How Much Power Does a Data Center Use? Common Questions Answered

There is no single power figure for a data center. A small enterprise facility, a hyperscale cloud campus and an AI site can have radically different electrical demands because their server counts, hardware, utilization, cooling systems and redundancy differ. “Power” is an instantaneous rate measured in megawatts (MW) or gigawatts (GW); the electricity used over a year is energy, measured in megawatt-hours (MWh) or terawatt-hours (TWh).

The most useful current benchmarks are sector totals, not a universal per-building number. The International Energy Agency estimates that data centers worldwide consumed about 415 TWh in 2024. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimates that U.S. data centers consumed 192 TWh in the same year. Those figures cover different geographies and modeling boundaries, so they must not be treated as competing measurements of one market or one facility.

Power, energy and the number a facility actually draws

Power describes how fast electricity is being supplied at a moment in time. A facility might be drawing 20 MW now, 25 MW during a high-compute period and less during maintenance. Energy is the accumulated electricity over an interval: a 20 MW load maintained continuously for one hour consumes 20 MWh.

Annual statistics such as 415 TWh or 192 TWh are therefore not the power draw of a single building. They add up electricity used by many facilities over a year. Converting an annual total into an average equivalent load can help with grid planning, but that average is not a site’s peak demand and does not describe how any individual data center operates.

A facility’s total electrical demand normally includes the information-technology load plus cooling, power conversion, lighting, pumps, controls and other building systems. Operators often separate the IT load from the total facility load so they can track efficiency with power usage effectiveness (PUE).

How much electricity do data centers use?

The table below keeps each estimate’s geography, year and status visible. Historical values are modeled estimates of consumption; future values are scenarios, not measured results.

Scope and source Electricity use Share or qualification
Worldwide, 2024 — International Energy Agency (2025) About 415 TWh About 1.5% of global electricity consumption
United States, 2024 — Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2026) 192 TWh 4.7% of U.S. electricity consumption
Worldwide, 2030 — IEA base case 945 TWh Forecast; outcome depends on deployment, utilization and efficiency
United States, 2030 — Berkeley Lab reference case 649 TWh Forecast; 11.8% of projected U.S. electricity use
United States, 2030 — Berkeley Lab uncertainty range 521–843 TWh Modeled range around the reference case

The global and U.S. 2024 estimates use different models, system boundaries and geographic scopes. Berkeley Lab’s U.S. analysis also excludes cryptocurrency mining. A comparison is meaningful only after checking the geography, year, metric, included facilities and scenario assumptions.

What uses the electricity inside a data center?

Servers are generally the largest load, but the percentages change with facility design and workload. The IEA’s global overview gives the following indicative shares for modern data centers:

System Indicative electricity share Why it varies
Servers Around 60% on average Processor type, accelerator mix, utilization and server generation change the load
Storage About 5% Capacity, drive technology and data-access patterns differ by service
Networking Up to about 5% Traffic volume and network architecture affect consumption
Cooling About 7% in efficient hyperscale sites to over 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities Climate, cooling method, rack density and operating temperature are decisive
Other infrastructure 31% of U.S. data-center electricity in 2024, according to Berkeley Lab Includes cooling and electrical overhead; the national figure is not a universal building breakdown

Uninterruptible power supplies, batteries and backup generators are essential for continuity, but the IEA notes that they are rarely used as active energy sources. Their presence still affects conversion losses, maintenance requirements and the amount of equipment a facility must power or keep ready.

Understanding PUE

PUE is total facility energy divided by IT-equipment energy. A PUE of 1.45 means that a facility uses 1.45 units of electricity for every unit delivered to servers, storage and networking equipment. Lower is generally better, but PUE alone does not show how much useful computing a site performs.

Berkeley Lab reports that the U.S. national-average PUE improved from 1.55 in 2018 to 1.45 in 2024, while infrastructure’s share fell from 36% to 31%. The report attributes the aggregate change primarily to the changing mix of facility types, including a larger share of server energy in facilities with lower PUE. That national trend does not mean every individual center achieved the same improvement.

Why data-center electricity use is growing

Accelerated computing

AI training and inference rely heavily on GPUs, application-specific integrated circuits and other accelerators. These devices can deliver more computations per unit of energy than older general-purpose hardware, but they also increase rack power density and can raise the cooling requirement. Berkeley Lab identifies deployment of GPU- and ASIC-accelerated servers as one driver of the 14% increase in U.S. data-center electricity use from 2023 to 2024.

Demand can outpace efficiency

More efficient chips do not automatically produce lower sector-wide consumption when organizations run many more computations. Berkeley Lab’s 2026 report states: “Although successive generations of computing hardware improve in energy efficiency (in terms of number of computations performed per unit of energy), the scale and growth of computational demand more than offset these efficiency gains, leading to continued increases in absolute electricity consumption.”

Non-AI services still matter

Cloud applications, enterprise software, web services, storage, video, communications and conventional server workloads continue to consume electricity. AI is an important growth factor, not an explanation for every watt used by the sector. A site’s mix of ordinary servers, accelerators, storage and networking determines its actual load.

What determines the power draw of one data center?

Facility size and build-out

A building’s electrical service may be designed for a future server population that has not yet been installed. A partially occupied hall can therefore have a much lower operating load than its utility connection suggests. Campus-scale sites may contain several independently operated buildings with different utilization and cooling systems.

Server and accelerator mix

CPU-only servers, high-memory systems, storage arrays and accelerator nodes have different nameplate ratings and operating behavior. The relevant measurement is the sustained and peak load of the installed equipment, not the maximum rating printed on one device.

Utilization and workload timing

Servers consume power while busy and still draw energy when idle. Batch training, overnight analytics, backups and interactive services create different daily profiles. Measuring only a short low-load interval can miss peaks; measuring a single peak can overstate normal annual use.

Cooling design and climate

Air cooling, direct liquid cooling, chilled-water systems and evaporative designs impose different overheads. Outdoor temperature, humidity, water availability, rack density and allowable server inlet temperature all affect cooling power. This is why cooling’s share can range from single digits in an efficient hyperscale facility to more than 30% in a less-efficient enterprise site.

Reliability and electrical topology

Transformers, switchgear, UPS systems, batteries, generators and redundant chillers improve resilience but add conversion losses and standby equipment. Two facilities with identical IT loads can therefore have different total electrical demands.

How to estimate a facility’s electricity requirement

A defensible estimate starts with a declared boundary and separates measured values from assumptions.

  1. Define the boundary. State whether the figure covers only IT equipment, the whole building, a campus or utility-side losses. Specify whether cryptocurrency mining or colocated tenants are included.
  2. Inventory the IT load. Count servers, storage, networking and accelerators. Use measured rack or panel data where available; use manufacturer ratings only as an upper-bound planning input.
  3. Measure both average and peak. Record interval data over representative operating periods, including maintenance, backups and high-demand jobs. Report the time window and sampling interval.
  4. Apply or measure PUE. If IT demand is known and PUE is measured, total facility demand equals IT demand multiplied by PUE. For example, a hypothetical 10 MW IT load at PUE 1.45 would correspond to 14.5 MW of facility demand; that arithmetic is an illustration, not a claim about a particular site.
  5. Convert power to annual energy only after choosing an operating profile. A constant-load assumption is rarely realistic. Use the measured load curve or clearly state the utilization and operating hours used in the calculation.
  6. Check against utility and submeter records. Main incomers, UPS outputs, cooling plants and major electrical rooms should reconcile within known measurement tolerances. Investigate unexplained differences before publishing a total.

For public comparisons, report the resulting number with its units, period, geography, boundary and whether it is measured, modeled or projected. “A 30 MW data center” should specify whether 30 MW is an IT design capacity, a current peak or a whole-facility service limit.

How much power does an AI data center use?

There is no standard AI-data-center figure. Training runs can concentrate accelerator use for long periods, while inference demand follows user traffic and may vary by hour. The same model can run on different hardware, with different batch sizes, precision settings and utilization. Cooling and power-conversion overhead then raise the facility total above the accelerator load.

The reliable way to answer an AI site’s question is to identify its accelerator count and type, measured utilization, storage and network load, cooling configuration and PUE. A claim about the electricity cost of one AI query is not a substitute for a facility measurement: query energy depends on model size, response length, hardware, batching and the surrounding data-center systems.

What the 2030 forecasts do—and do not—say

The IEA’s 945 TWh global base case and Berkeley Lab’s 649 TWh U.S. reference case are scenario outputs. They depend on assumptions about server shipments, AI and other compute demand, utilization, equipment lifetimes, cooling, efficiency and future electricity consumption. Berkeley Lab presents a wider U.S. range of 521–843 TWh to show compounded uncertainty.

These forecasts are not promises that every data center will operate at a particular load, nor are they interchangeable because one is global and the other is national. The newer Berkeley Lab update supersedes its earlier U.S. forecast for current planning; the older report remains historical context rather than the preferred 2030 estimate.

Common questions, answered precisely

Is 415 TWh the power draw of one data center?

No. It is the IEA’s estimate for all data centers worldwide over 2024, expressed as annual energy.

How much electricity do U.S. data centers use?

Berkeley Lab estimates 192 TWh in 2024, equal to 4.7% of U.S. electricity consumption. The estimate is U.S.-only and excludes cryptocurrency mining.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do servers or cooling use more electricity?

Servers average around 60% in the IEA overview. Cooling can be about 7% in efficient hyperscale facilities and over 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities, so the answer depends on the site.

Will better chips reduce total data-center electricity use?

They can reduce energy per computation, but total electricity can still rise when computational demand grows faster than efficiency improves.

Why do two data centers with the same server count have different power needs?

Utilization, accelerator mix, storage, networking, cooling design, climate, redundancy and facility occupancy all change the total load.

Bottom line for interpreting any quoted number

  • Check whether the figure is instantaneous power (MW/GW) or annual energy (MWh/TWh).
  • Identify the geography, year and facilities included.
  • Separate measured historical use from a reference case or uncertainty range.
  • Ask whether the number covers IT equipment only or the complete facility.
  • Treat AI as one contributor to growth, alongside conventional digital services and expanding compute demand.
