Visual regression testing can cost nothing in dedicated software fees with a self-managed workflow, or hundreds of dollars a month with hosted services. Neither figure is the whole project cost: test setup, stable rendering, review, maintenance, and CI execution also take time and resources. There is no reliable universal market average, so estimate using your own pages, visual states, browser coverage, and run frequency.
What determines the cost?
The bill depends on what you capture and how often—not just how many URLs your site has. A single page may have several meaningful states, such as a menu open, a signed-in view, or a validation error. Each additional browser, viewport, or device can multiply the work and, depending on the service, the billable units.
- Coverage: pages or components, and the UI states worth checking.
- Rendering combinations: browsers, viewport widths, and device coverage.
- Run volume: pull requests, scheduled runs, release checks, and retries.
- Plan rules: included units, overages, concurrency, retention, and team or support features.
- Internal effort: implementation, baseline approval, handling dynamic content, maintenance, diff triage, and CI compute.
There is no dependable general labor-rate or total-cost benchmark. Estimate your team’s own effort rather than treating a subscription price as the full cost.

| Percy by BrowserStack | Free: 5,000 screenshots per month. BrowserStack’s pricing page lists Desktop at $199/month and Desktop & Mobile at $599/month, billed annually; verify these paid prices with BrowserStack before purchase. | A screenshot is one rendering for a browser and responsive-width combination. Billing documentation describes included allocations and overages. Its free allowance is also documented there. Percy billing · BrowserStack pricing |
| Chromatic | Free: $0/month; Starter: $179/month; Pro: $399/month; Enterprise: custom. | Free includes 5,000 billed snapshots, Starter 35,000, and Pro 85,000. Starter lists additional billed snapshots at $0.008 each. The pricing page advertises TurboSnap, which selects affected tests based on file changes and reuses unaffected snapshots with reduced usage impact. Chromatic pricing |
| Applitools | Starter: $667/month, billed annually; Professional and Enterprise: customized pricing. | Starter lists 100,000 component checkpoints or 1,000 page checkpoints. The vendor describes higher-scale options and features for Professional and Enterprise. Applitools pricing |
BrowserStack’s published pricing page could not be fully retrieved when these figures were checked, so treat its paid prices as examples requiring direct confirmation. Percy’s billing documentation independently confirms the free allocation and how it counts screenshots. The other vendor prices above are likewise public-page examples, not guaranteed quotes.
How to estimate your monthly usage
- List the coverage unit. Count the pages or components and meaningful UI states you plan to snapshot. Do not assume every vendor bills by page.
- Multiply by rendering combinations. Include the browsers, widths, and devices that matter. Percy gives this example: two pages across two browsers and three widths produce 12 screenshots.
- Multiply by run volume. Estimate pull-request checks, scheduled builds, release checks, and retries. Model both a normal and a busy month to expose usage headroom.
- Apply each vendor’s meter. Percy counts browser-width renderings as screenshots; Chromatic uses billed snapshots; Applitools distinguishes page and component checkpoints. These units are not interchangeable.
- Add internal and infrastructure costs. Account for integration, test authoring, baseline approval, stabilizing dynamic content, CI capacity, ongoing maintenance, and triage of unwanted versus meaningful changes.
- Compare the plan you would actually need. Check browser and mobile coverage, retention, concurrency, review and noise controls, source-control and CI integrations, security, and support—not just the headline price.
A useful model is: monthly hosted charge = usage under the vendor’s unit and allowance rules + applicable overages. Keep internal labor and CI costs as separate estimates so they do not disappear behind a subscription total.

Is visual regression testing free with Playwright?
Playwright Test supports reference screenshots and later comparisons through toHaveScreenshot(); its documentation lists no separate visual-testing service fee. That does not make a production workflow costless: your team still writes and maintains tests, stores and reviews baselines, and pays for the environment that runs them.
Rendering consistency matters. Playwright notes that host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering, and recommends using the same environment for baseline and subsequent runs. If those conditions vary, diffs can reflect environment changes rather than a change you intended to test. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation for its comparison guidance.

Choose by workload, not headline price
A hosted service may bundle some mix of execution, comparison, review, browser or device coverage, collaboration, and stored history. That can avoid building parts of an internal system, but it does not guarantee savings: compare the plan and workflow against your own volume, team needs, and maintenance effort.
For a fair comparison, use the same workload model for every option: coverage, browser-width combinations, monthly runs, and expected retries. Then compare each vendor’s unit, included allowance, overage, coverage, review workflow, retention, and required team features. A low price per unit is not useful if the unit does not represent the same work.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Percy cost?
Percy’s documented Free allocation is 5,000 screenshots per month. BrowserStack’s pricing page lists Desktop at $199/month and Desktop & Mobile at $599/month, billed annually; confirm the live paid prices and terms directly with BrowserStack.
How many screenshots will I need?
Count the pages or components and meaningful UI states, then multiply by browser, viewport-width, or device combinations and monthly runs. For Percy’s accounting example, two pages across two browsers and three widths equal 12 screenshots.
Are visual-regression vendor prices directly comparable?
No. Percy counts browser-width screenshots, Chromatic counts billed snapshots, and Applitools distinguishes page from component checkpoints. Compare the same workload using each vendor’s own billing rules.
