For Google’s Gemini Intelligence features, the published starting point is 12GB or more of RAM, but RAM alone is not enough. Google also requires a qualified system-on-chip (SoC), advanced on-device AI capability, current media-processing performance, software benchmarks, and device-specific support. For built-in Android AI, the official material reviewed does not establish a universal internal-storage minimum. If you manually run a local large language model (LLM), Qualcomm’s developer guidance rises to 12GB for 3B-plus models and 16GB for 7B-plus or 4,096-token-context models.
Those figures describe different workloads. A Snapdragon phone with 12GB of RAM is not automatically eligible for every AI feature, and a phone with ample storage can still lack the processor, software, region, or language support an AI feature needs.

The practical answer by workload
| Use case | Published memory guidance | What else must be true | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Intelligence on a supported Android phone | 12GB RAM or more | Qualified SoC, advanced on-device AI processing, current media-processing capability, software performance benchmarks, and device support | A published eligibility threshold, not a guarantee for every 12GB Snapdragon phone |
| Built-in Android features using Gemini Nano | No universal consumer RAM figure stated beyond the requirements for the particular feature | AICore support, compatible hardware, operating-system and security criteria, and regional or language availability | Check the exact phone and feature rather than relying on RAM alone |
| Manually deployed 3B-plus local LLM | 12GB memory or more; context length may need adjustment | Compatible Snapdragon platform, Hexagon architecture, supported operating system, and Qualcomm software tools | Developer deployment guidance, not a general phone-buying guarantee |
| Manually deployed 7B-plus or 4,096-context model | 16GB memory or more | The same platform and software compatibility requirements, plus enough working memory for the selected model and context | A scoped Qualcomm AI Hub recommendation for demanding local-model scenarios |
“Memory” in Qualcomm’s tutorial refers to the device’s working memory requirement for those deployment scenarios. It should not be confused with the amount of internal flash storage available for apps and files.

Google’s Android Help documentation, accessed October 13, 2026, lists Gemini Intelligence as currently available on devices with 12GB or more of RAM. The same list requires a qualified SoC, advanced on-device AI processing capabilities, the latest media-processing capabilities, and applicable software performance benchmarks. Google also says individual features can vary by device, country, and language.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
That makes 12GB a screening number, not a complete specification. It answers “Does this phone meet the published memory floor?” It does not answer “Will every Gemini feature work on this exact Snapdragon model?” A manufacturer may ship several phones with the same Snapdragon family but different firmware, cooling, camera pipelines, security configuration, or regional software. Those differences can affect eligibility.
The Android product information gives additional context by referring to on-device Nano models, current media performance, a qualified flagship SoC, quality-in-field performance, and operating-system and security criteria. In other words, Google evaluates a bundle of hardware and software conditions. RAM is one gate in that bundle.
What to verify on a candidate phone
- Exact RAM configuration: Confirm whether the model you are buying has 12GB, rather than assuming every storage variant has the same memory.
- Exact SoC qualification: “Snapdragon” is a product family name, not a blanket certification for Gemini Intelligence.
- On-device AI capability: The phone must expose the hardware and software needed for supported local inference.
- Media performance: Features involving photos, video, audio, or generative editing may depend on current media-processing support.
- Software and security status: Eligibility can depend on the operating-system build, security requirements, and vendor implementation.
- Region and language: A feature listed for one country or language may not appear on the same hardware elsewhere.
Why Snapdragon branding does not settle the question
A Snapdragon phone can perform AI locally, send work to the cloud, or use a mixture of both. Qualcomm describes on-device AI as processing information directly on the phone, which can reduce latency and keep sensitive input local. Cloud processing can support more resource-intensive tasks because the model runs on remote servers. The app or feature determines which path it uses; the chipset name by itself does not.
Recommended Free Tools
Two phones with similar Snapdragon branding can therefore deliver different AI experiences. One may have a qualified neural-processing path and a current operating-system build, while another may lack the required software integration. A feature can also be enabled gradually, restricted by language, or withheld from a particular model even when the raw RAM number looks adequate.

How much storage do built-in AI features need?
No universal internal-storage minimum is established in the official Android and Qualcomm material reviewed for this question. Do not turn the 12GB RAM threshold into a claim that AI requires 12GB, 20GB, or any other fixed amount of phone storage. RAM and storage solve different problems:
- RAM is fast working memory used while the operating system, apps, and models are active.
- Internal storage holds the operating system, applications, photos, videos, downloads, caches, and user files when they are not actively running.
- Model storage is the space occupied by model files. A built-in model may be delivered and maintained by the operating system, while a model installed manually occupies user storage.
Android’s AICore documentation says Gemini Nano runs in the AICore system service, which uses device hardware for inference and manages model distribution and updates. That architecture means an app developer does not have to package a large model in the app or manage its updates. It also means the documentation does not provide a single storage number that applies to every phone.
The practical storage decision is personal rather than an AI-wide minimum. Account for the operating system, the apps you install, your photo and video library, offline media, and any local models you deliberately download. Leave comfortable free space so updates and temporary files can complete, but do not describe a particular capacity as an official AI requirement unless the phone maker publishes one for that exact model.

When storage becomes an AI concern
Storage matters directly when you install models yourself, keep multiple model versions, cache long documents for retrieval, or record large amounts of AI-generated media. Those are user-controlled workloads. The reviewed sources do not quantify the file size of Gemini Nano on each device or the amount of storage a manufacturer reserves for system-managed models, so a precise “AI uses X GB” statement would be unsupported.

RAM guidance for people who run a local LLM
Manually running an LLM is more demanding than using a phone feature that the manufacturer and operating system have already integrated. Qualcomm AI Hub’s on-device deployment tutorial gives two useful reference points for supported Snapdragon targets:
- 3B-plus models: 12GB of memory or more, with the possibility that the context length must be adjusted.
- 7B-plus models or a 4,096-token context length: 16GB of memory or more.
Qualcomm’s quoted guidance is: “16GB memory or more for 7B+ or 4096 context length models.” These are deployment requirements for selected model-size and context scenarios, not a promise that any phone with 16GB RAM can run any 7B model at a useful speed.
Other requirements in the developer workflow
The tutorial also assumes a compatible Hexagon architecture, Android 15 or later (or Windows 11 for the supported target workflow), and the specified Qualcomm SDK and tooling. A phone can meet the memory figure and still fail because its exact platform, operating-system build, drivers, or toolchain is not supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsContext length is especially important. A longer context lets a model consider more text in one request, but it increases memory pressure. If a 3B model fits at a shorter context and becomes unstable at a longer one, reducing the context can be the difference between a working and a failed deployment. Quantization, model format, concurrent apps, and thermal limits also affect real behavior, although the cited tutorial does not turn those variables into a universal consumer specification.

On-device, cloud, and hybrid AI: why the location changes the requirement
On-device processing
The model runs on the phone’s CPU, GPU, or dedicated AI hardware. Benefits can include lower latency, operation when connectivity is poor, and keeping input on the device. The phone must provide enough RAM, compatible acceleration, and software support for the model and feature.
Cloud processing
The phone sends work to a remote service. Local RAM and storage still matter for the app and its operating system, but the largest model computation occurs remotely. A reliable connection, account access, and the service’s availability become more important than fitting a large model locally.
Hybrid processing
Many experiences split tasks: quick or privacy-sensitive steps run locally, while complex generation uses the cloud. In that case, a phone may need enough local capability for the on-device portion without carrying the memory burden of the largest possible model. Read the feature’s description rather than inferring its architecture from the Snapdragon label.

A step-by-step buying check
- Name the feature. Decide whether you mean Gemini Intelligence, a camera enhancement, transcription, an assistant, or a manually installed LLM. “AI” is not one workload.
- Identify where it runs. Look for an explicit on-device, cloud, or hybrid description. Local execution creates stricter memory and compatibility requirements.
- Check RAM on the exact configuration. For Gemini Intelligence, use Google’s 12GB-plus threshold as the first filter. For a local 3B-plus model, use Qualcomm’s 12GB guidance; for a 7B-plus or 4,096-context scenario, start at 16GB.
- Verify the exact Snapdragon platform. Confirm that the SoC and its AI hardware are qualified for the feature or deployment workflow. Do not generalize from another phone using a similarly named chip.
- Confirm software requirements. Check the Android version, security status, vendor software, and any Qualcomm SDK or tooling requirements.
- Check regional and language availability. Google explicitly notes that Gemini Intelligence features vary by device, country, and language.
- Choose storage for your whole usage pattern. Include apps, photos, video, offline files, and any models you will install manually. Treat this as a capacity decision, not an official AI minimum.
- Leave operating room. Keep free space for system updates, app caches, and temporary files. A nearly full phone can fail updates or slow down even when its RAM and AI hardware are suitable.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“12GB means every AI feature will work.”
It does not. Google’s requirement includes the SoC, AI processing, media performance, software benchmarks, and other support conditions. Check the exact device listing and feature availability.

“A Snapdragon chip guarantees on-device AI.”
Snapdragon covers many platforms. The relevant question is whether the specific phone exposes the required hardware, drivers, operating system, and model support.
“AI needs the same number of gigabytes in storage as RAM.”
RAM and storage are different resources. Built-in Gemini Nano distribution is handled by AICore, and the official consumer documentation does not publish a universal storage allocation.
“16GB RAM is enough for any local model.”
Qualcomm’s 16GB figure is scoped to 7B-plus or 4,096-context deployment scenarios. Model format, context, quantization, software compatibility, and other running apps still matter.
“More storage fixes insufficient RAM.”
Storage cannot substitute for working memory. A phone with ample flash capacity can still be unable to load a model or qualify for a feature if it lacks RAM or compatible acceleration.
Choosing between common phone configurations
| Configuration | Likely fit | Questions to resolve before buying |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB RAM | May run ordinary apps and cloud-assisted AI, but it is below Google’s published 12GB Gemini Intelligence threshold | Is the desired feature cloud-based, and does the exact phone list support it? |
| 12GB RAM | Meets the memory portion of Google’s Gemini Intelligence requirement and Qualcomm’s 3B-plus local-model guidance | Is the SoC qualified, is the software current, and is the target model’s context manageable? |
| 16GB RAM | Matches Qualcomm’s guidance for 7B-plus or 4,096-context local-model scenarios | Are the Hexagon architecture, operating system, SDK, drivers, and model format supported? |
| Any RAM level with very limited storage | AI eligibility may still be possible, but day-to-day use can be constrained by apps, media, and updates | How much space will your files and optional model downloads consume? |
Bottom line
Use 12GB RAM as the first checkpoint for Google’s Gemini Intelligence on a Snapdragon phone, not as a universal Android AI rule. For manually deployed local LLMs, Qualcomm’s scoped guidance is 12GB for 3B-plus models and 16GB for 7B-plus or 4,096-context models. There is no substantiated universal internal-storage minimum for built-in phone AI. Choose storage around your apps and media, then verify the exact Snapdragon model, software version, region, language, and feature support.
