1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a mixed creative PC, 8 GB of GPU memory is a sensible recommendation-level starting point for mainstream Adobe Premiere and Blender work. More demanding effects, high-resolution or stereoscopic projects, complex 3D scenes, and local AI models can exceed that capacity. The right choice is set by your most memory-hungry real workload, not by a universal VRAM number.
The practical answer in one view
Capacity requirements differ by application and platform. Adobe’s current Premiere 26.x documentation recommends 8 GB of GPU memory for HD, 4K, and higher-resolution editing, while Blender lists 8 GB as its recommended GPU memory and 2 GB as a minimum for the configurations shown. Adobe’s Windows table also lists 4 GB of discrete GPU memory as the minimum. On Apple silicon, Adobe reports unified-memory figures instead: 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Those unified-memory values describe a shared pool and should not be treated as identical to dedicated VRAM on a discrete graphics card.

| Workload or platform | Published figure | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Premiere 26.x on Windows with a discrete NVIDIA, Intel, or AMD GPU | 4 GB minimum; 8 GB recommended | The minimum is aimed at basic operation; Adobe’s recommendation is the more useful planning reference for HD, 4K, and higher-resolution editing. |
| Premiere 26.x on Apple silicon | 8 GB unified memory minimum; 16 GB recommended | System memory is shared by the CPU, GPU, and applications, so this is not a discrete-VRAM specification. |
| Blender GPU configurations shown on its requirements page | 2 GB VRAM minimum; 8 GB recommended | A general requirement, not a guarantee that every Cycles render, scene, texture set, or effect will fit. |
| AI example in NVIDIA Brev guidance | Approximately 14 GB for the weights of a 7-billion-parameter model at FP16 | Weights alone are estimated; runtime memory also depends on inference or training, batch size, and other allocations. |
Adobe’s Premiere requirements were updated October 7, 2026 (official requirements). Blender publishes its figures on its requirements page. The AI estimate comes from NVIDIA’s Brev documentation, last updated April 6, 2026 (GPU Types guidance).

VRAM is the fast memory attached to a discrete GPU. During editing, rendering, or model execution, the application stores working data there: video frames, textures, geometry, shader data, effect buffers, and AI model data. If the active workload cannot fit, software may move data through system memory or storage, reduce the workload, or fail to start a GPU operation. The exact behavior depends on the application and driver.

Capacity is only one part of performance. GPU compute capability, supported APIs and drivers, CPU performance, system RAM, storage speed, and the media pipeline also affect responsiveness. The published figures above are capacity requirements or recommendations, not benchmark scores. A card with more VRAM is not automatically faster than one with less, and adding memory does not compensate for inadequate compute or unsupported software features.
Video editing: use the project that pushes Premiere hardest
Premiere’s current memory guidance
For Premiere 26.x, Adobe recommends 8 GB of GPU memory for HD, 4K, and higher-resolution editing. On Windows, the same table lists 4 GB as the minimum for discrete NVIDIA, Intel, or AMD graphics. Adobe explicitly notes that the minimum specifications are for editing HD video, so a minimum-capacity card should be viewed as an entry point rather than a comfortable target for a complex timeline.
Adobe’s Apple-silicon figures are expressed as unified memory: 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended. Because the CPU and GPU draw from the same pool, applications, the operating system, and media can compete for it. Do not add the discrete-GPU and system-RAM numbers together when comparing the two platforms.

Premiere uses the GPU for specific accelerated effects and image-processing operations. A timeline’s memory demand therefore depends on the effects stack, compositing, formats, and number of simultaneous layers as well as the frame size. Adobe also warns that high-resolution stereoscopic VR can require additional memory. A label such as “4K” is consequently an incomplete sizing rule: two 4K projects can have very different GPU footprints.

How to size for an editing workstation
- Identify the exact Premiere release and operating system. The Windows discrete-GPU table and Apple-silicon unified-memory table are different.
- Write down the largest frame sizes, number of layers, intensive effects, color work, and any stereoscopic VR material in your normal projects.
- Use Adobe’s 8 GB recommendation as the baseline for mainstream HD, 4K, and higher-resolution work, not the 4 GB Windows minimum.
- If your projects contain unusually heavy effects, high-resolution VR, or substantially more simultaneous media than the documented baseline, select a card with capacity above that recommendation and confirm the application can address it.
- Check CPU, system memory, storage, codecs, and driver support separately; VRAM capacity alone cannot guarantee smooth playback or export.
3D and Blender: scene complexity determines the ceiling
What Blender publishes
Blender’s official requirements list 2 GB of VRAM as a minimum and 8 GB as recommended for the GPU configurations shown. The recommended figure is a sensible starting point for general modeling, viewport work, and many ordinary scenes, but it is not a promise that every render will fit.
Why a scene can exceed the recommendation
Textures, geometry, modifiers, particle or simulation data, shadow and render buffers, and the selected render engine all contribute to memory use. Cycles GPU rendering has additional requirements noted by Blender, so a scene that opens in the viewport can still exceed available memory when rendering. Large texture resolutions and multiple high-detail assets can be more important than the nominal polygon count.

A Blender sizing procedure
- Check the Blender version and the requirements page for the GPU backend you intend to use.
- Profile the heaviest scene you expect to render, including its largest textures, simulations, and output settings.
- Treat 2 GB as a compatibility minimum, not a target for serious GPU rendering; use the published 8 GB recommendation as the general planning baseline.
- Choose additional capacity when your production scenes are larger than that baseline, and verify Cycles-specific requirements before committing to a GPU.
- Keep system RAM and storage in the plan because they hold application, scene, cache, and operating-system data outside the GPU’s dedicated pool.
AI workloads: model weights are only the first allocation
The 7-billion-parameter example
NVIDIA’s GPU guidance gives the shorthand “7B params ~ 14GB for fp16.” In other words, the estimated FP16 weights for a 7-billion-parameter model occupy about 14 GB. This is a model-weight estimate, not a complete runtime requirement and not a universal statement that every 7B model needs exactly that amount of GPU memory.

What else consumes memory
NVIDIA advises accounting for model size, training versus inference, and batch size. Runtime allocations can include temporary workspaces, activations, input and output data, framework overhead, and—during training—additional state beyond the weights. The required capacity therefore changes with precision, the execution mode, and how much data is processed at once.
A GPU advertised with 8 GB cannot hold the complete FP16 weights in that 7B example. That does not by itself determine whether an AI workflow is impossible: software may support a different precision, CPU or system-memory placement, partitioning, or other execution strategy, but those are application-specific choices and can change performance. Confirm the exact model, framework, precision, and mode before treating a capacity number as sufficient.
AI sizing checklist
- Record the model’s parameter size and the precision used at runtime.
- Separate inference from training; training generally has additional memory allocations.
- Set the intended batch size and account for input length or image dimensions where the framework exposes them.
- Compare the resulting working set with the GPU’s usable memory, leaving room for the operating system, driver, and application overhead.
- Verify that the framework and GPU support the required API and operations; capacity without software support is not a usable configuration.
How to choose between two GPUs
When two cards meet the nominal capacity, compare the workload and platform details rather than selecting by the larger number alone.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Does usable memory meet the application’s minimum or recommendation for the worst project? | Insufficient capacity can prevent a scene, timeline, or model from fitting. |
| Actual workload | What are the maximum resolution, effects, scene and texture complexity, model size, precision, training or inference mode, and batch size? | These conditions can raise memory use beyond a generic application label. |
| Software support | Are the exact OS, driver, GPU API, render backend, and application version supported? | A theoretically large memory pool is irrelevant if the required feature cannot run. |
| Compute capability | Does the card provide the needed acceleration for effects, rendering, or AI operations? | VRAM capacity does not measure processing speed. |
| System limits | Are CPU, system RAM, storage, codecs, and cooling adequate? | Other bottlenecks can dominate playback, rendering, loading, or training. |
| Upgrade constraints | Can the case, power supply, motherboard, and budget support the selected card? | A capacity decision must fit the complete computer, not only the GPU slot. |
NVIDIA’s creative-workflow guide provides additional context for matching GPU capabilities to creative applications (NVIDIA Studio guidance). It should complement, not replace, the requirements for your exact software release.

Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Using the minimum as the buying target
A minimum describes a floor for a stated configuration. Premiere’s 4 GB Windows figure and Blender’s 2 GB figure should not be interpreted as comfortable capacity for every project. Use the recommendation when your workload resembles the documented mainstream case, then move above it for heavier work.
Assuming an 8 GB card covers every AI model
The 8 GB recommendation is documented for Premiere and Blender, not for all AI workloads. The 7B FP16 weight estimate alone is about 14 GB, and runtime allocations add to it. Size AI hardware from the model and execution plan rather than borrowing a creative-app recommendation.
Comparing unified memory with discrete VRAM as if they were identical
Apple-silicon unified memory is shared across the system, whereas a discrete GPU has its own VRAM pool. Adobe’s 8 GB minimum and 16 GB recommendation for Apple silicon therefore describe a different architecture from the Windows discrete-GPU figures.
Ignoring effects, textures, and backends
Resolution, effects, stereoscopic VR, texture detail, render engine, precision, and batch size can all alter the working set. Recheck the heaviest real project and the exact backend instead of relying on a single headline specification.

Expecting more VRAM to make every card faster
Additional capacity prevents memory pressure only when the workload needs it. It does not by itself increase compute throughput, improve a codec implementation, or fix an unsupported driver, slow CPU, insufficient system RAM, or storage bottleneck.
Buying guidance: when an 8 GB graphics card is appropriate
A graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM is a defensible category for mainstream Premiere and Blender work because both applications publish 8 GB recommendations. Buy on the basis of the complete workload: verify the card’s current memory, supported APIs, application compatibility, power and physical fit, price, and availability before choosing a model. If local AI is the primary workload, calculate the model’s complete runtime footprint first; an 8 GB card may not meet the requirement even though it is suitable for many editing and 3D projects.
For a mixed workstation, let the most demanding task decide capacity. A user whose largest projects are ordinary Premiere timelines and Blender scenes can start at the documented 8 GB tier. A user running large AI models, very complex Cycles scenes, or unusually heavy Premiere effects should plan beyond that baseline and validate the software’s actual memory behavior.
