PCWorld reported a complete DIY build at $887.52 on June 26, 2026, using a Ryzen 5 7600X, Radeon RX 7600, 16GB of DDR5 memory and a 512GB NVMe SSD, plus the motherboard, case, power supply and other parts required for a working desktop. In the same period, the 512GB Steam Machine was reported at $1,049 and the 2TB model at $1,349.
The $161.48 difference between $887.52 and $1,049 is only arithmetic applied to two dated prices. A conventional desktop tower is not a like-for-like copy of Valve’s compact, custom-tuned system, so the meaningful comparison also includes resolution targets, power, size, storage, upgradeability and what accessories or software are included.

What the dated prices actually tell you
| Option | Reported price | Date and configuration | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY desktop reference | $887.52 | PCWorld, June 26, 2026 | A complete tower assembled from parts sourced from Amazon and Newegg; a coupon was used on at least one item. |
| Steam Machine, 512GB | $1,049 | Reported by TechSpot in 2026 | Valve’s compact system with 512GB NVMe storage. |
| Steam Machine, 2TB | $1,349 | Reported by TechSpot in 2026 | The higher-capacity configuration. |
PCWorld explicitly cautioned that its parts prices were the prices available when the article was published and could change at any time. No live October 2026 retailer price is provided, so use $887.52 as a dated benchmark, not as a checkout total. Taxes, delivery charges, peripherals, a display and any operating-system licensing are not separately identified in the cited comparison; confirm those items before setting your own budget.
The source article’s four headline component prices do not add up to $887.52 because the total also includes the motherboard, case, power supply and other build hardware. The full-build number is the correct reference point.

What “Steam Machine-level performance” means
There is no retail graphics card that exactly duplicates the Steam Machine’s semi-custom design. Tom’s Hardware lists a six-core, 12-thread AMD Zen 4 processor running at up to 4.8GHz with a 30W TDP, paired with semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics containing 28 compute units, up to 2.45GHz sustained clock speed, a 110W GPU power envelope and 8GB of GDDR6 memory. The system has 16GB of DDR5-5600 memory, NVMe storage and a 300W internal power supply.
| Steam Machine specification | Reported value | Why it matters for a DIY comparison |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 6 cores / 12 threads, up to 4.8GHz, 30W TDP | A Ryzen 5 7600X matches the generation and core count, but it is a normal desktop chip with a higher default power target. |
| GPU | 28 RDNA 3 compute units, up to 2.45GHz sustained, 110W TDP, 8GB GDDR6 | A desktop Radeon RX 7600 is a practical performance reference, not an electrical or clock-for-clock clone. |
| Memory | 16GB DDR5-5600 | The capacity is comparable to the 2×8GB kit in the PCWorld example, while the desktop kit is rated at DDR5-6000. |
| Storage | NVMe; 512GB or 2TB configurations reported | Match capacity when comparing prices. A 2TB Steam Machine should not be compared with a 512GB desktop without calling out the difference. |
| Enclosure and power | Approximately 152 × 156 × 162.4mm; 300W internal PSU | The compact enclosure and low-power custom board are major differences from a standard, upgradeable tower. |
In testing cited by Tom’s Hardware, the Steam Machine landed between desktop Radeon RX 6600 and RX 7600 cards in synthetic tests and selected Cyberpunk raster workloads. That result makes the RX 7600 a defensible center point for a build brief, while still leaving room for game-by-game variation.
Why the RX 7600 build is a reference, not a clone
The XFX Radeon RX 7600 in the PCWorld list is a full-size retail card with its own cooler, clocks and power behavior. Valve’s GPU is integrated into a small system and constrained to a 110W envelope. Cooling, firmware, driver tuning and sustained clocks therefore differ even when the broad performance tier overlaps.

- Boost Clock: Up to 2655 MHz
The Ryzen 5 7600X is similarly useful as a desktop reference because it has six Zen 4 cores and 12 threads, but its normal desktop power behavior is unlike the Steam Machine’s 30W custom CPU. A DIY tower may deliver higher peak performance while drawing more power and occupying more space.
The published $887.52 parts example
| Part | PCWorld’s reported price | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen 5 7600X | $147 | Six-core Zen 4 desktop processor; higher-power than Valve’s custom CPU. |
| XFX Radeon RX 7600 | $280 | Practical desktop graphics reference for the custom 28-CU GPU tier. |
| 16GB (2×8GB) DDR5-6000 | $180 with a coupon | PCWorld noted that memory pricing was unusually high in its market snapshot. |
| ADATA Legend 710 512GB PCIe 3.0 NVMe SSD | $70 | Matches the base storage capacity; PCWorld described this budget drive choice as a weak point. |
| Motherboard, case, PSU and other required parts | Included in the $887.52 total | These components explain why the four visible line items do not equal the complete-build price. |
For a current purchase, re-price every line, not just the CPU and GPU. Memory may no longer carry the same premium, while a different SSD, motherboard or case can move the total in either direction. Keep the full tower total separate from the cost of a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, game licenses or other accessories.
How to plan a comparable build
- Set the performance target. Use 1080p or 1440p as the primary gaming goal, and treat 4K as a title-dependent output mode that may require upscaling or reduced settings.
- Choose the graphics tier first. The RX 7600 is the documented desktop reference. Check the specific card’s length, slot thickness, auxiliary power connector and cooler clearance before choosing a case.
- Pair it with a six-core Zen 4 desktop CPU. The Ryzen 5 7600X matches the reference build, but select a motherboard and cooler that support its socket and power requirements.
- Install dual-channel memory. The example uses 16GB as two 8GB modules at DDR5-6000. Verify the motherboard’s memory support and enable its rated profile in firmware after assembly.
- Match storage capacity deliberately. A 512GB SSD mirrors the base configuration but leaves less room for large games. A 2TB drive makes the capacity comparison closer to the larger Steam Machine, although it changes the budget.
- Budget the supporting hardware. Include the motherboard, CPU cooler if one is not bundled, case, power supply, system fans and every cable or adapter required for the build. Do not total only the processor, graphics card, memory and SSD.
- Check power and physical fit. A retail RX 7600 and Ryzen 5 7600X do not share the Steam Machine’s 300W compact design target. Use the graphics card maker’s power guidance, leave airflow around the cooler and confirm that the PSU has the required connectors.
- Recheck the date before buying. Record each retailer price, coupon condition, shipping charge and stock status on the day you order. The historical $887.52 total cannot guarantee today’s availability.
Resolution and frame-rate expectations
Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais described 1440p as “definitely a little bit of a sweet spot” in an IGN interview, as reported by TechSpot. That is a useful orientation, not a universal benchmark promise. The practical target for this class of hardware is smooth 1080p or 1440p gaming with settings adjusted per title.

Native 4K at 60 frames per second should not be assumed. Tom’s Hardware reported demanding games that fell short of 60fps at 4K with heavy settings; lowering settings and enabling an upscaler improved playability. Valve’s 4K messaging relies on AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and game-specific choices. The same approach can help a DIY RX 7600 system, but image quality and frame rate depend on the game, preset, driver and upscaling mode.

Because the cited tests place the Steam Machine between RX 6600 and RX 7600 results, expect some games to favor the desktop card and others to narrow the gap. A single Cyberpunk result or synthetic score cannot establish identical performance across an entire library.
DIY tower versus Steam Machine: the trade-offs
| Decision factor | DIY reference tower | Steam Machine |
|---|---|---|
| Reported price | $887.52 in PCWorld’s June 26, 2026 example; not a current quote | $1,049 for 512GB or $1,349 for 2TB, as reported by TechSpot in 2026 |
| Graphics relationship | Retail RX 7600 used as an approximate reference | Custom 28-CU RDNA 3 GPU; testing placed it between RX 6600 and RX 7600 in cited workloads |
| Resolution target | 1080p/1440p practical; 4K depends on FSR and settings | Same general caveat; 1440p is the more grounded target |
| Size | Depends on the selected case; normally larger than the compact unit | Approximately 152 × 156 × 162.4mm |
| Power design | Standard desktop PSU sized for the chosen parts | 300W internal PSU and a 110W GPU envelope |
| Upgrade path | Standard desktop parts can generally be replaced individually, subject to motherboard, case and PSU limits | Custom compact hardware makes component-level replacement more constrained |
| Accessories and software | Not separately itemized in PCWorld’s total | Controller, peripherals and software inclusions are not stated in the cited price reports |
When the extra money can be worthwhile
Choose the DIY route when flexibility matters
A tower lets you select a quieter cooler, add storage later, replace the graphics card and reuse standard components. It is also easier to troubleshoot one failed part. Those benefits come with assembly time, compatibility checks and a larger footprint.

Choose the compact system when simplicity and size matter
The Steam Machine packages custom hardware, cooling and power delivery in a small enclosure. The premium over the dated DIY total can represent engineering, compactness and a ready-to-use appliance rather than extra frame rate. Verify the final regional price and included accessories before treating that premium as a direct performance charge.
Spend more on storage only when you need it
The 512GB configurations are the fairest capacity match. Moving to 2TB reduces the need to uninstall games but raises the reported Steam Machine price to $1,349; a DIY build can add a larger NVMe drive at purchase or later, provided the motherboard has the required slot and capacity support.

- Using the $887.52 figure as a live quote: it reflects June 2026 listings and a coupon, not October pricing.
- Comparing unlike storage tiers: put the 512GB desktop beside the 512GB machine, or explicitly price a 2TB desktop against the 2TB model.
- Ignoring the rest of the tower: motherboard, case and PSU are part of a functioning PC and are already embedded in PCWorld’s full-build total.
- Calling the RX 7600 an exact equivalent: the Steam Machine GPU is custom, lower-power and integrated.
- Promising universal 4K/60: frame rate changes with the game, settings, upscaler and software version.
- Forgetting the non-tower budget: the cited reports do not establish separate costs for a display, input devices, games, operating-system licensing or a controller.
How to make the comparison fair
Write down the date and region for every price, use the same storage capacity, include all tower components, and state whether peripherals or a controller are included. Then compare the games you actually play at the resolution and settings you intend to use. This prevents a low desktop headline price from hiding missing parts and prevents a compact system’s premium from being mistaken for a guaranteed frame-rate advantage.
Valve has also said that its original pricing goal was no longer viable and that the published prices reflected manufacturing conditions and component costs secured over the preceding six months, as reported by TechSpot. That statement helps explain why a later retailer check can diverge from both the $1,049 machine price and the $887.52 historical build.
