with recording, streaming, creative software or other demanding tasks.
  • Your projects are large enough that 16 GB leaves insufficient working space and the computer’s specifications support the upgrade.

Bottom line for each type of computer

For a new everyday laptop or desktop, buy 16 GB if the budget allows; select 8 GB for genuinely light use or a constrained budget. For Photoshop, Adobe’s current guidance is 8 GB minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. For Photoshop or Premiere Elements 2027, use 16 GB for HD media and 32 GB or more for 4K media. For gaming, begin at 16 GB, consider 32 GB when you run other demanding software, and verify the requirements for every major game. Before buying any upgrade, confirm that the exact laptop or motherboard supports the memory’s type, form factor, capacity and configuration.
