Your result depends on the exact model, bottle price in your market, page coverage, and how often the printer performs maintenance. As a concrete U.S. example, an Epson EcoTank ET-2800 uses 522-series bottles. Epson rates replacement bottles at 4,500 black pages and 7,500 color pages. At Epson’s listed U.S. prices of $17.99 for a black bottle and $71.95 for a C/M/Y/K four-pack, the ink-only arithmetic works out to about 0.40 cents per rated black page and 0.72 cents per rated page for the three color bottles (CMY).
Those are bottle-price calculations, not a promise about your documents. They exclude paper, the printer, electricity and service, and real pages can use more or less ink than the standardized yield assumes.

What the ET-2800 numbers actually mean
The ET-2800 illustration is useful because it identifies the model, bottle code, market, price and yield instead of presenting a vague “fractions of a cent” claim. Epson’s U.S. specifications list these replacement-bottle yields:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Ink calculation | Price used | Rated yield | Ink-only result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 522 black bottle | $17.99 | 4,500 black pages | About $0.0040, or 0.40 cents per page |
| Three 522 color bottles (cyan, magenta and yellow) | $53.97 (three bottles at the four-pack’s implied $17.99 each) | 7,500 color pages | About $0.0072, or 0.72 cents per page |
| 522 C/M/Y/K four-pack | $71.95 | Separate black and color yields above | Not one single page rate; mixed pages consume black and color in different amounts |
The $53.97 color calculation isolates the CMY portion. Epson’s four-pack also contains black ink, so dividing $71.95 by 7,500 would incorrectly charge the black bottle to every color page. A document with black text and color graphics can consume all four inks, and its cost depends on the coverage of each color.

Epson’s yields use an ISO/IEC 24712 test pattern and Epson’s stated methodology. They are standardized comparison figures, not a guarantee that a particular household or office will get exactly 4,500 or 7,500 pages.
Ink cost is only one part of cost per sheet
“Cost to print” can mean two different things:
- Ink-only cost: the bottle price divided by the manufacturer’s rated replacement yield. This is the ET-2800 calculation above and is the cleanest way to compare consumables.
- Total ownership cost: ink plus paper, the printer’s purchase price, electricity, cleaning cycles, occasional replacement parts and any service. The ET-2800 figures do not include these items.
For a fair household budget, keep the categories separate. A printer bought for a high upfront price may still have low running costs, while a low purchase price can be offset by expensive consumables. Paper can also dominate the total for photo printing, card stock or specialty media even when ink costs less than one cent per rated document page.
How to calculate your own EcoTank cost per page
Use the exact bottle and yield information for your model and market. The following method follows Epson’s published cost-per-page approach: average bottle or cartridge selling price divided by the corresponding yield.
- Identify the exact printer model. “EcoTank” covers many generations and regional models. Record the model number from the front panel, label or printer settings.
- Record the replacement bottle codes. Do not assume that a bottle used by one EcoTank fits another. For the ET-2800 example, the code is 522.
- Use a current local price. Bottle prices vary by country, retailer and date. Write down whether the price is for one color, a black bottle, a multipack or a temporary promotion.
- Use the replacement-bottle yield. The first bottles supplied with a new printer may yield fewer pages because some ink is consumed during initial setup. Use the replacement yield for ongoing running-cost estimates.
- Match price to the ink being measured. Divide the black-bottle price by the black yield for a black estimate. Divide the combined cyan, magenta and yellow cost by the color yield for a CMY estimate. Do not mix a four-color pack price with a single-color yield unless you explain exactly what the calculation represents.
- State the result’s limits. Label it “ink-only,” name the test pattern and model, and add paper and other ownership costs separately if you need a full cost per sheet.
For example, the ET-2800 black calculation is $17.99 ÷ 4,500 = $0.003998, rounded to 0.40 cents. The CMY calculation is $53.97 ÷ 7,500 = $0.007196, rounded to 0.72 cents. Rounding to two decimal places in cents is appropriate for an illustration, but it should not be presented as a measurement of every page.

Why your actual yield can be higher or lower
Epson states that actual ink yields vary considerably with the images printed, print settings, temperature and humidity. Other practical factors matter too:
- Coverage: A page filled with dark photographs uses far more ink than a short text letter, even though both count as one page.
- Print quality: Draft, standard and high-quality modes place different amounts of ink on the paper.
- Color balance: A document that uses mostly cyan can empty that bottle while magenta and yellow remain. The average color yield does not predict that imbalance.
- Paper and media: Absorbent paper, borderless photos and specialty media can require heavier coverage or additional passes.
- Environment: Temperature and humidity affect ink behavior and the manufacturer’s stated yield conditions.
- Print frequency: Infrequent printing can trigger cleaning routines, which consume ink without producing a document.
- Maintenance: Epson says ink is used for printer maintenance, not only for marks on the page.
The manufacturer also notes that all ink colors are used for printing and printer maintenance, and all colors must be available for printing. A printer may therefore refuse a job when one color is empty even if the page appears to be mostly black.
Startup ink is not the same as replacement ink
When an EcoTank is first filled, some of the supplied ink goes into charging the print system and preparing the printhead. Epson consequently distinguishes the yield of the included ink from the yield of replacement bottles. If you divide the printer’s purchase price by the pages produced from the first fill, you are not measuring the recurring consumable cost.

A regional example: why the number cannot be exported
Epson India publishes a 33-paise total color cost-per-print example for listed L-series models in the Indian market. Its breakdown is 24 paise for cyan, magenta and yellow plus 9 paise for black, using stated yields of 7,500 composite color pages and 4,500 black pages and Epson’s Indian bottle maximum retail prices. Epson says those yields use ISO 24711/24712 patterns and its methodology.
That figure demonstrates a regional way to present a composite color estimate; it is not a U.S. price and does not apply automatically to an ET-2800 or another EcoTank model. Currency, bottle pricing, model, included ink and the definition of “color page” all have to match before two figures can be compared.
How to compare EcoTank models or cartridge printers fairly
Put competing printers on the same basis before choosing one. A useful comparison table should include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Market and currency: Compare U.S. prices with U.S. prices, or convert all figures using a stated date and method.
- Printer model and bottle code: Similar names do not guarantee compatible ink or equal yields.
- Replacement, not startup, yield: Initial setup consumption can make a new printer’s first-fill result look unusually low.
- Test standard: ISO/IEC 24712 or another stated pattern. A laboratory-style page yield is not interchangeable with an unstated marketing estimate.
- Print category: Black document, composite color document and photo printing have different coverage assumptions.
- Ink included in the rate: Check whether black is included in a color figure, and whether the calculation uses one bottle or a complete set.
- Excluded costs: Note whether paper, printer depreciation, maintenance and electricity are omitted.
Epson’s Europe calculator describes the same basic division of bottle or cartridge average selling price by yield and frames broader comparisons around the ISO/IEC 24712 test pattern. That makes the method reproducible, but it does not eliminate the real-world variation caused by your documents and settings.

What a monthly print estimate can and cannot tell you
Epson’s U.S. ET-2800 materials used an average volume of about 125 pages per month in a 2021 two-year ink estimate. That is a usage assumption for the estimate, not a recommended limit and not evidence that every owner prints that amount. Your monthly ink spending depends on how many of those pages are black, how much color they contain and whether maintenance cycles occur between jobs.
To build a personal monthly budget, track pages by type for several refill cycles. Record the bottle cost, the date each bottle is installed and the page count when it is replaced. After several cycles, divide total ink spending by total pages, keeping photo and document jobs separate if they differ substantially.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ways to keep the real cost close to the rated cost
- Use draft or standard quality for routine documents and reserve high quality for pages that need it.
- Print only the pages and graphics you need; large filled backgrounds can consume ink rapidly.
- Keep the printer in a moderate environment and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance instead of repeatedly initiating manual cleanings.
- Print often enough to avoid long idle periods, while avoiding unnecessary test pages.
- Buy the correct replacement bottle code and verify the model before opening it. A low price is not useful if the ink is incompatible.
- Keep all colors available, because the printer may require them for maintenance and normal operation.
- Include paper in your own spreadsheet when comparing an EcoTank with another printer, especially for photos and specialty media.
Diagnosing a cost that seems unexpectedly high
The bottle emptied quickly
Check whether the pages were photo-heavy, printed at high quality or produced with borderless settings. Review the page count and look for repeated head-cleaning cycles. A single bottle’s result is not enough to establish a long-term yield because one color may be used much more heavily than the others.
The printer will not print black-only pages
Confirm that every color tank has ink. Epson’s ET-2800 footnote says all colors are used for printing and maintenance and all colors must be available, so an empty color can block printing even when the requested document appears monochrome.

The first fill produced fewer pages
That is expected when setup ink is included in the count. Recalculate with the replacement-bottle yield for recurring costs.
The cents-per-page result does not match an online claim
Compare the model, country, bottle price date, replacement versus startup yield, test standard and whether the other figure includes black ink, paper or maintenance. A number without those qualifications is not an apples-to-apples comparison.
Bottom line for the ET-2800 example
Using Epson’s U.S. replacement figures, the ET-2800’s simple ink-only arithmetic is about 0.40 cents per rated black page and 0.72 cents for the CMY portion of a rated color page. Those low numbers explain why refillable-tank printers can be economical for sustained printing, but they are not your guaranteed household cost. Price changes, page coverage, print settings, environment, maintenance ink, paper and the printer’s purchase price all belong in a complete budget.
