One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo estimate what your gaming PC costs to run, multiply its average power draw in kilowatts by the hours it runs, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour (kWh). For example, a 450 W PC gaming for four hours uses 1.8 kWh; at 18.31¢/kWh, that is about 33¢ for the session. Your result depends on your PC’s actual draw, your utility rate, and whether you include a monitor or idle time.
Calculate the cost per hour and per month
Use these formulas:
- Energy (kWh) = average power (W) ÷ 1,000 × hours used
- Energy cost = energy (kWh) × electricity price per kWh
A kilowatt-hour is the energy a 1,000 W device uses in one hour. Clark Public Utilities explains the same relationship with the example of a 100 W device running for 10 hours. Clark Public Utilities’ consumption activity (2022) also recommends measuring actual usage with a watt meter.

For a monthly estimate, use the number of hours the PC runs during that month. If you use a 30-day approximation, state it: four gaming hours daily equals 120 gaming hours in 30 days. Multiply 120 by your average gaming draw in kilowatts and then by your electricity price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWorked example: 450 W, four hours a day
One calculator uses a 450 W PC, four gaming hours per day, and a stated U.S. residential average rate of 18.31¢/kWh. At those assumptions, the hourly energy cost is 0.45 kW × $0.1831 = about $0.082, or 8¢. Over a 30-day month, 0.45 kW × 120 hours × $0.1831/kWh is about $9.89. The calculator displays about $10.03 per month; the small difference reflects its monthly-hour convention or calculation assumptions. These are illustrative figures, not a forecast for your bill. PlugCosts’ gaming PC calculator identifies its rate as an average, not an individual utility tariff.

Find the PC’s real power draw
The wattage printed on a power supply (PSU) is its rated capacity, not a reading of how much the computer continuously consumes. Actual draw changes with the workload. Use an average measured or estimated system draw for the hours you are calculating, rather than the PSU’s rating. UK Energy Calc’s gaming PC calculator, marked updated August 2026, likewise advises using measured or estimated average system power.
Separate gaming, idle, and other use
If the computer remains on between gaming sessions, calculate those hours separately. For example, if you know the average gaming draw and idle draw, calculate the kWh for each period and add them before multiplying by your rate. Do not count every powered-on hour as gaming unless the PC actually averages the gaming draw throughout that time.

Measure a representative period
A plug-in watt meter can record actual energy use in kWh, reducing the need to guess at average draw. Clark Public Utilities recommends leaving a meter connected for several days for a more accurate usage result. Measure days that reflect your normal mix of gaming, idle time, and other computer use.
Choose what your estimate includes
Decide whether you are estimating the tower alone or the full setup. A monitor adds its own consumption; include it by measuring or estimating its draw and adding it to the PC’s draw. Apply the same scope to the hours you count: active gaming only, or all time the equipment is powered on. A historical Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study reported 1,394 kWh per year for a representative vintage-2014 gaming computer including one display, based on 4.4 gaming hours per day and modeled use in other modes. That 2016 estimate reflects its specific machine and U.S. usage assumptions, not a current estimate for a newly built PC. The LBNL study, “Taming the Energy Use of Gaming Computers”, details the estimate.

Use your own electricity price
For the best estimate, use the energy price per kWh on your electricity bill or applicable tariff. Calculator defaults and regional averages are reference points only: they can differ by geography and date, and should not be treated as a universal current rate. For example, the 18.31¢/kWh figure above is the U.S. average rate used by that calculator, while UK Energy Calc describes a unit rate for a specific 2026 tariff period. Those figures are not interchangeable.
The formula estimates the energy charge, not necessarily the exact change to your full bill. Tiered or time-of-use pricing, taxes, delivery charges, fixed charges, and other adjustments can affect the total. If your rate varies by time, calculate each usage period at its applicable price.

- AUTOMATICALLY ALARM: When your power supply test value is normal range, the Power Supply Tester would issue a buzzer alarm, Easy to Know.
- WITH LED DISPLAY: We have developed a portable computer power tester for the power supply market that can judge the quality of the power supply. It has LCD display intuitive and accurate display voltage (+/ 0.01V), automatic fault alarm, complete test interface, small and beautiful appearance, and more test functions. It is your best choice and helper to quickly detect PC power.
- EASY TO USE: This power tester only needs to be connected to the power supply ATX connector to easily and intuitively know whether the output of each power supply is normal. It can detect ATX, BTX, ITX, TFX computer power supply, and can display various voltage and PG values in LCD screen to quickly detect the performance of computer power supply.
- PRACTICAL & CONVENIENCE: Small and practical power tester. Now the number of power output groups is increasing. As long as one of them has problem, the hardware of the computer system may work abnormally or even burn out. To measure whether the output voltage output of the power supply is stable, the player usually uses a multimeter. But for the average user is still a little troublesome.
- NOTE: It can also measure the output wire P4/P6/P8/SATA/IDE, and the external DIE/SATA/P6/P8 is the light display, there is no LCD voltage. There is LCD voltage display only when connecting to the 24pin or 20pin.
What older gaming-PC figures can—and cannot—tell you
The LBNL paper also reports a measured 414 W gaming-mode result for a full-base system benchmark using Unigine Heaven. It is a result for that specific test system and workload, not a universal gaming-PC draw. Neither that benchmark nor the study’s annual estimate should substitute for measuring or estimating your own machine. An older Triumfant white paper gives 400–600 kWh per year for typical general-purpose PCs, not gaming PCs, and cites U.S. electricity prices from January 2008; those figures are not suitable for estimating a current gaming PC’s cost.
