Price the actual architecture, settings, region and monthly runtime—not a generic “cloud hosting” figure.
First define what “cloud hosting” includes
A cloud encoder that runs continuously and sends one live feed to YouTube is not the same service as a full media pipeline that encodes, packages and delivers video to viewers. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, so a YouTube stream-to-ingest setup does not automatically need a separate viewer-facing distribution layer. Whether a particular design needs packaging or additional delivery services depends on its architecture.
A useful estimate should say explicitly whether it covers only the stream-to-YouTube encoder or also packaging, origination and viewer distribution. Without that distinction, a monthly figure is not comparable or dependable.
What the published AWS example does—and does not—show
Amazon Web Services estimates $69.74 for a one-hour SD 540p live event with approximately 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia): $2.50 for live encoding and packaging, plus $67.24 for distribution. Distribution accounts for most of that example’s total. This is an architecture- and audience-specific event estimate, not a quote for a continuous YouTube podcast stream, and it should not be multiplied by 24 hours to produce one. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS cost example documents its assumptions.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS says eligible reserved pricing with a 12-month commitment can save up to 75% against on-demand pricing. That is a potential saving, not a universal discount: eligibility and actual savings depend on matching the commitment to the resources and usage. Check the AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing page and calculate for the required region and configuration.
Build a realistic monthly estimate
- Choose the architecture. Decide whether the requirement is a single feed to YouTube or a pipeline that also packages and distributes video to viewers. Include services only if the design uses them.
- Set the stream profile. Record resolution, bitrate, frame rate, codec, and the number of inputs and outputs. These affect live encoding costs.
- Count every running hour. For an always-on stream, estimate the full scheduled runtime for the month. AWS says MediaLive charges for running inputs, outputs and add-ons; charges continue while a channel is running even if it is not receiving input or producing output.
- Choose resilience deliberately. Redundant processing can increase the bill. AWS describes standard channels as using two processing pipelines in different availability zones, so include redundancy only when it is part of the chosen configuration.
- Set region and payment terms. Regional rates vary, and pay-as-you-go versus commitment pricing can change the estimate. The published AWS event example uses US East (N. Virginia), not every AWS region.
- Separate encoder cost from delivery cost. If viewers are served by a content delivery service, estimate that separately using the expected audience and viewing traffic. The AWS example shows why: distribution is its largest charge.
Use a vendor calculator or current rate card for the selected services, region and resource specifications. Report the assumptions alongside the total, including runtime and whether viewer delivery is included.

DIY cloud infrastructure or a managed continuous stream?
Operating cloud infrastructure gives you control over the encoder and its configuration, but you are responsible for selecting resources, monitoring runtime and understanding the associated charges. A managed service may reduce infrastructure work, but the available sources do not establish a current apples-to-apples price comparison for specific providers.
YouTube’s verified encoder directory includes AWS Elemental MediaLive and identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. YouTube notes that listed encoder products are not made by YouTube. The directory confirms service categories, not which one is cheapest for a podcast, current plan prices or affiliate availability.

YouTube settings that affect the setup, not the cloud price
YouTube’s encoder guidance says to give the encoder YouTube’s live server URL and stream key. Its settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingest settings; they do not provide a price for the cloud server or managed encoder. Keep the stream key private and use the current settings shown in YouTube Studio for the channel and stream.
Before streaming a podcast, confirm that you have the rights needed for the audio, video and any other material in the recording. A continuous stream does not change YouTube’s copyright rules. Pricing sources do not determine whether a particular podcast is eligible for monetization or complies with YouTube policies.

Common budgeting mistakes
- Turning an event quote into a monthly bill: the AWS $69.74 figure covers one hour under stated event assumptions, not a 24/7 YouTube channel.
- Counting only the encoder: a system with packaging or viewer-facing distribution has additional cost categories; estimate them only when the architecture actually includes them.
- Ignoring idle runtime: a running MediaLive channel can accrue charges even when no input arrives or output is produced.
- Assuming all regions and profiles cost alike: region, resolution, bitrate, frame rate and input/output configuration matter.
- Assuming redundancy is free: additional processing pipelines add resources and may add cost.
- Using an old rate example as a current quote: historical AWS blog pricing should not be treated as a current budget. Use current regional pricing or a calculator instead.
