Your bill is determined by the pricing unit (ingested data, search workload, monitored entities, or a package), the sources you send, how long data stays searchable, query activity, included features, contract terms, and related cloud services. A useful estimate therefore starts with a measured data profile and an itemized quote—not a market-average monthly figure.
What determines a SIEM bill?
Security information and event management (SIEM) platforms collect logs and telemetry, normalize them, run detections and searches, and retain the resulting data. Providers monetize different parts of that work. Two products that both advertise “per-GB” pricing may count different data, retention periods, compression methods, or query operations.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Before comparing offers, identify the primary meter in each proposal:
- Ingestion: charges follow the amount of data accepted per day or month.
- Commitment tiers: you reserve a daily capacity for a fixed fee and pay a defined rate for use above it.
- Workload: compute and storage capacity for searches and analytics drive the bill; indexing volume alone is not enough to predict cost.
- Entity or asset count: the number of hosts, containers, users, or protected devices is the pricing unit in some offerings.
- Package pricing: a tier bundles ingestion, retention, detections, threat intelligence, environments, support, or automation, with the final amount set by contract.
Those units are not interchangeable. A low-ingestion organization that runs expensive, frequent searches can cost more under workload pricing than under a simple ingest plan. Conversely, an organization with high-volume logs that are rarely queried may benefit from a workload model but pay heavily under pure ingestion pricing.

Measure your data before asking for a price
Vendors use volume as a billing input, but no single measurement method fits every environment. Build a representative profile instead of multiplying one quiet day by 30.
- Inventory every source. List identity systems, endpoint agents, firewalls, cloud audit logs, applications, databases, network devices, and security tools. Record the format and whether the source sends raw events or an already-filtered stream.
- Measure average and peak daily volume. Capture normal weekdays, weekends, month-end activity, software releases, incident periods, and other spikes. Keep raw and compressed measurements separate.
- Classify sources by detection value. Mark which streams must support real-time detections, which can be delayed, and which are useful only for investigations or compliance.
- Document routing and filtering. Sampling, field reduction, duplicate suppression, and routing selected events to a lower-cost tier can change the bill. Record exactly what is excluded so a quote remains comparable.
- Estimate searches and analytics. Count scheduled rules, analyst searches, dashboards, notebooks, threat-hunting sessions, and expected incident surges. Note whether searches scan compressed or uncompressed data.
Give each bidder the same profile. Ask for a sample invoice that shows the meter, unit, quantity, rate, included allowance, and overage treatment for every line.
Retention is a separate cost axis
“Retention” can mean several different things. Confirm how long data remains in the high-performance analytics tier, how long it is searchable, whether older data moves to an archive or data lake, and whether retrieving or scanning that older data costs extra.
Recommended Free Tools
| Retention question | Why it changes cost |
|---|---|
| How many days are included in analytics? | Some plans include a fixed period; extending it can add storage or retention charges. |
| What happens after analytics retention ends? | Data may move to a lower-cost tier with separate storage, processing, and query meters. |
| Is archived data searchable? | Searches can trigger scan or compute charges, especially when billing is based on uncompressed bytes read. |
| Is retrieval charged separately? | Data egress, restoration, or rehydration can add costs during investigations. |
Do not compare a package that includes 12 months of searchable telemetry with one that includes 30 or 90 days and prices the remainder separately. Put the retention schedule beside the ingestion assumptions in every quote.

How major SIEM pricing models work
Microsoft Sentinel
Microsoft documents pay-as-you-go and commitment tiers for its analytics tier. Pay-as-you-go is based on actual data volume stored, with optional retention charges beyond 90 days. Commitment pricing starts at 100 GB per day in the billing documentation. Usage above the selected commitment is charged at that commitment-tier rate, and the commitment can be lowered only once every 31 days.
Older workspaces created before July 2023 may have separate legacy Log Analytics charges, so a migration or workspace-age check belongs in the estimate.
Microsoft also identifies separate data-lake meters: ingestion for data-lake-only tables, processing, storage per GB per month after analytics retention ends, and queries priced per GB of uncompressed data scanned. Its billing example assumes 6:1 compression: 600 GB of raw retained data is billed as 100 GB compressed data. That is a vendor billing assumption and example, not a guaranteed compression ratio for every dataset. Advanced data-insight compute can add another charge.

The free-trial documentation describes 10 GB per day of Analytics-plan ingestion for 31 days, limited to 20 workspaces per tenant. Automation, bring-your-own-machine-learning, and data-lake charges can still apply, so the trial is not an expected ongoing price.

A Microsoft pricing-page promotion announced October 1, 2025 offers a 50 GB commitment tier for qualifying purchases signed up through December 31, 2026, with the promotional price retained through March 31, 2027. Eligibility and regional pricing can change; verify the live terms before relying on this promotion.
Google Security Operations
Google describes Standard, Enterprise, and Enterprise Plus packages and says pricing is based on ingestion. Its product page states that one year of security telemetry retention is included at no additional cost. The packages differ in rule limits, threat intelligence, environments, and pipeline management, and all three are listed as “Contact sales for pricing.” There is therefore no public universal rate to plug into a spreadsheet.
Archived service terms dated January 30, 2025 describe a log-ingestion model charged at a flat rate up to the purchased data cap. Those terms say excess units may be invoiced monthly in arrears at a prorated list price less the discount specified in the order form, unless the parties agree otherwise. The same archived terms describe a separate covered-personnel model, including proportional fee increases when personnel count rises by 10% or more. Because the terms are archived and order-form-specific, treat them as contract language to verify—not a rule for every current customer.

Splunk describes ingest pricing based on gigabytes ingested, with users and search activity included without additional charges under that model. It also offers workload pricing based on the compute and storage required for search and analytics. Splunk says workload pricing can suit large data volumes that are searched infrequently.

Cloud workload capacity is measured in Splunk Virtual Compute (SVC) units; Splunk Enterprise workloads use virtual CPUs. Splunk says required capacity is primarily driven by search quantity and complexity and by daily indexing volume. Ask for search assumptions in writing: a quote based on occasional investigations is not comparable with one based on continuous dashboards, scheduled detections, and intensive threat hunting.
Splunk also describes entity pricing based on monitored hosts, containers, and protected devices, with unlimited data ingestion for defined entities. Its FAQ identifies Splunk Observability Cloud and AppDynamics for entity pricing; the cited page does not establish that this model is available for Splunk Enterprise Security.
Elastic Security Serverless
Elastic publishes usage rates for Security Serverless. The page lists ingestion as low as $0.09 per GB for one feature tier and $0.11 per GB for another. Retention is listed as low as $0.017 per GB per month and $0.019 per GB per month. Egress includes 50 GB free, then costs $0.05 per GB.
These are “as low as” rates, not a complete quote. The rates took effect November 1, 2025. Elastic says per-endpoint fees no longer apply as of March 23, 2026, while ingestion and retention charges continue. Billing is monthly for data ingested into the serverless project at the applicable feature-tier rate. Region, configuration, and the live estimator can change the result.
Best Value
Hidden fees to look for in a quote
- Overage: Determine whether excess data is prorated, billed at the commitment rate, discounted according to an order form, throttled, or requires an amendment.
- Storage: Ask when analytics retention ends and what archive or data-lake storage costs per GB per month.
- Processing: Data-lake-only tables may have separate transformation or processing meters.
- Query scans: A search can be billed by the volume of uncompressed data scanned, even when stored data is compressed.
- Compute: Advanced insights, notebooks, machine learning, dashboards, or workload capacity can consume separately metered resources.
- Egress and retrieval: Exporting, restoring, or rehydrating data for an investigation may incur network or retrieval fees.
- Automation and integrations: SOAR actions, connectors, serverless workflows, and third-party APIs can be billed outside the SIEM line item.
- Cloud infrastructure: Microsoft specifically warns that Azure Log Analytics, Logic Apps, Azure Machine Learning, and solutions used with Sentinel carry their own applicable charges.
- Support and services: Premium support, onboarding, consulting, custom content, and managed detection services may not be included in the platform price.
- Contract mechanics: Minimum terms, regional currency, renewal increases, workspace restrictions, and non-shareable commitments can affect the effective price.
Compare offers on an equivalent basis
| Comparison axis | Question to put in the request for proposal | Reason it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Primary meter | Is pricing based on GB, a daily commitment, assets, compute/search workload, or a package? | The billed driver differs between models. |
| Data scope and tier | Which sources and tables are included in analytics, and which belong in a data lake or archive? | Ingestion, processing, storage, and query meters may all differ. |
| Retention | How many days or months are included, and what is charged afterward? | Included retention can make two similar-looking packages materially different. |
| Search and compute | Are query scans, notebooks, detections, or compute capacity metered? | Search-heavy operations can dominate a workload-based bill. |
| Overage | What happens above the data cap or commitment? | The order form may specify a different rate or discount than the public page. |
| Features | Which detection, SOAR, intelligence, environment, pipeline, and support features are included? | Adding a missing capability later can exceed the original platform estimate. |
| Related services | Which cloud, connector, automation, transformation, or third-party charges are outside the quote? | The SIEM invoice may not be the full operating cost. |
| Geography and contract | Which region, currency, term, discount, and renewal rules apply? | Published rates do not resolve regional or negotiated totals. |
A practical worksheet for requesting comparable estimates
Send every vendor the same eight-part profile:
- Average and peak ingest volume by day, with the measurement period.
- Sources required for real-time detections versus investigation-only retention.
- Analytics/searchable retention and longer-term archive retention.
- Expected query frequency, scheduled searches, dashboards, and incident surges.
- Package, feature tier, number of environments, and monitored assets.
- Commitment, data-cap, overage, throttling, and renewal rules.
- Cloud infrastructure, automation, integration, support, and professional-service costs.
- Region, currency, contract term, discount assumptions, and taxes.
Request both a recurring monthly estimate and a sample bill for a high-volume month. Require the sample to show every variable meter. This exposes whether the “price” excludes retention, search, storage, or related cloud services.
What you can and cannot infer from public prices
Public figures are useful for understanding meter types, not for predicting a universal monthly bill. Microsoft publishes thresholds and billing examples; Google’s public packages require a sales quote; Splunk directs buyers to personalized estimates; Elastic publishes “as low as” usage rates. None of those figures incorporates your region, data mix, peak volume, retention schedule, query behavior, negotiated discount, or support scope.
No independent cross-vendor SIEM average price is established by the cited official sources. Treat vendor examples as examples, not market benchmarks. Recheck pricing pages and order-form language immediately before signing because rates, promotions, package terms, and regional availability change.

Bottom line for budgeting
Budget SIEM as a workload, not as a single per-gigabyte number. Measure representative ingestion, separate hot analytics from archive retention, quantify searches, list every connected service, and obtain itemized quotes using identical assumptions. The lowest headline ingestion rate is not necessarily the lowest total cost if retention, query scans, overage, compute, or cloud infrastructure are billed separately.
