The segment’s operating loss was $1.561 billion in 2024, so it widened by $4.794 billion, or 307.1%, in a year. These are SpaceX-reported AI-segment results that include xAI-related operations after the corporate combination—not a standalone xAI cash-flow statement.
How much did SpaceX’s AI segment lose?
SpaceX’s 2026 SEC filing reports the following operating results for its AI segment:

| Year | Revenue | Operating loss |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | $2.620 billion | $1.561 billion |
| 2025 | $3.201 billion | $6.355 billion |
The 2025 loss was $4.794 billion greater than the 2024 loss—a 307.1% year-over-year increase. Revenue rose by $581 million between those years, but expenses grew much faster.
What drove the 2025 loss?
The filing reports $9.556 billion in AI-segment costs and expenses in 2025. The largest category was research and development, reflecting the expense of building AI infrastructure and compute capacity.
#1 Best Overall
| 2025 AI-segment expense | Amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Cost of revenue | $2.178 billion | Costs associated with delivering the segment’s revenue-generating services and products. |
| Research and development | $5.064 billion | The largest expense category; R&D increased $3.888 billion, or 330.8%, from 2024. |
| Selling and administrative | $1.827 billion | Selling and administrative expense reported for the segment. |
| Restructuring charges | $487 million | Restructuring expense reported for 2025. |
Those four categories total $9.556 billion. Compared with $3.201 billion in revenue, they produce the reported $6.355 billion operating loss.
Did the losses continue as revenue accelerated in 2026?
First half of 2026
SpaceX’s filing for the six months ended June 30, 2026 says the AI operating loss increased 51.5% year over year. The filing attributes much of the increase in R&D to $1.742 billion in additional infrastructure and cloud-computing costs and $449 million in higher employee compensation associated with expanding compute infrastructure.

Second quarter of 2026
AI-segment revenue in Q2 2026 grew 247.5% year over year. The filing attributes $1.600 billion of the revenue increase to AI infrastructure services and $258 million to Grok and X subscriptions. This indicates that infrastructure services, as well as subscriptions, were significant sources of growth in that quarter.

Costs rose substantially too: compared with Q2 2025, infrastructure and cloud-computing costs increased by $470 million within cost of revenue and by $726 million within R&D. The figures show why rapid sales growth alone does not establish that the segment is approaching profitability: the expense base, particularly infrastructure-related spending, was growing at the same time.

Is xAI profitable, and does the loss mean it is running out of money?
The reported AI-segment operating results are not profitable: SpaceX disclosed an operating loss in both 2024 and 2025, and a 51.5% year-over-year increase in that loss for the first half of 2026. The filings establish substantial operating losses and investment in compute infrastructure; they do not, by themselves, establish insolvency or provide a date when the segment might become profitable.
An operating loss is also not the same as a cash-flow statement. It measures revenue against operating expenses under the company’s accounting presentation, not how much cash xAI independently has available or how long it can fund its operations. The cited figures are for SpaceX’s AI segment after the corporate combination and do not isolate xAI as a standalone company.

It is possible for revenue to grow quickly while losses widen if the costs of building and operating capacity rise faster. That is the pattern in the reported results: 2025 revenue reached $3.201 billion, but costs and expenses reached $9.556 billion; in Q2 2026, revenue growth was very strong while infrastructure and cloud-computing costs also rose materially.

Whether revenue can eventually cover those costs depends on how the business develops. Useful indicators in future filings include:
- Operating loss relative to revenue: whether losses narrow as sales expand.
- Infrastructure and compute spending: whether added capacity yields enough revenue to justify its cost.
- Revenue mix: how infrastructure services compare with subscriptions and other sources of income.
- Loss trajectory: whether operating losses improve across successive reporting periods.
- Funding and debt capacity: what the filings disclose about the resources available to support continued investment.
The available figures show fast-growing revenue alongside substantial costs and ongoing losses. They do not establish when, or whether, the AI segment will reach operating profitability.
