There is no evidence-based percentage that fits every investor. Decide your total stock-and-bond mix first, then determine whether your existing stock funds already provide enough mid-cap and small-cap exposure. A dedicated allocation is reasonable only when it improves diversification and you can tolerate the additional volatility and liquidity risk. Your time horizon, risk tolerance, and holdings across every account should determine the amount—not a rule of thumb.
Why a universal percentage does not exist
Investor.gov, the SEC’s investor-education site, describes asset allocation as a personal decision. The appropriate mix depends primarily on how long the money will remain invested and how much loss and volatility you can tolerate. A long time horizon can make it easier to withstand sharp declines; a short horizon generally calls for less volatile assets because withdrawals may occur before a recovery.

That principle applies twice to this question. First, decide how much of your entire portfolio belongs in stocks, bonds, cash and other assets. Second, decide how the stock portion should be divided among large-, mid- and small-cap companies. Mid-cap and small-cap funds are still equity funds: moving money into them does not make an otherwise stock-heavy portfolio safer.

Existing exposure matters as well. A total-market or extended-market fund may already hold thousands of mid-sized and smaller companies, so adding a dedicated fund can simply duplicate what you own.

What “mid-cap” and “small-cap” mean
Market capitalization is a company’s share price multiplied by its shares outstanding. Fund providers sort companies into size bands, but the bands are not standardized. A prospectus filed with the SEC states that there is no official definition for each market-cap category and that the ranges can change. Treat a fund’s stated methodology as its definition rather than assuming that every “small-cap” fund owns the same companies.
| Category | What the available evidence establishes | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Small-cap | Morningstar’s 2026 definition is the bottom 10% of the overall equity market by capitalization. With data as of June 30, 2026, that represented companies of roughly $12.8 billion or less. | This is Morningstar’s classification, not a universal boundary. Another index provider can use different cutoffs or a different investable universe. |
| Mid-cap | No universal dollar range is established in the supplied evidence. | Read the fund’s prospectus or index methodology to see how it defines mid-cap and how often it reconstitutes the index. |
| Large-cap | Usually the largest companies in the provider’s eligible market, but the precise cutoff varies by methodology. | Check whether a “large-cap” fund overlaps substantially with your broad-market holdings. |
Because companies grow and shrink, a fund can drift between categories. Indexes may rebalance on a schedule, while an actively managed fund can change its holdings whenever the manager decides. The label on the front of a fund is therefore only a starting point.
Why smaller-company funds require a higher risk budget
A SEC-filed fund prospectus summarizes the additional risks this way:
“Mid-cap and small-cap companies carry additional risks because the operating histories of these companies tend to be more limited, their earnings and revenues less predictable (and some companies may be experiencing significant losses), and their share prices more volatile than those of larger, more established companies, all of which can negatively affect their value.”

The filing says those risks are generally greater for small-cap companies than for mid-cap companies. In practical terms, a smaller business may have fewer products, customers or financing options when conditions deteriorate. Its shares can also trade less frequently, making prices move more when investors rush to buy or sell. These are risk characteristics, not a forecast that every small-cap fund will underperform.
Volatility can be uncomfortable even when the long-term investment case remains intact. Before choosing an allocation, ask whether you could continue contributing—and avoid selling—in a year when the fund has fallen sharply. If a decline would force you to abandon the plan, the position is larger than your risk capacity allows.
Step 1: set the overall stock-and-bond allocation
Do not begin by picking a mid-cap percentage. Make an inventory of your complete household portfolio, including taxable accounts, workplace retirement plans, individual retirement accounts, cash reserves and any other investments. Then establish the stock, bond and cash percentages that match your goal and withdrawal date.
Questions that determine the overall mix
- When will you need the money? Money needed soon has less time to recover from a market decline.
- How large a temporary loss can you financially and emotionally withstand? Consider both your income stability and your reaction to past downturns.
- Do you have an emergency reserve? A separate cash reserve can reduce the chance that you must sell volatile holdings for an unexpected expense.
- Are your future contributions or withdrawals changing? A portfolio for a growing account can be managed differently from one funding regular living expenses.
Only after answering those questions should you decide how much of the stock allocation belongs in different company sizes. A lower-volatility target does not become low risk merely because its stocks are divided among large, mid and small companies.

Step 2: measure the mid-cap and small-cap exposure you already have
Look through each fund’s current holdings or portfolio breakdown. A broad-market index fund may include large-, mid- and small-cap shares; a large-cap fund may still own a few companies that have recently moved out of the largest tier. Add the exposures across accounts instead of judging one fund in isolation.
Use a look-through worksheet
- List every equity fund and its percentage of the total portfolio.
- Record each fund’s stated market-cap distribution, benchmark and top holdings.
- Estimate the portion attributable to mid-cap and small-cap companies using the fund’s latest holdings data.
- Add overlapping positions. Two funds can own many of the same companies even when their names suggest different categories.
- Compare the resulting exposure with your intended stock allocation, not with the value of one account.
Investor.gov warns that a narrowly focused mutual fund or ETF may not provide meaningful diversification. A fund containing many securities can still be concentrated in one sector, industry or group of similar companies. Review the largest holdings and sector weights before assuming that a second fund broadens your portfolio.
Step 3: decide whether a dedicated fund solves a real problem
A dedicated mid-cap or small-cap fund can make sense when your current holdings omit those companies and you deliberately want broader equity exposure. It is less compelling when a broad-market fund already supplies the exposure or when the new position mainly increases concentration in the same names.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReasons to add a dedicated position
- Your existing stock funds have a clearly documented large-cap bias.
- You want a transparent allocation to a defined size segment and can accept its wider swings.
- The fund’s benchmark, holdings and costs complement rather than duplicate your core funds.
- You have a long enough horizon that you will not need to sell during a likely period of volatility.
Reasons to avoid adding one
- Your total-market or extended-market fund already gives substantial mid- and small-cap exposure.
- The proposed fund overlaps heavily with holdings you already own.
- You are adding it solely because large-cap stocks recently outperformed or because a category has recently rallied.
- A near-term spending need makes the additional volatility inappropriate.

| Hypothetical household | Overall portfolio assumption | Illustrative equity split | What the example demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shorter horizon | 40% stocks, 60% bonds and cash | 80% large-cap, 15% mid-cap, 5% small-cap within stocks | The portfolio keeps the overall equity share modest; the small-cap slice is not a substitute for the larger bond allocation. |
| Longer horizon | 80% stocks, 20% bonds | 65% large-cap, 20% mid-cap, 15% small-cap within stocks | The investor accepts more equity volatility overall, so the size segments can represent a larger portion of the total portfolio without changing the stated assumptions. |
| Already broadly diversified | 70% stocks, 30% bonds | Existing total-market fund; no dedicated size funds | A separate mid-cap or small-cap fund may add little if the core fund already supplies the desired exposure. |
For example, in the second illustration, 15% of the stock allocation equals 12% of the entire portfolio—not 15% of the entire portfolio. Always state the denominator. A reader who interprets an equity-only percentage as a percentage of total assets can unintentionally take much more risk than intended.
How to compare mid-cap and small-cap funds
Category names are not enough. Review the documents and data for the specific fund you are considering.
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth and overlap | Number of holdings, largest positions, sector weights and overlap with your current funds. | A second fund may increase concentration instead of diversification. |
| Benchmark and classification | Index name, eligible universe, size cutoffs, reconstitution schedule and weighting method. | Two funds labeled “small-cap” can own different companies and produce different exposures. |
| Weighting method | Market-cap weighting, equal weighting or another approach. | Market-cap-weighted indexes give larger companies greater influence on results. |
| Fees and trading costs | Expense ratio, transaction costs, bid-ask spread and any account-level charges. | Costs reduce returns and can be especially relevant when comparing similar index funds. |
| Tracking difference or error | How closely an index strategy has followed its benchmark after expenses and implementation effects. | A fund can lag its index even when the category’s headline return looks attractive. |
| Liquidity and volatility | Trading volume, spread, price swings and the fund’s stated risk disclosures. | Less-liquid holdings can make a fund harder to trade at a favorable price during stress. |
Investor.gov recommends reviewing a fund’s fees, risks, index makeup and fit with your goals. For an index fund, read the prospectus and shareholder report rather than relying on a category label or a recent performance chart. The Russell 2000 is one example of a small-company index, but selecting a benchmark is a methodology decision, not a guarantee of superior returns.

Morningstar reported that more than half of U.S. small-cap stocks lost at least 10.0% in 2024, while its Morningstar US Small Cap Market Index gained about 10.8% for the year. The figures were published July 13, 2026 and describe that specific period and index. They illustrate how widely individual stocks can vary inside a category; they do not establish a forward-looking return or a suitable allocation.

Do not increase a small-cap position simply because large-cap stocks recently led the market, and do not abandon it after a weak period. Use the allocation you selected for your time horizon and risk tolerance, then change it only when your circumstances or plan changes.
Rebalancing after markets change
Market movements can push a portfolio away from its intended stock-and-bond and size mix. Investor.gov describes rebalancing as bringing the holdings back toward the original allocation. Two common methods are a regular calendar review and a threshold approach that triggers action when a holding moves a specified distance from its target.
- Choose a review schedule or threshold before volatility arrives.
- Calculate each holding as a percentage of the whole portfolio, including every account.
- Direct new contributions toward underweight areas when practical, which can reduce trading.
- If sales are necessary, consider taxes, spreads and account restrictions before placing orders.
- Recheck the plan after a major life change rather than reacting to a headline or one year of returns.
Rebalancing is a risk-control process, not a promise that the next market move will be favorable. A threshold that is too narrow can create unnecessary trading; a review that is too infrequent can allow risk to drift substantially.

A practical decision checklist
- Have you set a stock, bond and cash allocation for your goal and withdrawal timeline?
- Have you counted holdings across taxable and retirement accounts?
- Does a broad-market fund already provide the mid-cap and small-cap exposure you want?
- Do the proposed fund’s benchmark and market-cap boundaries match your intended exposure?
- Have you checked top holdings, sector concentration and overlap?
- Are the expense ratio, transaction costs and tracking difference acceptable?
- Could you hold through a severe decline without selling in panic?
- Do you have a written rebalancing method and a reason for changing the allocation?
If the answers are unclear, pause and read the current prospectus, shareholder report and holdings file for each fund. The SEC-filed risk disclosure is specific to the fund and is not personalized investment advice; your final allocation should reflect your own circumstances or a qualified adviser’s assessment.
