For most students buying a new laptop, choose 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. That combination handles browser-heavy research, video calls, office applications, coding classes, statistics software and several years of updates more comfortably than the 8GB/256GB configurations that some universities list only as minimums.

Students in engineering, 3D, media production, machine learning or virtual-machine-heavy courses may need 32GB or more of RAM and a 1TB or larger SSD. Before buying, check your university and major’s required software, operating-system compatibility and any published minimum specification.

What RAM and storage each do

RAM is working space

RAM (random-access memory) is the laptop’s fast, temporary workspace. Your operating system, browser tabs, documents, meetings and specialist applications occupy RAM while they are running. When the workload exceeds available RAM, the system relies more heavily on slower storage, which can make switching applications and editing large files feel sluggish. RAM is measured in gigabytes (GB); it is not the same as the capacity of your files.

Storage holds your files and applications

Storage is where the operating system, applications, downloads and personal files remain when the laptop is turned off. A solid-state drive (SSD) is preferable to an older mechanical hard drive for a student laptop because it provides faster startup and application loading and has no moving disk mechanism. Capacity is also measured in GB or terabytes (TB): 1TB is approximately 1,000GB in manufacturer decimal notation.

#1 Best Overall

Usable capacity is lower than the number printed on the box because the operating system and recovery tools consume space. Leaving headroom matters for updates, temporary files and projects. The University of Saskatchewan advises keeping 40GB free on the drive in its 2026–2027 student guidance (University of Saskatchewan guidance).

The practical configurations by workload

Student use RAM target Storage target Why
Reading, writing, web research, email, video meetings and general productivity 8GB can satisfy some published minimums; 16GB is the stronger choice for a new purchase 256GB can meet some minimums; 512GB gives useful long-term room Multiple university IT pages distinguish minimum specifications from recommendations for several years of use (Saskatchewan, Boston University, Hertfordshire, Denver).
Many browser tabs, introductory programming, statistics, large spreadsheets or moderate media work 16GB minimum; 24GB or 32GB adds headroom 512GB or more The University of Alberta’s enhanced-productivity guidance starts at 16GB and recommends 24GB or 32GB for heavier multitasking (Alberta guidance).
3D rendering, engineering simulations, advanced programming, local machine learning or virtual machines 32GB or more 1TB or more Specialist workloads can keep large datasets, build tools and virtual systems active simultaneously. Alberta and Notre Dame place these tasks in higher configurations (Alberta, Notre Dame Engineering & Science Computing).
Advanced video production 32GB may be required 512GB minimum in Boston University’s advanced-video guidance; 1TB is more comfortable for active media libraries Video source files and caches grow quickly, and Boston University specifically identifies 32GB for advanced video production (Boston University recommendations).

These are institutional recommendations tied to particular courses and software, not a universal industry standard or a population study. They indicate sensible buying ranges, not a guarantee that every application will run well.

What universities currently publish

Institution and scope Published minimum or general tier Higher or preferred tier Important qualification
University of Saskatchewan, 2026–2027 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD for Windows and Mac laptops 16GB RAM and 512GB or greater SSD for four-year use The minimum is guaranteed only for the current academic year. Boston University 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD 16GB or 32GB RAM; 32GB required for advanced video production; 512GB or more SSD for that work Recommendations vary with the student’s production workload (source).
University of Hertfordshire, guidance dated 7 October 2026 At least 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD for most students 16GB RAM is described as a better long-term choice; specialist software guidance calls for 16GB RAM and at least 256GB SSD Students have OneDrive access, reducing the need to keep every document locally. The guide says, “For a better long-term experience, consider 16GB RAM and an Intel i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor” (Ask Herts guide).
University of Alberta 16GB RAM and 256GB or greater SSD for general undergraduate use Enhanced productivity: 16GB minimum, 24GB or 32GB recommended, 512GB or greater SSD. Specialized: 32GB or more and 1TB or greater The tiers correspond to progressively more demanding software and multitasking (source).
Notre Dame Engineering & Science Computing, Fall 2026 Windows laptop with at least 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD 32GB or more RAM and 1TB preferred; Mac laptops are advised at 24GB RAM Many required applications may not be available for macOS, and some engineering programs require Windows or offer fuller features there (source).
University of Denver, 2026–2027 undergraduate guidance 8GB RAM and 256GB storage 16GB RAM and 512GB or more for a new purchase Students should still review program-specific requirements. Denver lists a removable USB storage device as a useful accessory, including for encryption (source).

How to choose the right specification

1. Start with your major’s software list

Look up the department’s current laptop page before comparing models. Engineering, architecture, design, film, data science and computer-science courses can require applications with substantially higher memory, graphics or storage needs than essay-based courses. Record the application’s operating-system requirement, minimum RAM, recommended RAM, free-drive-space requirement and whether a school-managed lab or remote desktop is available.

Notre Dame’s engineering and science guidance illustrates why the operating system matters: it recommends Windows because many required applications may not be available on macOS, or may be less fully featured there (Notre Dame guidance). Saskatchewan similarly cautions that some specialized software may not support ARM-based systems (Saskatchewan guidance). A thin ARM laptop can therefore be unsuitable even when its RAM and SSD numbers look adequate.

2. Decide how many years the laptop must last

If you are replacing a laptop every year or two and your courses are light, 8GB and 256GB may be workable. For a new purchase intended to cover a typical four-year degree, 16GB and 512GB is the safer baseline. Saskatchewan explicitly separates its 8GB/256GB current-year minimum from its 16GB/512GB-or-greater four-year recommendation (source). More memory also protects against the gradual increase in browser, operating-system and application demands.

3. Match RAM to the heaviest simultaneous workload

Count what you run at the same time, not just the biggest single application. A research session might include dozens of browser tabs, a PDF reader, a word processor, a video call and a statistics package. Sixteen gigabytes gives that combination more breathing room than 8GB. If you routinely compile large projects, run a local database, keep virtual machines open, edit high-resolution media or train models locally, move to 32GB or more. Alberta places virtual machines, local machine learning, large software builds, simulations and 3D modeling in its specialized 32GB-plus tier (source).

4. Match storage to what must remain local

Estimate the operating system, applications, downloaded course materials, source code, datasets, photos, video, games and backups you will keep on the laptop. A 256GB drive can become cramped after system files and applications are installed. A 512GB SSD leaves substantially more working space for a general student. Choose 1TB or more when your course requires video footage, 3D assets, virtual-machine images, large datasets or multiple development environments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud storage changes the calculation but does not eliminate it. Hertfordshire says students receive OneDrive access, so documents can be kept online or synchronized selectively (source). Cloud files still need local space when marked for offline use, and cloud storage does not replace the local capacity needed by installed applications, caches, virtual machines or active media projects.

5. Check whether RAM and storage can be upgraded

Many thin laptops have memory soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Some allow an SSD replacement but not a RAM upgrade; others seal both components. Confirm the exact model’s service manual before assuming you can buy a cheaper configuration now and expand later. If upgrades are impossible, buying 16GB rather than 8GB, and 512GB rather than 256GB, is especially important for a four-year plan.

When 8GB RAM and 256GB storage still make sense

An 8GB/256GB laptop can be reasonable for web-based coursework, writing, email and video meetings when the budget is tight, the school confirms that required software is cloud-hosted or lab-provided, and the device is not expected to handle demanding media or technical workloads. Several universities publish those numbers as minimums: Saskatchewan, Boston University, Hertfordshire and Denver all do so in some form (Saskatchewan, Boston University, Hertfordshire, Denver). Treat “minimum” literally: it describes a supported starting point, not the most comfortable or future-proof purchase.

When to buy 24GB, 32GB or more

Choose 24GB or 32GB when your course or personal work involves sustained multitasking beyond ordinary office use. Alberta’s enhanced tier recommends 24GB or 32GB, while its specialized tier calls for at least 32GB (source). Notre Dame prefers 32GB or more for engineering and science laptops and advises 24GB for Mac configurations (source). Boston University identifies 32GB as required for advanced video production (source).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pay for 32GB solely because a specification sheet looks better. If your program uses browser apps and ordinary documents, the money may be more useful for a better screen, keyboard, battery, processor or warranty. The justification for 32GB is a demonstrated workload, a stated course requirement or a long replacement cycle in which you cannot upgrade later.

Storage management during college

  • Keep the operating-system drive comfortably below full capacity; Saskatchewan’s guidance calls for 40GB free (source).
  • Use institutional cloud storage for documents that do not need to be permanently offline, while retaining local copies of files needed during travel or unreliable connectivity.
  • Move completed video, photo and project archives to an encrypted external drive or other approved backup. Denver lists removable USB storage as a convenience and encryption aid (source).
  • Keep at least two copies of irreplaceable coursework in separate locations; a laptop’s SSD is not a backup.
  • Check free space before installing large development toolchains, virtual machines or media caches.

A quick buying decision

  1. General degree, new laptop: select 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD.
  2. Light workload, confirmed software support and strict budget: 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD can work, but verify the university’s current minimum and plan your cloud and backup use.
  3. Programming, statistics, large spreadsheets or moderate creative work: keep 16GB RAM and 512GB storage as the floor; choose 24GB or 32GB if you run several demanding tools together.
  4. Engineering, 3D, advanced video, machine learning or virtual machines: start at 32GB RAM and 1TB storage, then follow the department’s exact graphics, processor and operating-system requirements.
  5. Mac versus Windows: choose the platform that runs every required application. Notre Dame and Saskatchewan document cases where macOS or ARM compatibility can limit specialized software (Notre Dame, Saskatchewan).

The strongest general-purpose specification is therefore 16GB of RAM with a 512GB SSD. Move to 32GB and 1TB when your actual coursework demands it, and do not let a low published minimum override the software and lifespan requirements of your degree.
