A realistic ownership budget includes the printer, resin, tanks, build platforms, washing and curing equipment, cleaning supplies, failed prints, labor, electricity, taxes, shipping and—if uptime matters—a service plan. Current official starting prices range from $1,448 for a Form 3 to $16,249 for a Form 4BL, before regional checkout costs.
For a useful five-year estimate, identify your exact printer and resin, forecast liters consumed, assign replacement intervals to tanks and platforms, decide whether to buy service coverage, and add your workflow’s indirect costs. There is no single universal annual total.

The three cost layers of Formlabs ownership
Ownership expenses fall into three distinct layers. Separating them prevents the common mistake of treating the printer’s list price as the complete investment.

1. Upfront hardware
The printer is the largest one-time cost, but the required accessories and post-processing equipment may materially increase the amount paid at checkout. Official prices are starting prices; region, tax, shipping and bundles can change the final total.

These figures do not establish build volume, supported materials, throughput or regulatory suitability by themselves. Select a model by matching its approved material ecosystem and production capacity to your work, then compare the complete package rather than the printer alone.
2. Recurring materials and workflow equipment
Resin cartridges or containers, resin tanks and build platforms are operating costs. Tanks and platforms are not “free forever” parts: they gradually accumulate wear, clouding, scratches or contamination and should be budgeted as replacement consumables over the machine’s life.
You will also need a washing process and a curing process. Most materials should be post-cured to reach their highest strength and stability. For biocompatible materials, Formlabs states that post-curing is required to meet regulatory safety standards. Include the purchase price of wash and cure equipment, plus the alcohol or other cleaning consumables, before calculating the cost per part.
3. Maintenance, support and downtime
Routine care includes keeping the resin path clean, inspecting tanks and platforms, replacing worn consumables, handling spills and validating prints after a material change. A service plan exchanges a recurring fee for coverage and support that can reduce the financial impact of a breakdown or an inexperienced operator.
The listed one-year Form 4 Pro Service Plan is $599. The Form 4L plan is $1,699 for one year. Benefits listed for these plans include accessories coverage, replacement parts, express replacement, priority phone and email support, training and preventative maintenance. Production plans are priced for fleets rather than a single occasional user. A plan is most defensible when downtime costs more than the annual premium or when you need predictable response times.
How much resin costs per liter and per print
There is no universal Formlabs resin price. Formulation, region, purchasing quantity and product line all change the price, so calculate with the actual resin family and price you expect to buy. Do not apply a dental material’s published example to every standard, engineering or specialty resin.
Use a per-liter calculation

Price per liter = resin package price ÷ liters in the package.
Then estimate the resin consumed by a part, including supports and any material lost during setup or cleanup:
Resin cost per part = printed liters × price per liter.
If your slicer reports mass instead of volume, use the material’s documented density to convert grams to milliliters. Keep each resin family in its own calculation; a rigid engineering resin and a flexible resin are not interchangeable cost assumptions.
Add waste and failed prints
A nominal slicer volume is not the same as your purchasing requirement. Supports, purge material, residue left in a tank, expired material and failed jobs all consume resin. Track purchased volume and successful parts for several months, then divide total resin purchased by the number of accepted parts. This gives a workflow-specific cost that includes your actual failure rate.
Put the published dental example in context
A Formlabs Dental total-cost white paper uses $37 per liter, or $28 per liter with a bulk discount, in a specific dental-lab package. It also presents a $15,528 five-year example total. Those numbers are not a universal Form 3 or Form 4 ownership price: they combine a particular printer, post-processing equipment, service assumptions, resin and other consumables over a stated period. Use the package as a budgeting template, not as a quote for your shop.
Supplies and equipment beyond the printer
A complete setup normally includes the following categories. The exact quantities depend on volume, resin type and whether you run one machine or a fleet.

- Resin: cartridges or containers approved for your printer and material profile.
- Resin tanks: replacement tanks should be treated as consumables, especially when optical surfaces become cloudy or damaged.
- Build platforms: keep a spare if production cannot stop while a platform is cleaned or replaced.
- Wash equipment: washing removes uncured resin before curing; budget cleaning fluid, containers and disposal.
- Cure equipment: most materials need a controlled post-cure; biocompatible workflows require it for regulatory compliance.
- Personal protective equipment: nitrile gloves, eye protection and protective clothing reduce skin-contact risk during handling.
- Cleaning and waste supplies: paper towels, absorbent materials, sealed waste containers and the disposal method required in your jurisdiction.
- Workspace items: ventilation appropriate to your material safety documentation, a stable bench, storage and spill-control materials.
Electricity is usually a smaller line than resin or labor, but it is still part of a defensible estimate. Record the printer, wash station and cure station’s operating hours and apply your local electricity rate rather than borrowing a generic annual figure.

Maintenance costs and Form 3 support horizon
Consumable replacement is normal maintenance
Plan for tank and platform replacement instead of waiting for a failure to interrupt a deadline. Your replacement interval depends on resin chemistry, print volume, cleaning technique and how often parts are removed. Keep a log with installation date, material family, print hours or liters processed, visible damage and the reason for replacement. That history is more useful than a generic calendar estimate.
Resin storage and shelf life
Most Formlabs resins have a 24-month shelf life. Store cartridges according to the material’s instructions and rotate inventory so older stock is used first. A cartridge that reaches its shelf-life limit is a potential write-off, so buying in bulk only saves money when your forecasted volume will consume it in time.
How long Form 3 consumables remain available
Formlabs says it wants customers to be able to print with Form 3 generation printers until at least January 2028. The statement specifically covers continued availability of Form 3 generation cartridges, tanks, platforms and materials, subject to availability and demand. If you are buying a used or discounted Form 3-series machine, include the possibility of later sourcing constraints in your risk assessment rather than assuming indefinite availability.
Is a service plan worth the price?
For a Form 4, one year of the listed Pro Service Plan adds $599. Five consecutive years at that unchanged annual price would total $2,995, although plan pricing and eligibility can change. For a Form 4L, five years at the listed $1,699 annual price would be $8,495. These are arithmetic illustrations, not a promise that future renewal prices will remain unchanged.

A plan is easier to justify when a failed printer would stop paid production, delay clinical work, or require a technician your organization cannot provide. Express replacement, priority support and preventative maintenance have value beyond the parts themselves because they shorten diagnosis and recovery.
Self-maintain when your workflow is flexible
Self-maintenance may cost less for low-volume users who can tolerate a failed job or a delayed part. Set aside a repair reserve anyway: replacement tanks, platforms, accessories, shipping and unplanned labor can arrive in the same month. Compare that reserve with the plan premium using your actual downtime cost, not the printer’s purchase price.

Building a five-year Form 4 budget
Make the estimate transparent by listing every assumption. A spreadsheet with one row per cost category is preferable to a single “annual ownership” guess.
- Record the hardware subtotal. Start with the current official Form 4 price of $2,625, then add any required wash, cure or accessory purchases. Enter tax and shipping for your location separately.
- Forecast successful production. Estimate parts or print hours per month, then apply a realistic failed-print rate based on your process. If you have no history, label the assumption and update it after the first quarter.
- Convert resin use to liters. Multiply slicer volume by the number of jobs, add support and waste allowance, and price the actual resin family. Keep standard and specialty materials separate.
- Schedule tanks and platforms. Use your replacement log or a conservative interval, multiply replacements by the current price, and include one spare when a production interruption would be costly.
- Add post-processing. Include wash and cure equipment, cleaning fluid, gloves, containers and waste handling. Spread one-time equipment over the five-year period only if it is expected to remain usable for that period.
- Decide on service coverage. Add $599 for each year of a Form 4 Pro Plan you actually intend to purchase. If you self-maintain, create a separate downtime and repair reserve instead.
- Include labor and utilities. Measure operator minutes for setup, washing, curing, support removal and cleanup. Multiply by the loaded hourly labor rate and add electricity from your local tariff.
- Divide by the useful output. Calculate both total five-year cost and cost per accepted part: total ownership cost ÷ accepted parts. Also calculate cost per print hour when parts vary dramatically in size.
The resulting total is only as reliable as its assumptions. Recalculate when resin prices, production volume, tax, service-plan terms or replacement rates change.
Comparing models by total cost, not list price
Price alone can push you toward a machine that is too small, too slow for your queue or incompatible with the material you need. Compare each candidate on these axes:
| Decision factor | Question to answer | Why it changes ownership cost |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront price | What is the current regional checkout total? | Determines capital outlay, tax and financing needs. |
| Build capacity | Can one job fit, or will it require multiple batches? | More batches increase setup, washing and operator time. |
| Material compatibility | Does the printer support the approved resin required for your parts? | Using an unsuitable material can waste jobs and invalidate a workflow. |
| Throughput | How many accepted parts or print hours are needed each week? | Insufficient throughput may force a second printer sooner. |
| Post-processing | What washing and curing steps are mandatory? | Equipment, labor and utilities rise with process complexity. |
| Consumable schedule | How often will tanks and platforms be replaced? | Frequent replacement can outweigh a lower purchase price. |
| Service coverage | What support level and response time does the plan provide? | Coverage trades a known premium for lower downtime risk. |
| Expected volume | How many successful parts will the machine produce? | Fixed costs fall per part as useful output rises, until capacity is exceeded. |
Form 4 and Form 4L are current products, while the Form 3 generation remains supported for consumables on the stated timeline. A lower-priced Form 3 may be sensible for light work, but a buyer who needs long-term high volume should model both capacity and the January 2028 support horizon.
Common budgeting mistakes and fixes
Using the printer price as the total
Problem: The quote omits wash, cure, tanks, platforms, resin and tax.
Fix: Build a checkout list and a five-year operating sheet before approving the purchase.

- Tax, shipping and import charges
- Wash equipment and replacement cleaning fluid
- Cure equipment and any required accessories
- Resin by family, liters purchased and waste rate

At the end of each quarter, replace estimates with your invoices and production log. This turns a speculative five-year forecast into a rolling cost-per-part figure that reflects the way you actually use the printer.
Bottom line
A Formlabs printer can cost from $1,448 to $16,249 before regional checkout charges, but the meaningful ownership number is the total cost of producing accepted parts. Resin volume and formulation, tank and platform replacement, washing and curing, service coverage, failed jobs, labor, utilities and waste handling determine that total. The most defensible five-year Form 4 estimate is therefore a documented model built from your printer, resin, production volume and support choices—not a universal number copied from another workflow.
