That is a practical cushion, not an official Steam, Microsoft, or industry standard. A game listed at 85 GB therefore deserves roughly 102–111 GB free before you start, and more if it receives large patches, includes optional content, or the launcher requests a larger allocation.
Check the exact edition in the store or launcher you will use, then verify free space on the destination drive. If that drive also contains Windows, reserve room for operating-system updates separately; game capacity and Windows’ temporary update space are different requirements.

There is no universal number
PC games do not share a fixed installation-size rule. Published requirements differ by engine, texture quality, included languages, downloadable content, and edition. They can also change when a developer adds updates. The number shown in a store listing is the best starting point for that specific title, but it is not a promise that every future install, patch, or local file will fit in exactly that amount.

What current game listings show
Individual Steam support listings illustrate the spread in requirements. They are examples, not an industry average or a prediction for an unlisted game.
| Game example | Published storage requirement | Approximate 20–30% planning range | Drive specification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sifu | 22 GB | 26.4–28.6 GB | Check the current listing for its exact specification |
| Star Wars Outlaws | 65 GB | 78–84.5 GB | SSD required on the cited Steam listing |
| Hogwarts Legacy | 85 GB | 102–110.5 GB | SSD preferred; HDD supported on the cited Steam listing |
The figures above come from Steam support pages accessed in 2026 and can change. Recheck the listing immediately before installing, particularly after a major edition or content update.

Why the listed size is not the whole storage story
Patches and updates
Steam notes that patches and updates can use additional disk space. An update may need room for downloaded data, temporary files, and replacement files while the existing installation remains available. A game that fits when first installed can therefore fail a later update if the drive has been filled too tightly.
Saved games and local data
Local saves are usually small compared with a modern game, but they still occupy space and may be accompanied by shader caches, crash dumps, screenshots, or configuration files. Multiplayer games can also accumulate custom content. Steam identifies local saved games and multiplayer custom content as possible sources of additional use.
Optional content and edition differences
Deluxe editions, language packs, high-resolution texture packs, and optional campaigns can have different requirements. Compare the exact edition and platform you intend to install rather than copying a number from a different listing.

How to calculate your own safe amount
- Find the current requirement. Open the game’s store or launcher page and record the storage figure for your edition, operating system, and platform. Do not rely on an old screenshot or a search result that may describe a previous build.
- Apply a planning cushion. Multiply the listed size by 1.20 for ordinary titles or by 1.30 when updates and optional content are likely to be substantial. For an 80 GB listing, that produces 96–104 GB of free space.
- Inspect the destination drive. In Windows, open File Explorer and select This PC to see free space on each drive. You can also open Settings → System → Storage for a category breakdown.
- Compare the result with the launcher. Start the install far enough to view the launcher’s current space check, without confirming an installation you cannot accommodate. If it reports a larger requirement, use that figure and investigate why it differs.
- Keep operating-system headroom. If the destination is the Windows system drive, subtract the space you intend to preserve for Windows updates before deciding how much is available for games.
Windows needs its own free space
Microsoft says a typical Windows feature update may require 6–11 GB or more, while a typical quality update may require 2–3 GB or more. Actual needs vary with the update path, installed content, optional components, and rollback files. These are Windows-update figures, not game-installation requirements, so do not add them once and assume the result will remain valid forever.

A drive that appears to have enough room for a game can still become constrained when an update is pending. Use Settings → System → Storage to review installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Microsoft explains that reserved storage can hold temporary files and caches and can be used by processes such as Windows Update when space is low.
For a gaming PC with one system drive, treat the 20–30% game cushion and Windows’ variable update needs as separate reservations. On a dedicated secondary game drive, Windows-update space is less directly relevant, although the drive still needs room for patches and other local files.

SSD or HDD: follow the title’s specification
Storage capacity and storage speed are separate questions. Some games require an SSD; others merely recommend one or continue to support an HDD. The cited Steam listing for Star Wars Outlaws requires an SSD, while the cited Hogwarts Legacy listing prefers an SSD but supports an HDD.
Do not turn those examples into a blanket rule for every PC game. Read the current requirements for your title. If an SSD is required, having enough free gigabytes on an HDD will not satisfy that requirement. If an HDD is supported, an SSD may still be the better choice for loading behavior, but the listing’s requirement determines compatibility.

What to do when the drive is too full
Clean up identifiable space
In Settings → System → Storage, inspect large installed apps, temporary files, and other categories before deleting anything. Remove only files you recognize. Emptying a recycle bin, uninstalling an unused game, or relocating personal media can create predictable capacity; deleting unknown system files can create new problems.

Use another library drive
Steam supports library folders on multiple drives and moving installed games between them. In the Steam client, open Steam → Settings → Storage, add or select another drive, then choose an installed game and use the move option shown in the storage manager. Moving a less-used title can free the required space without downloading it again. This changes where the files live; it does not reduce the game’s published requirement.
Add internal storage when capacity is the recurring problem
An additional internal SSD can provide a separate game library and keep the Windows drive from filling during updates. Capacity, interface compatibility, installation space inside the case, and backup practices still matter. No single drive size or model is guaranteed to solve every workload, and storage hardware does not change a particular game’s required gigabytes.
When an install fails despite apparently sufficient space
A message such as “I cannot install a 90 GB game even though I have 140 GB free” does not establish one universal failure mechanism. Work through the checks below:
- Confirm the target volume. The launcher may be checking a different library drive than the one you inspected.
- Recheck the edition and current listing. Optional content or a changed build can make the launcher’s allocation larger than an older store figure.
- Look for update or staging space. A launcher may need temporary room to unpack or replace files, even when the final installed footprint appears smaller.
- Check the file system and permissions. A nearly full volume, an unavailable library folder, or insufficient write access can produce an error unrelated to the headline game size.
- Pause competing downloads and updates. Another game, Windows Update, or a backup process can consume the margin while installation is in progress.
- Retry after freeing additional room. If the launcher continues to request more space, treat its live requirement as authoritative for that build rather than forcing an installation with a smaller buffer.
A practical policy for different game types
| Situation | Planning approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Small, stable single-player title | Listed size plus about 20% | Leaves room for ordinary patching and local files |
| Large live-service or frequently patched game | Listed size plus about 30% or the launcher’s larger request | Updates can require staging space and arrive often |
| Game with optional texture packs or expansions | Include the content you will actually install, then add the cushion | Optional components can change the real footprint |
| Installation on the Windows drive | Reserve game headroom and separate room for Windows updates | Operating-system temporary files compete for the same volume |
| Installation on a dedicated secondary drive | Use the game calculation, while retaining room for future patches | Windows-update pressure is lower, but game updates still need space |
How often to recheck your free space
Check before the initial installation, before a major expansion, and whenever the launcher announces a large update. A drive can lose its safety margin gradually through screenshots, recordings, shader caches, custom multiplayer content, and other games. Storage settings and the launcher’s own pre-installation check provide a more useful current picture than a one-time calculation made months earlier.
The bottom line on planning
Use the game’s current store or launcher listing as the baseline, keep roughly 20–30% extra free as practical planning headroom, and give more room to actively updated or content-heavy titles. Preserve Windows-update space separately on the system drive, obey any SSD requirement, and move less-used games to another Steam library when capacity becomes tight. Because no publisher has established a universal launcher-independent multiplier, the current installation prompt remains the final authority for that specific build.
